We start the month thinking of the saints that have died and then on All Souls Day we remember those that have died. Although this seems grim, thinking about death helps us remember to pray for the dead. We have the key to help them get into heaven by praying for their souls. They need us to pray for them. It is hard to think about those who have died before us; those we miss so desperately sometimes. But what keeps them close to us is the need for us to stay close to them each day as we pray for them. Heavenly Father, in union with the merits of Jesus and Mary, I offer to You for the sake of the poor souls all the satisfactory value of my works during life, as well as all that will be done for me after death. I give You my all through the hands of the Immaculate Virgin Mary that she may set free whatever souls she pleases, according to her heavenly wisdom and mother’s love for them. Receive this offering, O God, and grant me in return an increase of Your grace. Amen. The Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner at St. Margaret-St. John is this Sunday, Nov. 10. Please note the correct time is from 3-7 PM in the SM-SJ cafeteria. The crowd is fun, the food is great and we get to come together as a region to support one of our parishes. This separation starts in our thoughts and settles into our hearts and behavior. Hate grows, and if it isn’t controlled and redeemed, it can pull us down. We don’t have to hate, be angry, or carry grudges if we don’t want to. Our hearts and minds can be filled with God’s grace. During a Yellow Fever epidemic when many of the city’s political leaders fled the city for healthier rural climates, Saint Pierre cared for the sick and the dying. He was a successful entrepreneur, who did not hesitate to share the fruits of his labor with others. In recognition of the Saint’s virtuous life, the late Cardinal Cooke introduced Pierre’s cause for canonization in 1968.

    Venerable Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853) by Sister Elizabeth Ann, S.J.W. Pierre was born into slavery on the island of Haiti. His master, Jean Berard, encouraged the young Pierre to learn to read and write. Pierre was a house slave, so he escaped the brutality and harsh work of the fields. Pierre's mother and grandmother were devout Catholics who passed their faith on to Pierre and his younger sister, Rosalie. Jean Berard seemed to realize that there might be troubled times on Haiti. In 1787, he moved his new wife and several slaves, including Pierre and Rosalie, to New York City. It was in New York City that Pierre learned to become a hairdresser. In those days, wealthy women had their hair decorated in elaborate fashions, and a good hairdresser could make a nice sum of money. Not only did Pierre have a natural gift for dressing hair, he possessed a "quiet wit and gaiety"1. Pierre was also discreet, and these qualities endeared him to his clients who often sought him out for advice. These same clients supported Pierre in his charitable works. As Pierre was establishing a good reputation among New York's elite, the increasing number of Haitian refugees brought reports of murder and devastation from the island. Jean Berard returned to Haiti to try to protect his property, but died of pleurisy shortly after his return. The widowed Madame Berard, grieving over her husband's death, was also confronted with the news of her new poverty; the revolution on Haiti had destroyed her livelihood.

    BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY 2018 AN UPDATED EXCERPT FROM JANUARY 31, 2012 TIMELY TOPICS Each year in February we are reminded of the history and contributions of Black Americans. For us, it also is a time to be aware of the history and gifts of our black brothers and sisters in the Catholic Church in America. Black Catholics are not newcomers to the Church. We often forget that Christianity did not originate in Europe. You may be surprised to learn that Black Catholic History began in the Acts of the Apostles (8:26-40) with the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip the Deacon. Three Popes have been born in Africa: Saints Victor I, Melchiades, and Gelasius I. Many saints were black: Saints Cyprian, Zeno, Anthony of Egypt, Moses the Black, Pachomius, Maurice, Athanasius, Pisentius, Mary of Egypt, Cyril of Alexandria, Monica of Hippo, Augustine of Hippo, Perpetua, Felicitas, and St. Martin DePorres. Black Catholics have played a major part in the history and development of our Church, e.g., St. Augustine’s Summa Theologica (St. Augustine is considered the first black doctor of the Church). Many Black Catholics have devoted their lives to their Catholic faith – indeed, many have given their lives for their faith. Below are links to some notable Black Catholics.
