This has impacted upon the social, cultural, political and economic landscape of the entire globe. Though academic interest goes back little early, the phenomenon got the world wide attention as late as 1990s. We have witnessed more proactive engagement of various organizations at national and international level such as UN bodies. There was also growing research interest in the areas. Large number of institutions got engaged in research on diaspora-international migration-refugee-transnationalism. Wide range of research and publications in these areas gave a new thrust to the entire issue and hence advancing further research. The recent emphasis on diaspora’s development role further accentuated the attention of policy makers towards diaspora. The most underemphasized perhaps, the role of diaspora and transnational actors in the overall development process through capacity building, resource mobilization, knowledge sharing etc. are growing areas of development debate in national as well as international forums. There have been policy initiatives at both national and international level to engage diaspora more meaningfully since last one decade. There is a need for more wholistic understanding of the enrite phenomena to facilitate researchers and stakeholders engaged in the various issues related to diaspora and transnationalism. Similarly, we find the areas such as social, political and cultural vis a vis diaspora also attracting more interest in recent times as forces of globalization intensified in multi direction. -

Hindu Music in Bangkok: the Om Uma Devi Shiva Band
Volume 22, 2021 – Journal of Urban Culture Research Hindu Music In Bangkok: The Om Uma Devi Shiva Band Kumkom Pornprasit+ (Thailand) Abstract This research focuses on the Om Uma Devi Shiva, a Hindu band in Bangkok, which was founded by a group of acquainted Hindu Indian musicians living in Thailand. The band of seven musicians earns a living by performing ritual music in Bangkok and other provinces. Ram Kumar acts as the band’s manager, instructor and song composer. The instruments utilized in the band are the dholak drum, tabla drum, harmonium and cymbals. The members of Om Uma Devi Shiva band learned their musical knowledge from their ancestors along with music gurus in India. In order to pass on this knowledge to future generations they have set up music courses for both Indian and Thai youths. The Om Uma Devi Shiva band is an example of how to maintain and present one’s original cultural identity in a new social context. Conference on Inter-Asian Connections Detail of migration map of Asia: courtesy UNHCR Conference Proceedings February 21-23, 2008 Dubai, United Arab Emirates Co-Organized by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Dubai School of Government (DSG) Funded by the Ford Foundation Sponsored by DSG, Zayed University, the University of Dubai, the National Bank of Dubai, and Dubai Properties INTRODUCTION This international conference brought together over one hundred fifty leading scholars from renowned universities to explore an exciting new frontier of “Inter-Asian” research. The conference was organized around eleven concurrent workshops featuring innovative research from the social sciences and related disciplines on themes of particular relevance across Asia. Workshop themes, directors, and participants were selected by an SSRC committee in a highly competitive process: the conference organizers received 105 applications for workshop directors and 582 applications for workshop participants. In addition to the eleven workshops, the conference also showcased the work of the South Asia Regional Fellowship Program (SARFP), bringing together fellows who had been awarded collaborative grants to work on inter-country projects in the South Asia region. The structure and schedule of the conference were designed to enable intensive working group interactions on a specific research theme, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern to all participants. Accordingly, a public keynote panel and plenaries addressing different aspects of Inter-Asian research were open to all participants as well as the general public. The concluding day of the conference brought all the workshops together in a public presentation and exchange of research agendas that emerged over the course of the deliberations in Dubai. -

Overview In a interview with the Research Directorate, a research fellow specialized in Yemen, and affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS), an interdisciplinary French public institution (CNRS 4 Dec. 2015) that employs over 11,100 researchers (ibid. July 2015), stated that [translation] "[t]he Bohras are part of an Ismaili minority in Yemen, that has been established for centuries" (research fellow 4 Dec. 2015). Sources indicate that Ismailis are a minority Shi'ite- Muslim sect in Yemen (Reuters 29 Jul. 2015; National Yemen [2015]). Walayah is the first pillar in the Ismaili system. It is the central concept from which all the other pillars take their origin, meaning and contemporary application. It is not only to acknowledge the line of divinely-appointed Imams, which the Ismailis share with the majority of the Shi'a for the first six Imams (although the Ismailis refer to Ali as the Wasi or executor of Muhammad’s will and begin to count the Imams from Hasan onwards), until they diverge due to a dispute about the rightful Imam after Ja'far al-Sadiq {see details in “The Shi'a perspective on Islam”}, but also to follow their ongoing guidance. -

The Institute of Ismaili Studies “Ismailis” Medieval Islamic Civilization: An Encyclopedia Farhad Daftary Early Ismaili History In 148 AH/765 CE, on the death of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq, who had consolidated Imami Shi‘ism, the majority of his followers recognised his son Musa al-Kazim as their new imam. However, other Imami Shi‘i groups acknowledged the imamate of Musa’s older half-brother, Isma‘il, the eponym of the Ismalliyya, or Isma‘il’s son Muhammad. Little is known about the life and career of Muhammad ibn Isma‘il, who went into hiding, marking the initiation of the dawr al-satr, or period of concealment, in early Ismaili history which lasted until the foundation of the Fatimid state when the Ismaili imams emerged openly as Fatimid caliphs. On the death of Muhammad ibn Isma‘il, not long after 179 AH/795 CE, his followers, who were at the time evidently known as Mubarakiyya, split into two groups. A majority refused to accept his death; they recognised him as their seventh and last imam and awaited his return as the Mahdi, the restorer of justice and true Islam. A second, smaller group acknowledged Muhammad’s death and traced the imamate in his progeny. Almost nothing is known about the subsequent history of these earliest Ismaili groups until shortly after the middle of the third AH/ninth century CE. It is certain that for almost a century after Muhammad ibn Ismail, a group of his descendants worked secretly for the creation of a revolutionary movement, the aim of which was to install the Ismaili imam belonging to the Prophet Muhammad’s family (ahl al-bayt) to a new caliphate ruling over the entire Muslim community; and the message of the movement was disseminated by a network of da‘is (summoners). -
