"Editorial," Religion, State & Society 28.3
Religion, State & Society, Vo!. 28, No. 3, 2000 Editorial In her article in this issue of Religion, State & Society Janice Broun focuses on a church which has been disabled by its close identification with the secular power. Bulgaria achieved its independence in 1878. The church was granted state subsidies, on which it has in fact remained dependent throughout modern Bulgarian history, and Orthodoxy was declared the official religion of the state. The whole period between independence and the communist takeover was marked by bitter antago nisms, with church leaders defending church autonomy as well as involving them selves in national politics. However, the result was a victory for the secular state. The politicisation of the church hierarchy is widely seen as a factor causing a decline in religious faith and observance among the popUlation. The communists brought church-state relations in Bulgaria to a logical conclusion. The church was named as the 'traditional church of the Bulgarian people' in the 1949 law on confessions, and the patriarchate was restored in 1953. Communist leaders regularly paid tribute to the key role of the church in preserving Bulgarian identity through centuries of tribulation. At the same time the church was transformed into an obedient and useful tool in the hands of the government, which consolidated its hold with persecution and the use of divide-and-rule tactics. This state of affairs mani fested its harmful consequences as soon as communism came to an end. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church suffered a major schism in 1992; the original issue was the validity of the election of the patriarch in the communist period. -

The Social History of the Soča/Isonzo Region in the First World War
89 Petra Svoljšak The social history of the Soča/Isonzo region in the First World War The Slovene soldiers1 Slovenian participation in the Great War (1914–1918) is a classical case study of how an ethni- cally defined community experienced and survived this war. The inhabitants of the provinces of Carniola, Styria, Carinthia, and the Littoral served (mostly) in the Austro-Hungarian army and assumed various roles characteristic of life in uniform – on all four fronts they became prisoners of war, deserters, and rebels. The Slovenes from the Slavia Veneta, citizens of the Kingdom of Italy, were mobilised into the Italian army, which also brought them to the Soča/Isonzo battlefield. Slovenian soldiers for many reasons also joined so-called volun- teer forces: Austro-Hungarian citizens of Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian nationality joined the Serbian army during the Balkan Wars to support the Serbian cause, and later, during World War I, to prevail in the struggle for the creation of a new Yugoslav state. In order to undermine Austria-Hungary’s strength both militarily and as a state, volunteer military units were gathered on the Italian-Austrian front under the command of the Slovenian Reserve Lieutenant Ljudevit Pivko, and for the same reason Slovenian (Yugoslav) volunteer troops were organised in North America. With 7.800.000 to 8.000.000 drafted men during World War I, Austria-Hungary ranked fifth among the belligerent countries, which had conscripted a total of 70 million soldiers. In peacetime, the Austro-Hungarian army kept 36.000 officers and 414.000 soldiers on the active list. -

THE MISSION IN FORMER YUGOSLAVIA - POST-COMMUNIST AND AT WAR by Anton Stres, C.M. Among post-communist countries, those of the former Yugoslavia have had, for the past three years, the unfortunate privilege of attracting wor1d attention to themselves because of the war that rages on their soil. What a war it is! It has been marked by extreme violence which continually transgresses the most fundamental human rights. The consequences, both material and spiritual, will be terrible. And yet, very few people know what it is all about. Even major political leaders do not really understand the roots and the causes of this war. The historical background to the war Yugoslavia was founded immediately after the First World War in 1919. -

Izseljensko Pesništvo Revije Meddobje (1954−2010)
UNIVERZA V LJUBLJANI FILOZOFSKA FAKULTETA ODDELEK ZA SLOVENISTIKO Nika Dolar Izseljensko pesništvo revije Meddobje (1954−2010) Diplomsko delo Mentor: red. prof. dr. Osrednje kulturno društvo slovenskih emigrantov s sedežem v Buenos Airesu, Slovenska kulturna akcija, je začelo leta 1954 izdajati revijo Meddobje, v kateri so objavljali svoja dela številni slovenski izseljenski pesniki in pisatelji. -
