ON VOYEURISM: BEING SEEN ON THE MODERN STAGE by MEGAN MOBLEY (Under the Direction of Dustin Anderson) ABSTRACT At the end of the nineteenth century, playwrights grew more interested in exploring the ramifications of the gaze, looking and being looked at. For existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre, the gaze causes a never-ending battle between our subjective selves, how we view ourselves, and our objective selves, or how others view us. The knowledge of the Other’s gaze allows us to self- reflect on our own existence. Sartre and Oscar Wilde each incorporate the gaze into their plays to explore the battle between our subjective and objective selves, gendered perception, differences in perception, and to undercut or demonstrates the dominant structures of seeing. By first exploring Sartre’s No Exit, I can observe how Sartre’s three main characters demonstrate Mulvey’s theories of the male gaze, a structure of looking which is influenced by the dominant social order.

Thus as New Media celebrated creating a subculture that transcends geographical and temporal spaces, Webtoons become the digital media that allows for the same through its easy accessibility and larger socially relevant themes, all at the tip of your finger. This paper will analyse the narrative form of webtoons and its relevance today. Keywords: Webtoons, subculture, narrative. Internet, the most remarkable creation at the turn of the 20th century made the most revolutionary impact in the cultural, commercial and technological aspect of our lives. Its World Wide Web became the primary instrument in the genesis of the globalized era we are in today with there being no end to communications despite geographical or temporal restrictions thus exciting further innovations in every field. The literary field was no less different. The beginning of the 21st century saw the rise of the New Media that used computers as the main medium for its creation, usage, propagation and distribution. With the creation of Web 2.0 technologies like Facebook and YouTube, the most technologically challenged individuals could harness the medium for storytelling through their uploading of pictures and videos. No longer are words so prominent, but graphics and animation are just as likelyto communicate story content or be used as part of the interactive interface.

HELL IS A GAME SHOW: AN ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION OF THE AFTERLIFE ______________________________ A Thesis Presented to The Honors Tutorial College Ohio University _____________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation from the Honors Tutorial College with the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film _____________________________ by Zachary Stoner May 2018 Stoner 1 “Hell is other people,” shouts Joseph Garcin in Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 play Huis Clos (No Exit). It was this sentiment that summarizes the entire play: man can never escape the judgment of others and in turn is always in the hell of his own self-judgment. It is this quote, in its various forms and parodies, that would come back to haunt me in ironic ways. But it was also this play that took me down the path that would eventually lead me to the creation of my film: Hell is a Game Show. This project starts before Sartre, with my junior year film Near Sighted: The Usually Alone Interview - specifically with a supporting actress by the name of Evie Weir. Her acting was smart and funny, a natural with the kind of dark comedy that I had become so fond of writing. There’s an old Hollywood expression that goes “directing is ninety percent casting,” and I planned to take that a step further and write my thesis film around a talented actress that had a great knowledge of the craft. I had just finished watching two dark comedies: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Seven Psychopaths (2012). Both feature comedy that relies heavily on horrible murder or torture.

This publication originated out of a group discussion among the 6th and 7th grade girls in our new after-school program, the Peninsula Bridge Middle School Academy. These seven students wondered why girls have “bad hair days” and boys don’t. Good ques- tion! Then they inquired, “What defines the beauty standards in our society today and how do we feel about them?” As a team, they decided to explore a range of complex issues as they relate to beauty and societal standards but, more importantly, as they relate to their own personal experiences as teens. This excerpt is from a series of essays and collages created for their final presentation. Frankly, the essays are emotional. They remind us that teens today are navigating a more complex world than ever before. We all probably remember from our own personal experi- ence that navigating the transition from middle school to high school can be tricky business. On top of self-discovery, teens today deal with issues around body image, LBGT rights, de- pression, anxiety, eating disorders, and sadly teen suicide.

He evolved a theory of why certain objects made by unknown craftsmen were so beautiful, and became the founding father of the Japanese folk crafts (mingei) movement. He helped establish, and was the first director of, the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. WHAT IS FOLK CRAFT? 1933 I. The Origin of the Word Mingei The Japanese word for ‘folk craft’ or ‘folk art’, mingei, is actually new to the language. Being new, it is often confused with tribal art, peasant art, or even the more inclusive arts of the common people. In coining this word, however, Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, and I had something simpler and more direct in mind. We took the word min, meaning ‘the masses’ or ‘the people’, and the word gei, meaning ‘craft’, and combined them to create mingei. Literally, the word means ‘crafts of the people’. It is meant to stand in contrast to aristocratic fine arts, and refers to objects used by ordinary people in their daily lives.
