Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Conventional historical research by the study of prose medical texts (often in Latin) will provide an index of the depth of the professional knowledge available to the contemporary physician, but examination of lyrical and dramatic poetry provides a measure of the diffusion of this knowledge into the laity. Absolute certainty in Galenic humoral theory comes through in the verses of Chaucer and poets of the later mediaeval period: as poetry is traced through to the seventeenth century, however, scepticism grows and gives way to disbelief, culminating in the . Comedy of Humours genre which actively ridicules it. A similar trend can be traced with respect to astrological medicine: the science of iatromathematica (astrological , medicine) was a cornerstone of mediaeval medicine. Seventeenth century astronomical discoveries mentioned in poetry intended for the educated layman underline the current uncertain status of astrology. The concept of moral retribution as a cause for disease was suggested in fifteenth and sixteenth century poetry. Even by the end of the seventeenth century, the abundant poetical references to syphilis and smallpox indicate that the literate layman was very slow to accept the germ theory advanced by Fracastorius in the mid 1.6th century. Although by the late 1600s, the concept of the circulation of blood had found its way into English poetry, the study of these verses give evidence of the initial chill response to Harvey's ideas in the years immediately after 1628. He is, if he have any depth of vision in him - and without vision, not only do the people perish, but no poetry exists, the interpreter of his age.' Lord GORELL (1948) The Essentials o f Poetry. 9 STARTING POINT I have always had a great love of English poetry, particularly that which was written before the eighteenth century. As a medical student, I became interested in medical allusions in Poetry and published two articles on the subject2. When I was a registrar in 1974, I won the Maccabaëan Prize and Medal of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London for an essay on Medicine in Poetry. I later developed an interest in health education aspects of poetry by which popular verse may be used as a vehicle to educate the laity on some particular aspect of health or hygiene, and in 1980, I wrote a short article about the occupational hazard of lead poisoning in the lead miners of Derbyshire.3 It was the irony in the poem on which that article was based - that mercury should be used as an antidote to lead poisoning - which made me aware of how a study of contemporary poetry gives an insight into the erroneous medical beliefs and practices of the time and how poetry can be used as a method of getting an important health education message to the general public. The use of mercury and the other mercuric medicines were amongst the more pernicious features of nineteenth century medicine." " Not only metallic mercury, but also mercurial "grey powder"(Hydrarg. c. Cret), Calomel, and even teething powers containing mercury for rubbing on infants' gums were used. These remedies go back to the mineral remedies of Paracelsus in the 16th century (vide infra 11.9). For a discussion of mercury in 18th century medicine, see Young (1980). „ APOLOGIA The Queen's English Society gives little practical help over the lamentable lack in English of a suitable word which does not specify the gender of the third person singular.

It is argued that Marvell led a dualistic and compartmentalised life, and that he was in this a typical figure of the age. The dualism is traced in his public career as a Civil Servant and parliamentarian, and in his private career as a poet. It is further maintained that the best poetry of Andrew Marvell derived from his years as a recluse, and the influence of the Metaphysical school of poets.     Looking for Lovelace: Identity, Style and Inheritance in the Poetry of the Interregnum Thesis Submitted by Dosia Reichardt, BA (Hons) James Cook, BA York in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Humanities Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences James Cook University Abstract This thesis discusses the work of the Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace in two contexts in particular: first, within the political and cultural constraints operating during the period of the English Civil War and the Interregnum; second, against the background provided by the work of contemporary, often obscure, poets whose aesthetic and political attitudes help illuminate Lovelace’s own. The study examines a number of apparent paradoxes in the work and status of poets in Lovelace’s milieu. The desire to fashion an individual and lasting literary persona in the mould of Ben Jonson, for example, conflicts with the practice of circulating essentially un-authored lyrics within an educated and exclusive male coterie. Lovelace’s amatory verse is viewed through the prism of contemporary attitudes towards female constancy, but also through seventeenth-century poets’ habitual borrowings from Latin and Greek sources. Lovelace’s attempt at a lengthy pastoral partakes of the cultural poetics of nostalgia for a vanished Court and the genres associated with it. His interest in music and the fine arts inspires many poems which comment on contemporary politics while participating in an immemorial debate about art and artificiality versus nature. His prison and drinking songs have earned him a place in anthologies of poetry as a minor classic, but they also crystallize a conjunction of genres peculiar to the years between 1640 and 1660.

This essay intends to undertake the literary analysis of Sir John Suckling’s poems, ‘Sonnet: Of thee (kind boy)’ and ‘Love’s Clock’, and Robert Herrick’s, ‘The Eye’. Paying particular attention to some of the overriding themes of each piece, where necessary this essay will also consider the polit- ical and historical contexts under which the texts were written and consider to what extent these ef- fected the texts. However, the main focus of this essay will be to consider these works as part of a wider genre and examine some of the contrasts and similarities between Sir John Suckling and Robert Herrick. When approaching both poets it is often commonplace to read their works under the ‘Cava- lier’ label. Therefore, a solid starting point for the examination of these three texts is to first consid- er the role of the Cavalier as poet, and the Cavalier as a literary genre. Suckling is often regarded as being firmly part of this group, that commonly includes poets such as Thomas Carew, Lord Herbert, Richard Lovelace. But to read a Cavalier poet is to not only acknowledge a political stance, indeed a deeply ‘Royalist’ position during the English Civil Wars, it is to also recognise a kind of literary culture and attitude in itself. Robin Skelton puts forth a brief description of the Cavalier attitude, “ the sense that they distrust the over-earnest, the too intense”1. This is a helpful analysis that be- comes useful when assessing the tone of some of the mentioned works, but when examining the significance of particular characteristics of the writers’ poetic techniques it is essential to consider some of the other overriding influences that impacted their style.

    The Cavalier poets Are a members of the aristocracy, wrote their poems in the 17th century and they supported the King Charles I, who was later executed as a result of a civil war. They were known as Royalists. Cavalier poetry mirrored the attitudes of courtiers. The meaning of cavalier is showing arrogant or offhand disregard, carefree and nonchalant. This describes the attitude of Cavalier poets. The Cavalier poets were fond of a tight and chiseled form and practiced shorter lines, precise diction and a tight logical structure. The themes for their poetry included love, cynicism, pagan sensibility and conventional Petrarchism. Some of the Cavalier poets were also influenced by Donne’s Metaphysical poetry like Carew and Suckling. Unlike the Metaphysical poets, the Cavaliers did not engage in serious debates. In fact, Cavalier poetry is much simpler than that of the Metaphysical poetry. Wit and a lot of eroticism are visible in the Cavalier poetry. Cavalier poets were writers of witty and polished lyrics of courtship and gallantry. Characteristics Some of the most prominent Cavalier poets were Thomas Carew, Richard Lovelace, Robert Herrick, and John Suckling. They matched Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare. These poets opposed metaphysical poetry, such as that of John Donne. While poets like John Donne wrote with a spiritual, scientific, and moral focus, the Cavalier poets concentrated on the pleasures of the moment. Metaphysical poets also wrote in figurative, lofty language, while the Cavaliers were simple, being more apt to say what they meant in clear terms. The Cavalier poet wrote short, refined verses, and the tone of Cavalier poetry was generally easy- going.

    CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background of the Study One of the most longstanding features that is considered in the middle of the 17th century English literature is the existence of the Cavalier poets and their notable works. Cavalier poets is “a group of mid-17th century English lyric poets, mostly courtiers of King Charles I during the English Civil War” (“Cavalier Poets”). They wrote poems in a way which embodies the Carpe diem (seize the day) attitude, and it was reflected on the themes of their major works. For this thesis I choose two of the greatest Cavalier poets, Robert Herrick and Richard Lovelace, who bear certain comparable similarities and differences in their works. Robert Herrick is widely considered as the greatest Cavalier poet who has ever lived even though he was not a courtier of Charles I. Herrick was one of Ben Johnson’s followers called “Sons of Ben”, which made him excellent in writing poems. “Herrick, being influenced by his master as a lyricist, was famous for his simplicity, his care for design and detail, and his management of words and rhythms, which made him recognized as a great lyricist in his era” (“English 1 Maranatha Christian University Literature, 1500 to 1799: Biographies; Robert Herrick”). Another reason why I choose Herrick is that he has a strong Cavalier spirit reflected in the themes of his works which promote how everyone should always seize the day physically, by doing and experiencing the earthly pleasures such as making love and getting drunk while one still has time. Paul Willis said that, “For the wistful spirit of Carpe diem, he is truly unsurpassable” (Willis).
