C h a m b e r l i n a n d W i l t o n I v i e The frequency with which members of the Agelenid genus Cybaeus appeared in collections made by the authors in the mountainous and timbered sections of the Pacific coast region and the representations therein of various apparently undescribed species led to the preparation of this review of the known North American forms. One species hereto fore placed in Cybaeus is made the type of a new genus Cybaeina. Most of our species occur in the western states; and it is probable that fur ther collecting in this region will bring to light a considerable number of additional forms. The drawings accompanying the paper were made from specimens direct excepting in a few cases where material was not available. In these cases the drawings were copied from the figures published by the authors of the species concerned, as indicated hereafter in each such case, but these drawings were somewhat revised to conform with the general scheme of the other figures in order to facilitate comparison. -

In total, the character matrix includes 47 taxa: 35 linyphiids representing the currently used subfamilies of Linyphiidae (Stemonyphantinae, Mynogleninae, Erigoninae, and Linyphiinae (Micronetini plus Linyphiini)) and 12 outgroup species representing nine araneoid families (Pimoidae, Theridiidae, Nesticidae, Synotaxidae, Cyatholipidae, Mysmenidae, Theridiosomatidae, Tetragnathidae, and Araneidae). BMC Ecology 2013, 13:44 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-6785/13/44 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Spiders (Araneae) of Churchill, Manitoba: DNA barcodes and morphology reveal high species diversity and new Canadian records Gergin A Blagoev1*, Nadya I Nikolova1, Crystal N Sobel1, Paul DN Hebert1,2 and Sarah J Adamowicz1,2 Abstract Background: Arctic ecosystems, especially those near transition zones, are expected to be strongly impacted by climate change. Because it is positioned on the ecotone between tundra and boreal forest, the Churchill area is a strategic locality for the analysis of shifts in faunal composition. This fact has motivated the effort to develop a comprehensive biodiversity inventory for the Churchill region by coupling DNA barcoding with morphological studies. The present study represents one element of this effort; it focuses on analysis of the spider fauna at Churchill. Results: 198 species were detected among 2704 spiders analyzed, tripling the count for the Churchill region. Estimates of overall diversity suggest that another 10–20 species await detection. Most species displayed little intraspecific sequence variation (maximum <1%) in the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, but four species showed considerably higher values (maximum = 4.1-6.2%), suggesting cryptic species. All recognized species possessed a distinct haplotype array at COI with nearest-neighbour interspecific distances averaging 8.57%. Three species new to Canada were detected: Robertus lyrifer (Theridiidae), Baryphyma trifrons (Linyphiidae), and Satilatlas monticola (Linyphiidae). The first two species may represent human-mediated introductions linked to the port in Churchill, but the other species represents a range extension from the USA. -

Both of his parents, Gleb K. Mikhailov (1929–2021) and Galina R. Mikhailova (1926–2019), were research scientists. Kirill’s father was an expert in the history of mechanics, and mother, a biologist. Since early childhood Kirill was raised mainly by his maternal grandparents, Ro- man P. Nosov and Antonina V. Nosova. Kirill’s grandfather, a CPSU official and a career administrator at the Ministry of Energetics, retired from his post in 1965 to take care of the grandson. Kirill’s grandmother, an obstetrician by profession, received disability at a military plant during the WWII in evacuation, and was a housewife after the war. In 1978, Kirill began his studies at the Division of Biology (Biologicheskii Fakul’tet) of the Moscow State University (below, MSU). Even earlier, as a schoolboy, Kirill used to buy books on zoology, especially separate issues of the Fauna of the USSR and Keys to the Fauna of the USSR, then relatively cheap and available. -

It will be currently updated, according to the progress of cognition of the country's spider fauna. I give also a list of the most important faunistic and other publications after 1971 which add any species new to the Polish fauna (or cross out some of them). The nomenclatural changes were regarded as far as possible to unify the names used in Polish arachnological literature with those in foreign check-lists and catalogues (e.g. PLATEN & al. 1995, commented by BLICK 1998), NENTWIG et. at. 2003, TANASEVITCH 2004, and first of all, with the latest version (5.0) of the "Spider Catalog" by PLATNICK (2004). The species, which occurrence in Poland is certain, have serial numbers, some exceptions which need confirmation or re-examination are marked with "X" sign instead of a number; doubtful species were not listed, though named in earlier papers (pre-1971). Of them, 85 species are new to the mountain, while 20 are also new to the fauna of FYR of Macedonia. According to their current distribution the established species can be assigned to 17 zoogeographical categories, grouped into 5 complexes (Cosmopolitan, Holarctic, European, Mediterranean, Endemics of Balkans). Dominant are Holarctic species (66.0%) followed by European (16.5%) and Mediterranean (9.3%). The endemics (6.2%) and Southeast European species (1.7%) emphasize the local character of this fauna, but its low percentage suggests an important process of colonization.
