Maj it prosper throughout the world, saje in the keeping of all those who have felt its noble impulse in this great Festival of Sport." i i LORD BURGHLEY, Chairman of the Organising Committee, for the scoreboard at the Closing Ceremony, August 14, 1948. Printed by McCorquodale & Co. Ltd., St. Thomas Street, London, S.E.i Source : Bibliothèque du CIO / IOC Library INTRODUCTION By the General Editor, The Kight Hon. The Lord Burghley, K.C.M.G. N the production and presentation of this Official Report, the Organising Committee has endeavoured to satisfy two primary objects : that the matter shall be, as far as I possible, accurate, and that it shall serve not only as a record of the work leading up to the staging of the London Games of 1948, and of the competitions themselves, but also that it may be of assistance to future Organising Committees in their work. The arrangement of the matter has been dictated, apart from the Results sections and those articles dealing with the celebration of the actual Games themselves, by the arrange ment of the work of the departments of the Organising Committee which it was found necessary to create.

Football in France Global Sport Cultures Eds Gary Armstrong, Brunel University, Richard Giulianotti, University of Aberdeen, and David Andrews, The University of Maryland From the Olympics and the World Cup to extreme sports and kabaddi, the social significance of sport at both global and local levels has become increasingly clear in recent years. The contested nature of identity is widely addressed in the social sciences, but sport as a particularly revealing site of such contestation, in both industrialising and post-industrial nations, has been less fruitfully explored. Further, sport and sporting corporations are increasingly powerful players in the world economy. Sport is now central to the social and technological development of mass media, notably in telecommunications and digital television. It is also a crucial medium through which specific populations and political elites communicate and interact with each other on a global stage. Berg publishers are pleased to announce a new book series that will examine and evaluate the role of sport in the contemporary world. Truly global in scope, the series seeks to adopt a grounded, constructively critical stance towards prior work within sport studies and to answer such questions as: • How are sports experienced and practised at the everyday level within local settings? • How do specific cultures construct and negotiate forms of social stratification (such as gender, class, ethnicity) within sporting contexts? • What is the impact of mediation and corporate globalisation upon local sports cultures? Determinedly interdisciplinary, the series will nevertheless privilege anthropological, historical and sociological approaches, but will consider submissions from cultural studies, economics, geography, human kinetics, international relations, law, philosophy and political science.

  • Aldershot Branch Is Closing on Friday 12 February 2020 Reasons for Closure, and Alternative Ways to Bank
This branch is closing – but we're still here to help Our Aldershot branch is closing on Friday 12 February 2020 Reasons for closure, and alternative ways to bank. This branch is closing – but your bank is always open This first booklet will help you understand why we’ve made the decision to close this branch. It also sets out the banking services and support that will be available to you after this branch has closed. In a second booklet, which will be available from the branch prior to it closing or online at home.barclays/ukbranchclosures, we'll share concerns and feedback from the local community. We'll also detail how we are helping people transition from using the branch with alternative ways to carry out their banking requirements. Here are the main reasons why the Aldershot is closing: • The number of counter transactions has gone down in the previous 24 months, and additionally 88% of our branch customers also use other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone • Customers using other ways to do their banking has increased by 10% since 2015 • In the past 12 months, 27% of this branch's customers have been using nearby branches • We’ve identified that only 82 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking Proposals to close any branch are made by the Barclays local leadership teams and verified at a national level ahead of any closure announcement. If you have any questions and concerns about these changes then please feel free to get in touch with Kirsty Baker, your Market Director for Sussex & Surrey.

  • Aldershot Parliamentary Constituency Profile
Aldershot Parliamentary Constituency Profile The Constituency Aldershot Constituency is in the north eastern corner of Hampshire and is bordered by Berkshire and Surrey. It comprises the two large towns of Aldershot and Farnborough, which make up the Borough of Rushmoor (named after the Rushmoor Arena, which historically was used for large scale Military Tattoos), and two wards in the neighbouring, more rural, Hart District Council area - Blackwater & Hawley and Frogmore & Darby Green. It has an electorate of approximately 79,000 (2011). Aldershot has long been known as the Home of the British Army and there is still a strong presence, despite the ongoing, large-scale redevelopment of a major part of the military town for residential use in the Aldershot Urban Extension. Farnborough is famous as the birthplace of British aviation in 1908, and there are many reminders of this heritage, including the FAST Museum. Farnborough Airfield is now an operational high-end general aviation airport, still hosting the biennial Farnborough International Airshow. BAE Systems is a multi-national defence, security and aerospace company occupying a site on the Farnborough Aerospace Centre and QinetiQ is another defence technology company, with its headquarters in Farnborough, on the Cody Technology Park. Transport The Constituency has excellent transport links, with railway lines serving Waterloo and Southampton, Portsmouth and the South West, with further links to Reading and Guildford. The M3 is easily accessed, providing a link to the M25. The A331 Blackwater Valley Relief Road connects via the A31 to the A3 for London and Portsmouth. Electoral wards The electoral wards within the Aldershot Constituency are: • The entire Borough of Rushmoor (which is the Lib Dem Rushmoor Local Party) • Blackwater & Hawley and Frogmore & Darby Green, which are in the Hart District Council area (in the Lib Dem Hart and North East Hampshire Local Partly).

SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISION - CONTRIBUTING TO INNOVATIVE KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND OPEN EXPERTISE Synnöve Karvinen-Niinikoski Introduction The construction and development of knowledge and expertise has become the central focus of organisational development and organisational learning in the rapidly changing societies of our post-modern era. This is also opening a new role for professional supervision, especially in the field of social work. Our understanding of knowledge and knowledge creation is changing. Knowledge and expertise are understood to be in a new way reflexive by their nature very much due to contingency and ambiguity in our post-modern world. There is a shift from acquisition and transmission of knowledge to construction and invention of knowledge, towards innovative knowledge production. Expertise shows itself more and more as a mechanism of reframing problems, which incorporates not only scientific judgements or technical decisions but also more basic and deeper social and cultural predispositions and commitments. (Eräsaari 2003.) In social work this shift toward constructive expertise matches the urge to cope with the ever-changing complexity that has to be dealt with in the everyday practices of the profession. One could actually speak of a paradox of scientific and professional expertise (Nowotny 2000). In our traditions of modernity we used to think about professional expertise as institutionalised and individually mastered specialist knowledge based on scientific evidence and reason. Today the trend is towards de-institutionalisation, hybrid forms of organisation and co-operative mastering of knowing and knowledge production, towards open expertise produced in multi-actor networks.
