In addition, the interest towards national parks has grown, which can be seen also as an increasing trend in the development of the number of visits to national parks. The aim of this thesis is to explain the cross-sectional variation in the visitation data representing different parks and hiking areas. Another aim is to explore the question of why the visitation in national parks has increased in Finland. These questions are studied separately for the national parks and hiking areas, because the development of the number of visits in national parks and hiking areas has been different. In addition, the separation is made also between Southern Finland and Northern Finland due to for example the size differences and close link of the national parks in Northern Finland with the ski-resort centers. Explanatory factors are divided into supply side factors (services inside and outside the park) and demand side factors (economic and demographics factors). -

Exchange Report
Monthly Activity Log September The start of September is where the orientation activities began. I attend the Aalto party with other UST exchange students and introduced myself to some people in my tutor group. I played games at booths and learnt about the different clubs and societies. With my tutor group I joined Mursujaiset (image on the left)- an event that lasts for 24 hours, the purpose is to officially inaugurate the freshmen (referred to as ‘Mursu’) The day was filled with “interesting” performances, team bonding games and other traditions. Not even sure how to explain the day. I stayed for the first 15 hours and all I can say is that it was a memorable Aalto exchange experience. Even if you can’t stay for the full 24 hours, make sure you’re there for the first 12 hours! I also participated in a 5km run, as someone who is not sporty the run was surprisingly quite fun, and the route was scenic. During the first period (September to Mid-October) I took 3 courses that had quite a heavy workload. The weather is great in September so be sure to go outside and soak up the sun! Sibelius Monument – Mursujaiset 5km Run Aalto Party October After finishing classes from period 1, I had 3 exams that took up the full exam week. During the study break, I went to Oodi Helsinki Library to study, the library is very homey and has amazing interior designs. On the weekend I went with other exchange students to Nuuksio National Park. The national park is closest to the city and is most convenient to get there. -

Attitudes to the wolf divide Finns, and the wolf itself causes opinion to change fast once it has arrived in new areas. The wolf is a perpetual problem environmentally, something people have to live with on a daily basis. But what is the importance of social sustainability and how can protection of the wolf be reconciled with what local people see as a decline in the quality of life? How should the wolf issue be managed and who should act in what situation? These are the questions which have to be addressed in preparations for a national policy on wolves. Studies relating to policy on large carnivores for the University of Helsinki’s Institute for Rural Research and Training (Ruralia) represent a breakthrough, yet people in rural communities have always been at the centre of research. The sustainable use of natural resources is becoming more and more about socio-economic issues, with ecology obviously imposing its own set of condi- tions. -

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Technical Review Vol. 47 No. 2 (June 2010) 6 “Crystal Mover” Automated People Mover for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Transportation Systems and Advanced Technology Division Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), with local partners including MHIA, received an order for its APM (Automated People Mover) system, a passenger transport system connecting the main terminal of Atlanta International Airport and the new rental car facility (CONRAC: Consolidated Rental Agency Complex), from the City of Atlanta, Department of Aviation, in October 2005. It was the third APM system project awarded to MHI in the U.S., following similar systems at Miami International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, and was the first to enter into operational service, in December 2009. MHI's APM system and associated technologies are introduced below. |1. System overview The APM system at Atlanta International Airport comprises of 2.2 km (1.4 miles) of elevated double tracked guideway connecting the airport main terminal (Airport Station) and the rental car facility (Rental Car Center Station). There are three stations in total, including one intermediate station (GICC/Gateway Center Station) (Figure 1). The system is used by customers of the rental car facility, and by people visiting the convention center (GICC: Georgia International Convention Center), which is adjacent to the intermediate station. At the west end of the system, there is a vehicle Maintenance and Storage Facility (M&SF), which also accommodates the Central Control Center for the operation and supervision of the system.
