Eighty-four of green algal samples ITS from various sites and cruises in 2010 and 2011 were collected. According to ITS and rbcL sequences, rbcL samples from the rafts of P. yezoensis fell into four clades: Ulva linza-procera-prolifera (LPP) complex, Ulva 5S flexuosa, Blidingia sp. and Urospora spp. However, based on the 5S rDNA, a more resolved DNA marker, only one of the 84 samples belonged to U. prolifera. Combined with the previous reports, it is likely that U. prolifera bloom in Qingdao sea area might consist of more than one origin, and Porphyra cultivation rafts might be one of the causes. Hansen, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University Background Several NIS marine plants with potential for invasion of Alaskan waters have been reported on the west coast of North America. For example, the pervasive algae Sargassum muticum, Lomentaria hakodatensis, and the Japanese eelgrass Zostera japonica are thought to have been introduced with the aquaculture of oysters by the importation of spat from Japan. At least 5 oyster farms occur in Prince William Sound, and all have imported spat. For the herring- roe-on-kelp (HROK) pound fishery, the giant kelp Macrocystis integrifolia is transported to Prince William Sound via plane from southeast Alaska (the northern limit of this species) to be used as a substrate for herring roe. Although the giant kelp cannot recruit in Prince William Sound, it seems likely that other species, accidentally co-transported with Macrocystis, could become established. Our Pilot Study (Ruiz and Hines 1997) also considered several NIS algal species reported from Alaskan waters, including a report of a cosmopolitan species Codium fragile tomentasoides from Green Island. Methods Sample Period. Marine benthic algae, seagrasses, and intertidal lichens were sampled as a part of the cruise aboard the F/V Kristina during 20-28 June 1998, described above for invertebrates. Site Information. A subset of 19 of the 46 sites selected for invertebrate sampling were chosen for the plant study, including 13 intertidal sites (4 within Port Valdez and 9 in Prince William Sound) and 6 off-shore float sites. -

Capsosiphon fulvescens is a filamentous green algae in the class Ulvophyceae. It has been consumed as food with unique flavor and soft texture to treat stomach disorders and hangovers, and its economic value justifies studying its nutritional and potential therapeutic effects. In contrast to these applications, only a few taxonomic studies have been conducted on C. fulvescens.In particular, classification and phylogenetic relationships of the C. fulvescens below the order level are controversial. To determine its phylogenetic position in the class, we used rbcL and 18S rDNA sequences as molecular markers to construct phylogenetic trees. -

Checklist of benthic algae from the As- turias coast (North of Spain). Bol. Cien. Nat. R.I.D.E.A. 51: 135-212. ABSTRACT: An annotated checklist of the marine benthic flora of Asturias coast (North of Spain), based on literature records, herbarium sheets and original data is presented. Ac- cording to our data, the known list of algae totals 437 taxa: 42 Cyanophyta, 239 Rhodophyta, 101 Ochrophyta and 55 Chlorophyta. The number of specific and intraspe- cific taxa is 459: 42 Cyanophyta, 247 Rhodophyta, 111 Ochrophyta and 59 Chlorophyta. Phormidium autumnale, Drachiella spectabilis and Peyssonnelia harveyana are new records for Asturias. In addition, 18 taxa are considered as taxa excludenda, while 34 taxa were recorded as dubious and their presence in the coasts of Asturias must be con- firmed and thoroughly studied in the future. Remarks on the most noteworthy features of the flora of the studied area are included. Also, we present lists of cold-temperate, warm- temperate, Lusitanic Province endemics, and alien species growing in Asturias. Finally, we compared the floristic character of Asturias coast flora with respect to the neighbour- ing regions (Britain, Ireland, Basque coast, Galicia, Portugal, Southern Iberian Peninsu- la, Canary Islands and Atlantic coast of Morocco) applying Feldmann’s [Rhodophyta/ Phaeophyta, or R/P] and Cheney’s ratios [(Rhodophyta+Chlorophyta)/ Phaeophyta, or (R+C)/P].
