BA Graphic Design & Communication We are very pleased that you have accepted the offer of a place on the Graphic & Communication Design degree course at the University of Leeds. We hope to make your period of study a very rewarding time. The course will be a challenge from beginning to end and if you fully engage throughout your time at Leeds then you will achieve an excellent degree from one of the top universities in the UK. This will assist you in moving on to a career in one of the ‘creative industries’. Many of our graduates move on to careers in graphic design, advertising, marketing, illustration, or photography. These industries are exciting, fast moving and challenging as well as being incredibly rewarding. Engaging with your studies from the beginning will help you to thrive both at University and in your later career. Succeeding will be a challenge and the challenge starts here... Congratulations again on your excellent results. We really look forward to meeting you in September! All the best, Alan Oliver (Programme Manager BA (hons) Graphic and Communication Design) Please read your personalised induction pack carefully. Enclosed you will find: FAQ’s Induction Timetable School of Design Campus guide If you have any questions about any of the information in your welcome pack, or on the Flying Start website, please email [email protected]. Is there anything I need to do before I arrive? It is important that you arrive in September, fully rested but also full of enthusiasm, creativity and that you are ready and eager to get started! With this in mind, here are some activities to get involved with… You must bring an A4 colour printout of a piece of graphic design by a well known graphic designer from the last 100 years that interests or excites you. Be prepared to talk about it – who designed it and why is it successful? Bring a pocket sized object (not electronic) that expresses an aspect of your personality. Take some time thinking about this, push your imagination and be unpredictable. The more unusual, the better! Engage with social media! You will find more information about the programme and you will be able to contact other students (and maybe find out who is at the same halls as you). We’ll use this during the three years as an informal networking space – we post job opportunities there and everyone is free to post inspiring links etc. Join the Graphics Facebook group (G&CD – University of Leeds) www.facebook.com/groups/348065701953087/ Join your own year group (G&CD2019) https://www.facebook.com/groups/2381117475503118/ Start looking and thinking. Start looking at the (design) world around you and recording your thoughts. Get used to jotting down ideas. Do I need to buy any equipment? You need to bring a few basics with you a pen, a pencil and a notebook. We have two main computer clusters within the School (including a Mac cluster) and a digital photography and video studio. We also have a stock of SLRs and camcorders that students can borrow on a weekly basis. The University provides PCs in clusters all around the campus, some open 24 hours a day. If you are considering buying a Mac then we suggest that you wait until you start the first semester as there are discounts available for students which can only be accessed when you’re actually at University. We’ll explain how to access these discounts when you arrive. Do I need to buy any books? You will receive more information about recommended reading over the course of the first semester. We fully recommend that you utilise the University’s libraries as much as possible, you can often find free copies of books online as PDFs and there is definitely nothing wrong with a second-hand copy! As you are reading, keep a reading log, which will be useful throughout your assignments! In the meantime, start reading magazines like Creative Review and Design Week; they are fantastic, as are their websites (creativereview.co.uk and designweek.co.uk). The University library has these magazines, but it will help you if you start reading them before you arrive. Induction Timetable – Graphic Design During your induction week, there will be tons of exciting meetings, talks, events, tours and activities taking place in the School of Design and around campus to help you get to know the staff, your fellow students and the campus. You will receive an updated timetable via your University email closer to induction week, so it is important to get in the habit of checking this regularly, but in the meantime, here are some key dates to put in your diaries!
