This work is dedicated to his memory. 3 Abstract This thesis offers new perspectives on the Yiddish poet and novelist Chaim Grade, exarnining his reflections on the world ofhistoric Lithuanian Jewry from the outset ofhis career through his post-Holocaust novels. Chapter one explores the gap between the historical reality of interwar Vilna and its literary representation in his novel Di agune and questions the widely accepted view ofthis work as a credible historical source. Chapter two deals with Grade's depiction ofhis experience as a student in a Novaredok Musar yeshiva, contrasting the depiction ofthis yeshiva in the poem Musernikes (1938) and the novel Tsemakh atlas (1967). The writer's shift from a tierce condemnation of the Novaredok Yeshiva to a more moderate and affectionate view as a post-Holocaust writer is explained as the older Grade's attempt to reconcile his art and identityas a modem Jew with the religious world he had forsaken. 4 Résumé Cette thèse présente de nouvelles perspectives sur l' œuvre du poète et écrivain yiddish, Chaim Grade, examine ses pensées sur la communauté juive de la Lituanie historique, et retrace son travail à ses débuts, abordant également ses écrits après l 'Holocauste. Le premier chapitre traite de l'écart entre la réalité historique de Vilna pendant l'entre-deux­ guerres et la représentation littéraire dans son roman Di agune, mettant en doute l'opinion fort répandue selon laquelle cette œuvre constitue une source historique crédible. Le deuxième chapitre examine la représentation que fait Grade de son expérience comme étudiant au yeshiva de l'École Novaredok Musar, ce qui contraste avec la représentation de cette école dans le poème Musernikes (1938) et dans le roman Tsemakh atlas (1967). Le changement dans sa pensée d'une condamnation virulente du yeshiva Novaredok à une opinion plus modérée après l'Holocauste constitue son effort à concilier son art, son identité en tant que Juif dans le monde actuel et la religion qu'il a abandonnée. 5 Introduction At the end ofWorld War II, after five years as a refugee in the Soviet Union, the Yiddish poet Chaim Grade found himselfback in Vilna, the city ofhis childhood and youth. In Vilna (lovingly known in Jewish tradition as Yerushalayim deLita, "the Jerusalem of Lithuania"), the city famed for its long history as a center of Torah study and for its influential role as the cradle of the modem Jewish currents of Enlightenment, Hebraism, Yiddishism, Zionism and socialism, Grade was directly confronted with the enormity of the destruction and loss wreaked by the Holocaust. Overwhe1med by the annihilation of the entire Jewish community of Vilna by the Nazis, Grade realized that he was now the orphan ofhis family, neighbours and friends, ofthe entire rich and variegated Jewish cultural world which the Nazis had destroyed. In order to understand the intricate story of the Lithuanian Jewish writer, Chaim Grade, whose career encompassed various geographic locations

    Caught between Continents The Holocaust and Israel’s Attempt to Claim the European Jewish Diaspora Zachary Kimmel Columbia University Abstract Israel’s idea of its sovereignty over Jewish cultural production has been essential in defining national mythology and self-consciousness ever since its founding as a state in 1948. But by what right does Israel make such claims? This article examines that question through exploring three legal cases: Franz Kafka’s manuscripts, the historical records of Jewish Vienna, and the literary estate of Lithuanian-born Chaim Grade. All three cases reveal a common jurisprudential and cultural logic, a rescue narrative that is central to the State of Israel itself. To this day, Israel maintains an idea of its sovereignty over Jewish cultural production, and a study of these cases demonstrates how the Holocaust plays as decisive a role in the creation and implementation of Israeli policy and jurisprudential practice as it has in its national identity more broadly. Article After decades of legal wrangling, a Tel Aviv court ruled in June 2015 that the manuscripts of Franz Kafka must be handed over to the National Library of Israel.1 The final batch of Kafka’s papers arrived in Jerusalem on August 7, 2019.2 Despite the fact that Kafka died in Prague in 1924, Israel’s lawyers argued that his manuscripts ought to be the legal property of the Jewish nation-state. Yet by what right does Israel make such claims—even over the claims of other nations where the artists in question were citizens, or ignoring the ethno- religious identifications of the artists themselves? This article examines that question, exploring the fate of Kafka’s manuscripts as well as legal battles over two other important archives with Jewish lineage: the historical records of Jewish Vienna and the literary estate of Lithuanian-born Chaim Grade.

Built in the 17th century, the synagogue was named after Rabbi Shmuel Eliezer Eidels (1555 – 1631), author of the work Hidushei Maharsha. In 1795 the Jews of Ostrog escaped death by hiding in the synagogue during a military attack. A Haven from Persecution YIVO’s dedication to the study of the history of Jews in Poland reflects the importance of Polish Jewry in the Jewish world over a period of one thou- sand years, from medieval times until the 20th century. In early medieval Europe, Jewish communities flourished across a wide swath of Europe, from the Mediterranean lands and the Iberian Peninsu- la to France, England and Germany. But beginning with the first crusade in 1096 and continuing through the 15th century, the center of Jewish life steadily moved eastward to escape persecutions, massacres, and expulsions. A wave of forced expulsions brought an end to the Jewish presence in West- ern Europe for long periods of time. In their quest to find safe haven from persecutions, Jews began to settle in Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia, and parts of Ukraine, and were able to form new communities there during the 12th through 14th centuries.

Special focus on the complex and fateful interrelationship of Jews with non-Jews in the region. Students will consider and discuss a series of selected case studies, and research, write, and turn in a semester paper on a topic of their choice. Use of sources in foreign languages is not required, but is encouraged. May be retaken with change in topic to 9 credits maximum. Prereq: grad st. Requirements 1. Regular participation in class meetings and discussions. See attendance policy below. 2. Brief response papers (2-3 pp.), required but ungraded, on readings assigned for class meetings of Sept 16, Sept 23, Sept 29, and Oct 7.     “Gathering the Dispersed of Israel”: The Evolution of a Kabbalistic Prayer Addendum for Tiqqun Qeri Patrick Benjamin Koch University of Hamburg; [email protected] ■ Abstract This article traces the evolution of a kabbalistic prayer supplication that was designed to purify male Jews from pollution caused by improper seminal emission. In doing so, it focuses on the metaphysical rationale behind it, its function, and its metamorphosis from a highly technical practice into a mainstream devotional practice. It addresses how notions of sexual pollution (qeri) were contextualized in Lurianic Kabbalah and how they were later embedded in kabbalistic manuals and prayer books. Furthermore, the article examines Jewish-Christian and inner- Jewish debates that emerged in connection with the effects of spilling semen in vain. Special attention is paid to possible social factors that may have impacted the increased anxiety about male bodily fluids and “misguided” desires. Home Tongue Earthquake: The Radical Afterlives Of Yiddishland Abstract HOME TONGUE EARTHQUAKE presents a case study (or test) of diasporic Ashkenazi translingual poetics in the twentieth- and twenty-first century, which inflects and e-accentsr Hebrew and English, among other national host languages. The transterritorial civilization of diaspora Ashkenaz spread in the late- nineteenth century from “Ashkenaz II” across disparate geographies—from the Americas to Ottoman Palestine, and beyond, via forced migration—and became, in the twentieth-century, the rhizomatic language space known as “Yiddishland”: a modernist shorthand for the prolifically scattered sites of stateless Yiddish culture situated, though never settled, across the globe. This dissertation traces the poetic and aesthetic relations between five diasporic translingual Ashkenazi writers who each in their own mode recognized the terminal widening gap between themselves and the languages they inhabited, and who wrote into this chasm, rather than ignoring it, using the very rejected accented materials at hand—those cast out by monolingual ideological forces—as sustenance for a resistant poetics of survival.
