Ladd Field’s Cold Weather Test Detachment included nine technical shops: Bombsight, Machine, Instrument, Electrical, Sheet Metal, Radio, Radar, Hydraulic, and Parachute. Most of the shops were located in the eastern half of Hangar 1, which also served as the Cold Weather Test Detachment’s main hangar space. The parachute shop was made up primarily of local civilian women whose main job it was to pack parachutes, adjust harnesses, tailor officers’ uniforms, and sew on insignia. However, they were frequently called upon to perform other duties such as making warmth-increasing adjustments to the Air Corps-issued clothing like waist cinches, fur hood liners, and tighter cuffs. They also worked on industrial sewing projects such as wing covers. Irene Noyes, a local civilian who worked in the parachute shop recalled the hard work wing covers required; “We made them right there, with 12-ounce duck. MIC3 only applies to public schools. The U.S. Department of Defense collaborated with The Council of State Governments developed the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children in 2006. A variety of state and federal officials, and national stakeholder organizations representing education, school districts and military families were included with the development of the Compact. The goal of the compact is to replace widely varying treatment of transitioning military students with a comprehensive approach that provides a uniform policy for key issues- eligibility, enrollment, placement and graduation.
