Ancient Origins of Lordship
THE ANCIENT ORIGINS OF THE LORDSHIP OF BOWLAND Speculation on Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Norse and Brythonic roots William Bowland The standard history of the lordship of Bowland begins with Domesday. Roger de Poitou, younger son of one of William the Conqueror’s closest associates, Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, is recorded in 1086 as tenant-in-chief of the thirteen manors of Bowland: Gretlintone (Grindleton, then caput manor), Slatebourne (Slaidburn), Neutone (Newton), Bradeforde (West Bradford), Widitun (Waddington), Radun (Radholme), Bogeuurde (Barge Ford), Mitune (Great Mitton), Esingtune (Lower Easington), Sotelie (Sawley?), Hamereton (Hammerton), Badresbi (Battersby/Dunnow), Baschelf (Bashall Eaves). William Rufus It was from these holdings that the Forest and Liberty of Bowland emerged sometime after 1087. Further lands were granted to Poitou by William Rufus, either to reward him for his role in defeating the army of Scots king Malcolm III in 1091-2 or possibly as a consequence of the confiscation of lands from Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria in 1095. 1 As a result, by the first decade of the twelfth century, the Forest and Liberty of Bowland, along with the adjacent fee of Blackburnshire and holdings in Hornby and Amounderness, had been brought together to form the basis of what became known as the Honor of Clitheroe. Over the next two centuries, the lordship of Bowland followed the same descent as the Honor, ultimately reverting to the Crown in 1399. This account is one familiar to students of Bowland history. However, research into the pattern of land holdings prior to the Norman Conquest is now beginning to uncover origins for the lordship that predate Poitou’s lordship by many centuries. -

Chapter 4 The Anglian Period: The Royal Ladies of Castor [1] St. Kyneburgha of Castor: from Mercian princess to Northumbrian queen Castor Parish Church stands upon an escarpment, which has been occupied from at least the Roman period. It bears a unique dedication to the seventh-century saint, Kyneburgha or Cyneburh, a Mercian princess and erstwhile queen of Northumbria who, according to local tradition, retired from court in order to establish a nunnery on the site of an abandoned early fourth-century villa. Reliable, near-contemporary information relating to Kyneburgha is limited to a single reference in Venerable Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica (c. 731), in which she was described as the sister of Peada, King of the Middle Angles, and the wife of Alhfrith, a Christian prince of Northumbria [2]. From this statement we may deduce that she was also the daughter of the unrepentant heathen king, Penda of Mercia (c. 626-c. 655), and his consort, Cynewise, whose stronghold was in the Tamworth area of the Trent Valley [3]. All subsequent references to Kyneburgha are either of post-Conquest date or survive only in the form of twelfth-century copies and, consequently, are much less trustworthy [4]. Nor are there any archaeological finds to substantiate Kyneburgha’s relationship with the Castor site. However, by examining all of the available sources, in conjunction with place-name and sculptural evidence, it may be possible to gain an insight into the life and times of this remarkable lady. Kyneburgha was born during an era when England was ruled by a few aristocratic families, both Christian and pagan, who intermarried in attempts to form alliances and to found dynasties in rival provinces. -
Saint Etheldreda Of
Æthelthryth Æthelthryth (or Æþelðryþe; about 636 – June 23, 679) is the name for the Anglo-Saxon saint known, particularly in a religious context, as Etheldreda or Audrey. She was an East Anglian princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and Abbess of Ely. 1 Life Æthelthryth was probably born in Exning, near Newmarket in Suffolk. She was one of the four saintly daughters of Anna of East Anglia, all of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys. The kingdom of East Anglia (Early Saxon period) Æthelthryth made an early first marriage in around 652 to Tondberct, chief or prince of the South Gyrwe. She managed to persuade her husband to respect her vow of 2 Legacy perpetual virginity that she had made prior to their mar- riage. Upon his death in 655, she retired to the Isle of Ely, which she had received from Tondberct as a mourning Bede told how after her death, Æthelthryth’s bones were gift. disinterred by her sister and successor, Seaxburh and that her uncorrupted body was later buried in a white, marble Æthelthryth was subsequently remarried for political rea- coffin. 1 Queens, Concubines and the Myth of Marriage More Danico: Royal Marriage Practice in tenth and eleventh-century England. J. L. Laynesmith Eadwig the All Fair, king of the English (r. 955-957/9), was, according to the majority of eleventh and twelfth century authors who described him, ‘a wanton youth, and one who misused his personal beauty in lascivious behaviour’.1 Chroniclers and hagiographers alike linked this ‘shameless conduct’ with Eadwig’s poor governance of the church and saw his loss of power in Mercia and Northumbria as apt divine punishment. Accounts of his vice centred on a beautiful kinswoman of his, Æthelgifu, and her daughter, Ælfgifu, who both ‘enticed him to intimacy’.2 According to the earliest Life of St Dunstan, matters came to a head in January 956 when Eadwig mysteriously abandoned his own coronation feast. Archbishop Oda demanded that the king be found and only Abbot Dunstan of Glastonbury dared to incur the royal wrath. He discovered Eadwig ‘wallowing between the two of them in evil fashion, as if in a vile sty’.3 Dunstan rebuked the women, hauled Eadwig to his feet and dragged the unwilling king back to his coronation banquet. Æthelgifu swore revenge and duly engineered Dunstan’s exile. In Eadmer’s Life of St Oda, the archbishop subsequently sent soldiers to seize the woman with whom the king had most frequently ‘cavorted in rude embraces’, probably meaning Ælfgifu.4 Oda then branded her on the face with a white hot iron and banished her to Ireland. When she recklessly tried to return to the kingdom she was captured at Gloucester where she was hamstrung ‘so that she could travel no further in pursuit of her vagrant and whorish way of life’. -

English Language and Literature Derwentwater Independent Hostel is located in the Borrowdale Valley, 3 miles south of Keswick. The hostel occupies Barrow House, a Georgian mansion that was built for Joseph Pocklington in 1787. There are interesting references to Pocklington, Barrow House, and Borrowdale by Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey. Borrowdale and Keswick have been home to Coleridge, Southey and Walpole. The Way of the Sea
1 The Way of the Sea Jarrow to Warkworth Introduction The Way of the Sea has been set up as one of the new Northern Saints Trails to provide a link between Warkworth on St Oswald's Way and another new Northern Saints Trail, The Way of Learning. Linking these three routes together provides a continuous 124 mile pilgrimage route between Lindisfarne and Durham. This route can of course be walked in either direction. When we think of the Northern Saints like Aidan and Cuthbert, we rightly think of them as great walkers and it’s likely that they will sometimes have walked along this coast, but actually it’s probably more likely that they will have taken the actual way of the sea! Aidan was closely linked with monastic settlements in South Shields and Hartlepool, so he probably sailed from Lindisfarne to those places which would have been quicker and, before the Vikings started their raids, safer too. The Way of the Sea itself is 62 kilometres or 38.5 miles in length. You may occasionally find Northern Saints Trails signs, but this route is the same as the England Coast Path all the way from North Shields to Warkworth so follow the ECP signs which are frequent. Sometimes you may see an acorn symbol as the ECP is one of the National Trails. You will also find Northumberland Coast Path signs between Cresswell and Warkworth. The coastal path itself generally stays on the higher ground, but in some places such as Druridge or Whitley bays you may prefer to walk on the sand. -

Chapter 10 The Northumbrian Attack on Brega in a.d. 684 David A.E. Pelteret One of the most puzzling episodes in the history of Northumbria is the attack on Brega in the midlands of Ireland instigated by Ecgfrith, king of the Nor- thumbrians, in the year before he died. Anglo-Saxon sources do not mention any reason for the attack. This chapter suggests that Ecgfrith’s motive lay in the nature of his kingdom at the time and that this explanation is consonant with Irish annalistic evidence.1 Sources The report of the attack on Brega in the Irish Annals is laconic: for example, the Annals of Ulster, s.a. 685.2 states: “The Saxons lay waste Mag Breg, and many churches, in the month of June.”2 Fortunately the Venerable Bede, writing in a judgmental passage imbued with over four decades of hindsight, provides in his Historia ecclesiastica iv.26 a few fragments of additional information that are relevant: In the year of our Lord 684 Ecgfrith, king of Northumbria, sent an army to Ireland under his ealdorman Berht, who wretchedly devastated a harm- less race that had always been most friendly to the English, and his hostile bands spared neither churches nor monasteries. The islanders resisted force by force so far as they were able, imploring the merciful aid of God and invoking His vengeance with unceasing imprecations. After relating how Ecgfrith was killed the next year, on 20 May, in an attack on the Picts that his friends had advised against, Bede says that 1 Later sources dealing with the impact of the attack on Brega are not discussed here. -

Abstract This thesis investigates several key aspects of warfare and its participants in the Viking Age insular world via a comparison of the image which warriors occupy in heroic literature to their concomitant depiction in sources which are primarily non- literary in character, such as histories, annalistic records, and law codes. Through this method, the thesis seeks to add to the scholarship regarding organized violence in this era in two principle manners. -

Deira extended from the Humber to the Tyne, and Bernicia from the Tyne to the Tweed. In A.D. 547, Ida, an Angle chief, came to Flamborough H ead with a large contingent of his countrymen, including their wives and families, in forty ships, and proceeding to Bernicia, founded that kingdom as its first king. H e died in A.D. 559 and was succeeded successively by his six sons, during whose reigns the Britons re-conquered a considerable portion of the kingdom. lElla, another Angle chief, became king of D eira in A.D . 560 and died in A.D. 588. JETHELFRITH, king of Bernicia, son of lEthelric and grandson of Id a, and also son-in-law of lElla, seized the kingdom of Deira in A. D. 593. H e united it to Berni cia, and after exiling H ereric, the boy king, and E adwine, the infant son of lElla, founded the kingdom of Northumbria. By his victory over the Britons at the battle of Chester, A.D . 607, he extended his kingdo m to the Dee and th us added that city to his domain.
