Three days of celebration and ceremony began with James P. Smith, executive director of AIHA, and Andrei Crusinschi, councilor to the Minister of Health of Moldova, cutting the ribbon at the Vorniceni Regional Reference Laboratory on the morning of March 24, World Stop TB Day. Numerous celebrants representing USAID, local government, and TB and primary healthcare services were greeted with traditional bread, salt, and wine as they entered the facility. Viorel Soltan— director of AIHA's USAID-funded Strengthening Tuberculosis Control in Moldova Project, which supports WHO's recommended Directly Observed Treatment-Short Course (DOTS) strategy for TB control—lauded the commitment the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, AIHA Executive Director James P. -

Progress Report Policy Matrix for implementation under the Grant Agreement No. ENPI/2008/019-655 between the Government of Moldova and the European Commission for the 1 January 2010 – 31 December 2010 period. Part 1: Health policy and strategy Activities to be Responsible actors The recorded progress implemented in 2010 1. a Ministry of Health In the process of being implemented Update of the human There is a continuous process of strengthening the human resources in health sector in resource development plan RM. A number of 62 persons, including 14 public servants debutants, have been trained during the reporting period. The share of trained persons constitutes 85.0% from the total number of employees. 14 public servants debutants have attended 47 trainings during the January 2010 - 31 December 2010 period. By the Ministry of Health Orders No.07-p§ 3 of January 21, 2010 and No.107- p§1 of July 29 2010, the professional development plans of the public servants of the Ministry of Health were approved. Likewise, eleven civil servants were trained with the support of DFID Project "Support for Moldova’s National Development Strategy” in the following areas: public management, managerial skills, public policy, policy evaluation, financial management and project cycle management. By the MOH order No. P 33 - § 2 dated March 13, 2010 jointly with Transparency International Moldova, four training sessions were scheduled: “Handling conflict of interest in public service, promoting ethical principles and norms/standards - ways to prevent corruption, domestic and international legal framework against corruption, the petitioning system. By 31 December, the first two training courses were completed, being attended by 33 employees, including 8 public servants debutants. -

THE SOCIALIST SACRED: ATHEISM, RELIGION, AND MASS CULTURE IN ROMANIA, 1948-1989 BY ZSUZSÁNNA MAGDÓ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair and Director of Research Professor Keith Hitchins Professor Mark Steinberg Associate Professor Zsuzsa Gille ii ABSTRACT Drawing on new archival sources, official publications, and oral histories, I challenge the self-portrayal of socialist civilizations as scientific, secular, and the “other” of everything religious. Between 1948 and 1989, the Romanian communist regime sought to disenchant believers with a scientific, materialist worldview. Yet, it likewise strove to imbue citizens’ lives with socialist sacred meaning. My work demonstrates that we cannot understand late socialism’s contradictory drive for rationalization and re-enchantment without examining how elites produced knowledge about atheism and lived religion. This dissertation analyzes elite interactions with believers and the Central Committee from 1948, when transforming religiosity emerged as a party priority, to the end of the socialist era. My chapters focus on science popularizers, preservationists, sociologists, and folklorists in institutions of cultural administration and research newly created to manage socialist beliefs and behavior. These elites shaped the place of religion and atheism in Romanian society while competing for resources within the centralized structure of the Party-State. Their voices mattered because they engaged believers for whom national and religious belonging coincided. Elites also provided specialized knowledge for party organs committed to achieve convergence between ideology and citizens’ subjectivity. -

It is the final step to complete my studies of the Master in Human Geography at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. I chose the subject of geopolitical changes and their effect on national identities as it matches my future aspiration, to someday work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. During my internship at the Netherlands Embassy in Romania, where I conducted part of the fieldwork for this thesis, I already made to first steps towards this goal. This thesis continues where my Bachelor thesis stopped, and compares my findings in Estonia to those of another former communist country in Eastern Europe, namely Romania. The last years have been a journey full of inspiration, intensive studying and above all gaining valuable knowledge on the subject. I’m looking forward to continue this journey further after my Masters. First of all I would like to thank my family for their continuous support and patience. -

Article 11: Social security and employment Article 12: Access to health services Article 15: Property rights Introduction HelpAge International, the Gender-Centre of Moldova and the HelpAge network of eight NGOs in Moldova (“Second Breath”/Balti, “Demnitate”/Orhei, “Association of Pensioners and Veterans” /Ialoveni, “Inspiration”/Comrat, “Avante”/Leova, “Pro- Democratie”/Cimislia, “Carabetovca”/ Basarabeasca, and “Artizana”/Cahul) are submitting evidence to highlight the experience of older women’s enjoyment of rights in Moldova. The combined fourth and fifth Periodic Report of the Republic of Moldova (CEDAW/C/MDA/4- 5) fails to sufficiently address the discrimination faced by older women or their rights in relation to implementation of the articles of the Convention. Data disaggregated by age is only available for women of reproductive age and this makes it impossible to monitor any discrimination or indeed progress in implementation of the Convention in relation to violence against older women and their access to social protection and healthcare as well as employment after retirement. In its List of Issues (CEDAW/C/MDA/Q/4-5) the CEDAW Committee requested information on all forms of violence against women, information on actions taken to raise awareness on the Convention among disadvantaged groups such as older women in particular and gender stereotypes in the society.
