Meanwood Park is an important part of this and is enjoyed for its peace and tranquillity by all sorts of people, including families with children.The proposer has put forward several family-friendly ideas, but If the cafe were licensed, it would be less attractive to families, and the noise levels, traffic and litter in the park would inevitably increase. The proposer wants to make it "The epitome of Cafe Bar culture". Why? There are already plenty of bars in Headingley and Meanwood. The noise carries a long way, along and up the valley, and would affect residents, despite claims to the contrary in section F of the application. For example, I live in Far Headingley and can hear the children playing in the school near the cafe, so the much louder music, till 11 and 72 at night, is almost certain to be a nuisance If a licence were to be granted, the times could easily be extended, especially by a new owner. However I don't support the licensing of this premises to sell alcohol, as it is too near a school and a children's playground, and is not inclusive of those who already use the park and the area most. There are not sufficient parking facilities - school families are already encouraged not to drive down, the facllity has already been refused as a taxi base and this will increase taxi traffic along this dead end. I would like to see extended parking available, and an unlicensed cafe which is available to the whole community, including all ages. I do not object to the license for plays/live or recorded music/sport/dancing in principle, but I currently object to the granting of these licenses because the parking available would have to be increased to a realistic number of spaces in advance. A bigger capacity car park would also be a great facility for the park as a whole, the park sports facilities, and the school. I believe that a cafe bar in Meanwood Park can do similar. Having a responsible community-focused buslness in the park can help to regulate any anti-social behaviour elsewhere in the park, allowing the safe use of the park for everybody.

    Individual and Institution in the Musical Life of Leeds 1900-1914 Robert Demaine Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Music July 2000 Abstract In the years immediately before the First World War the city of Leeds enjoyed a rich and diverse musical life which has remained largely unchronicled thanks in part to an emphasis on London in much English musical history. This thesis attempts to redress the balance by charting the development of local institutions in the fields of choral, orchestral and chamber music which were created by the industry and dedication of a small number of outstanding individuals, now long-forgotten, whose efforts in the cause of Leeds music are placed within their social and historical context. The influence of the Leeds Triennial Festival, that cornerstone of the city's musical reputation in the latter half of the nineteenth century, is considered along with the work of the two leading choral societies which dominated so much of Leeds musical life at the time. Pioneering enterprises, such as those to establish a permanent municipal orchestra in the city and a regular series for the performance of contemporary chamber music, are examined in detail against the backdrop of a society undergoing fundamental change. It is often assumed that the First World War brought a violent and sudden end to what might be viewed as a golden age in English music. This thesis will show how the forces of change were already being experienced within local musical institutions which were attempting to come to terms with them even as the apocalyptic events of 1914 were approaching.

Photo: Lizzie Coombes THE HEADINGLEY POSTIE Whether the weather is sunny or chill, The Headingley Postie rides over the hill, And into the suburb that she likes the most, To deliver her bag full of Headingley post, And as she distributes the Headingley mail, She’ll often pick up a few Headingley tales – Tales to astonish and tales to astound – Told by the people she meets on her round. 1 I first came to live in Headingley over 50 years ago, and spent the early years pushing“ a pram with baby and toddlers around the local shops: butcher, baker, Cowley’s the greengrocer, Groocock’s the upmarket grocer, with the occasional luxury of a coffee in Silvio’s café or a browse in Walker’s bookshop. Headingley became my familiar and much-loved home ground and long years later, after retirement from teaching and the Open University, I discovered the pleasure of finding out about its past, exploring its hidden corners and hearing the stories and memories of some of the people who had lived all their lives there. Joining the Thoresby historical society gave me access to a wonderful resource of maps, books, and pictures to help with research, together with other local archives. I started working on the history of our home in Woodbine Terrace (off Grove Lane) and that led on inevitably to an exploration of the history of the streets around and the village itself.

It was reported that additional funding was not available for these services. 2.3 It was queried if it might be possible to seek a financial contribution Richard from the universities for the high levels of services provided within the Brown student areas. It was agreed that any approach to the universities and Andy Appendix 9 should be supported by statistics demonstrating that higher levels of Milnes services are provided to the student areas as compared to the rest of the city.

Welcome to the Leeds Lit Fest 2020 Programme Leeds Lit Fest is supported by: Our 2nd Festival will see over 100 events take place between Wednesday 4th and Sunday 8th March in some of the city’s finest buildings and also some of its most unusual and unlikely locations. The Festival is intended to be like no other lit fest in the UK. Alongside events featuring some of the country’s finest writers will be both a number of quirky and unusual non-traditional literary events and projects, as well as an ‘Inspiring the city’ events programme happening throughout the city, not just in the city centre. No other literature festival has attempted to embrace a city-wide approach in this way and will mean the Leeds Lit Fest is the largest literature focused festival the city has ever hosted. Across the course of the 5 days, the Festival will host alongside talks, panel discussions and readings, a series of walks, theatre and music performances, spoken word nights, a sound installation, two immersive literature adventures, a film screening, and Live Art, in more than 20 venues. We want to inspire the city to get involved in writing so alongside this ambitious programme of events will be a number of creative writing workshops featuring some of the region’s finest writers passing on their expertise. There will also be a series of podcasts linked to these workshops that we hope will provide inspiration for as many people as possible to engage in writing.
