Liturgical Calendar 2020-2021 of the Celtic Orthodox Church 1 Liturgical Calendar of the Celtic Orthodox Church 2020-2021 Translated from the French, published by Éditions Hol Levenez Le Bois Juhel 56130 Saint-Dolay, France Cover page: Icon of Saint John the Baptist 2020-2021 Introduction The calendar of the Celtic Orthodox Church begins on the first Sunday of November after All Saints Day (November 1st). This choice reconciles two traditions, one linked to the Syrian Orthodox Church tradition, which begins the liturgical year on the first Sunday of November (after All Saints Day), and the other according to an ancient Western non- Roman custom. It presents the Saints of the Universal Church as well as the principal Saints who have illuminated the history of the Celtic Orthodox Church. The Liturgical year opens before us as a permanent invitation to deepen our spirituality. The calendar answers, “present,” to the call to deepen our faith in Christ Jesus. The Sunday and feast-day readings are an inheritance of many centuries that belongs to our spiritual heritage. The liturgical cycle was developed over a period of time and set up by our Fathers under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is both a divine and human work, providentially proposed to our generation, in order that we may rediscover our spiritual roots in a world that is becoming more and more dechristianized. In this sense this calendar is prophetic for, drawing from ancient Western sources from before the Carolingian reforms, it is surprisingly suited to our times. This appears very clearly when we let ourselves be guided by this grouping together of feasts and readings that give rhythm to our daily life. -

Schlegel used by permission II Carthend Pagan Life and Beliefs The pagan Celts of Ireland lived in a world of fear, from which the loving God was far removed, and in which they were at the mercy of monstrous spirits and arbitrary, insubstantial reality. They were people bound by unreasoned custom and superstition, for they thought that the world was full of hidden "traps" that were triggered by the violation of taboos. The power of the kings was rivaled or even eclipsed by that of the priests, who were called druids. The druids officially ranked next to the kings in social standing, but they usually exercised paramount sway, for no undertaking of any moment was begun without their advice. They were skilled in astronomy and healing; they practiced sorcery in the seclusion of oak groves, where their doings were hidden from the common people; and, through the power that they exercised over the whole society, they imposed upon the common people. The pagans adored a divine being (though not necessarily always and everywhere the same one) to whom they offered sacrifices and from whom they sought all blessings, temporal and eternal. Crom Cruach, the "prince" of all idols in Ireland, stood on Magh Slecht, the "plain of prostration" near the Gothard River, now in the barony of Tullyhaw, County Cavan. This "plain" was a limestone ridge some 400 by 85 yards in extent. From the base of its eastern escarpment issues a strong, clear, and rapid spring, as if a river-god dwelt within his rocky halls beneath the ridge and poured forth this perennial fountain. -

MACKAY, M.A., LL.D., Advocate, SHERIFF OF FIFE AND KINROSS, AN ACCOMPLISHED WORKER IN THE FIELD OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH. INTRODUCTION The following work has two objects in view. The first is to enable the general reader to acquire a knowledge of the significance of the names of places around him—names he is daily using. A greater interest is popularly taken in this subject than is apt to be supposed, and excellent proof of this is afforded by the existence of the strange corruptions which place names are wont to assume by reason of the effort on the part of people to give some meaning to words otherwise unintelligible to them. The other object of the book is to place the results of the writer's research at the disposal of students of the same subject, or of those sciences, such as history, to which it may be auxiliary. The indisputable conclusion to which an analysis of Fife—and Kinross for this purpose may be considered a Fife— part of place names conducts is, that the nomen- clature of the county may be described as purely of Goidelic origin, that is to say, as belonging to the Irish branch of the Celtic dialects, and as perfectly free from Brythonic admixture. There are a few names of Teutonic origin, but these are, so to speak, accidental to the topography of Fife. -

Thomas Rival bishops, rival cathedrals: the election of Cormac, archdeacon of Sodor, as bishop in 1331 Abstract: On 6 July 1331, two procurators arrived in Bergen claiming that Cormac son of Cormac had been elected bishop of Sodor by the clergy of Skye and the canons of Snizort. Their arrival is recorded in a letter sent by Eiliv, archbishop of Nidaros, to two canons of the church of Bergen ordering that there be an examination of the election in the cathedral of Bergen on 12 July 1331. Cormac’s election was contentious for three main reasons: firstly, there was already a new bishop of Sodor; secondly the right to elect a bishop of Sodor seems to have lain with the clergy of Man; and thirdly the king of Scots had the right to present the candidate to the archbishop of Nidaros. This paper examines the identities and careers of both Cormac and his successful rival, Thomas de Rossy, and the potential reasons for Cormac’s claim and its ultimate failure. Therefore, this study reveals some of the underlying geopolitical realities of the diocese of Sodor in the mid-fourteenth century. Key words: medieval; Scotland; Norway; Church; papacy; Hebrides Introduction In the early fourteenth century, the diocese of Sodor, or Sudreyjar meaning Southern Isles in old Norse, encompassed the Isle of Man and the Hebrides. Both the name of the diocese and its place in the ecclesiastical hierarchy were the result of Norwegian settlement and claims to the Hebrides and Man. -

Skye from Somerled to A.D. 1500 G. WS. Barrow THE bigger islands of western Scotland may be, and no doubt have been, classified in various ways. From the standpoint of the historian of medieval Scotland one particularly helpful classification is by language and culture - with the all-important proviso that neither of these features possesses an accepted, self-evident chronology, and for the historian chronology is fundamental. From the geography of Ptolemy of Alexandria, in the second century after Christ, we can deduce that the Big Four, among the islands outwith the Kintyre Peninsula - i.e., omitting Arran - were Lewis, Skye, Mull and Islay (Watson, 1926:6 and at 37-42; Richmond, 1954:134 and at 136). Two of these already had names close to those we recognise today, Skitis and Malaios. We must envisage a northern British, Brittanie-speaking population spread, rather thinly, across the isles. If, taking a hint from Adamnan (Sharpe, 1995: 136- 37 and at 293-95), 1 we call them Picts2 we shall not be led astray, provided that we allow some cultural differences between society in Skye and those in the rich firthlands of Easter Ross or the relatively rich plain of Strathmore (Sutherland, 1997:72-73).3 Between the time of Columba in the sixth century and the time of Somerled in the twelfth Skye must have experienced two major social and cultural revolutions. Prof. Dr. David Thornton July 2019 This thesis succinctly investigates the chronological traces and the historical development of the cult of St. Katherine of Alexandria in Late Medieval Scotland. The main argument of this study evolves around why possibly the cult of St. Katherine has not been examined in the previous literature, although the Katherine-cult was predominantly recognized by the Scottish population. The thesis will trace the cult through gradual methodological and contextual steps, that are, hagiography, liturgy, dedications, and onomastics. The outcome will attest to the necessity of the re-evaluation and recognition that the Katherine-cult in Late Medieval Scotland was not any less significant than the cults of native saints of Scotland.
