  • Planned Wilshire Complex Reimagines the Suburban Yard
Planned Wilshire complex reimagines the suburban yard July 1, 2016 Rendering of the mixed-use 8600 Wilshire project in Beverly Hills, designed by Beijing-based architect Ma Yansong. (MAD Architects) The quintessential suburban home — grassy yard in the front, house set toward the back — was the unexpected inspiration for a contemporary mixed-use residential complex being built in Beverly Hills. "I thought, 'Can we make a building that looks like a house, and set it in nature, in the middle of Wilshire Boulevard?'” said Ma Yansong, the Beijing-based architect who is leading the project at 8600 Wilshire Boulevard. When Ma scoped out the area before coming up with a design, he was struck by the stark contrast between the quiet residential streets off of that stretch of Wilshire and the commercial and retail businesses on the thoroughfare. "In modern cities, nature is so rare. Because of globalization and urbanization, every big city around the world looks similar,” Ma, 40, said. “They're all doing the same buildings. We get tired of looking at them, and when we move our eye away from those buildings, we find beauty in gardens, trees, parks. We have to be able to put them together." Ma at his offices in Santa Monica. (Genaro Molina / Los Angeles Times) The defining point of 8600 Wilshire will be its “living wall” — the lower exterior of the building will be covered with drought-resistant foliage and succulents. "Living walls are popular in Europe and Australia," Ma said. "To do them here, we are choosing desert and native plants that don't consume much water and will give a special texture to the building.” The plants will be red, yellow and green.

  • Draping Curves on Surfaces for Quad-Meshing of Architectural Surfaces
293 Draping Curves on Surfaces for Quad-Meshing of Architectural Surfaces Sai Kit Fan1, Ajay Joneja2 and Shawn Wang3 1,2,3Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, {iesaikit, joneja, shawnw}@ust.hk ABSTRACT Modern architectural projects increasingly use free form curved surfaces. These are eventually fabricated out of a large set of simpler pieces, or tiles that are more economical to manufacture and maintain. The most common tiling scheme is quad- meshing. Typical tiling approaches work in two stages: an initial pattern of lines is generated to yield an initial tiling, followed by an adjustment stage that optimizes the precise geometry of each tile. In this paper, we introduce an approach to address the first stage: draping of aesthetic 2D curves onto 3D surfaces in order to create initial tiling patterns. We test our approach by using a common aesthetic curve, the Archimedean spiral. Several examples from real-world projects are used to illustrate our method. Keywords: draping, architectural geometry, quad-meshing, surface re-meshing. DOI: 10.3722/cadaps.2013.293-306 1 INTRODUCTION Over the past couple of decades, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of landmark architectural projects across the world. This increase has manifested itself in the form of many iconic skyscrapers, as well as other notable large-sized buildings. Some beautiful examples include the Beijing National Stadium (a.k.a. The Bird’s Nest), the Al Raha Race Track in Abu Dhabi (Fig. 1) and the Qunli Museum in Harbin, China (Fig. 2). Firms led by leading architects such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid are increasingly employing free-from surfaces in their designs.

Architecture and Human Identity – Artistic Sustainability Synopsis: The best measures for the environmental improvement of the city involve not only sustainability meant as balance between ecology and biological systems (however desirable at global scale), but we must also focus on the possibility in architecture to improve the research about artistic sustainability. Creativity is a specific capability of humans and the relationship between creativity and architecture is present right from the early stages of the design process regardless of the scale. Architecture and Human Identity – Artistic Sustainability Francesca Serri, Architect Prof. Paolo Bulletti, Architect, Paolo Bulletti Design Bureau Keywords: Collective Identity; Migrant Images, Human Birth Theory, Universal Exposition. Figure1. Nanjing Tulou - Fujian, China - October 2011. Contemporary China between the revival of the traditional collective identity and the search for the new in architecture. The quality of the relationship between human beings and architecture in Chinese cities and in the International context has become possible not only due to the dialogue between goods and traditions but also due to the exchange between the diversity found in the social transformation of its cities and acceptance of the urban city organism as it changes. The city can be thought of as a fusion of the cultural differences and multi-layered identities.

  • JES FAN Selected Press
JES FAN Selected Press Visible Woman, 2018 Courtesy of the artist and Empty Gallery, Hong Kong. Photo: Michael Yu Jes Fan sees his practice functioning as a language: materials and processes create meaning, colors and shapes act like grammar, and certain paradoxes are to be celebrated as metaphors. His work is often about finding the finest balance between beauty and the abject, collapsing the boundaries between subject and object, figuration and abstraction. We first met in his studio in Dumbo, New York, where he showed me what he was working on, and a few months later we caught up over the phone for this inter- view for Living Content. We talked about what American identity politics means for his practice, about the chauvinism of the art world, about books that have been an inspiration to him, and – in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic – about slowing down and learning to live better. Adriana Blidaru: You were born in Canada, moved to Hong Kong, and now you live in New York. Finding out this, made me curious about your trajectory: how and where did you find art along the way? Jes Fan: I grew up in Hong Kong but like a lot of folks from my generation from Hong Kong, I was born abroad. My parents emigrated to Canada before I was born because of the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro- tests. They were hoping to have a safer future, but my dad didn’t speak English so it was difficult for him to navigate sustaining a family there. He decided to move back to Hong Kong and my mother followed soon after.
