Simon Fraser University Library Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada update Spring 2010 Abstract Numerous anthropogenic stressors are known drivers of amphibian declines. Nonetheless, research has revealed few lessons for preventing declines in advance of their occurrence. This thesis presents a conceptual framework for identifying when spatial and temporal overlap of density-dependent bottlenecks, life-history traits, and stressors increase decline risk. I evaluated this framework using published empirical amphibian density-dependence data, and found that population dynamics and life-history theory could be useful in prioritizing vulnerability to stressors, though current data deficiencies limit evidence of correlations between these factors. In an experimental test with three frog species, I found that not all species share the same sensitivities to combined climate warming and habitat permanency scenarios. These results suggest larval life-history requirements can influence species’ responses to climate change. Integrating theoretical and empirical tests provides useful tools for estimating species vulnerability and helps identify gaps in our knowledge of the dynamics that govern amphibian responses to stressors. The aim of this study was to document the structural characteristics of nesting microsites, to describe the process of foam nest construction, and to explore the presence of male agonistic and chorus behaviour in Pleurodema tucumanum. Especially to the Northern coastal zone of Brazil, the knowledge about amphibian communities is very scarce. We have studied amphibian assemblages along the coastal strip zone of the state of Piauí for two years, covering a distance of ca. 70 km. It was possible to prepare a list of 21 anurans from 6 families (Microhylidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Cycloramphidae, Leiuperidae, and Bufonidae). All species are common and widely distributed in Brazilian territory, mainly on the Caatinga biome. The results are important to amplify the knowledge on the biodiversity found at the coastal zone of the state of Piauí. We provide a list of anurans from an open area of Caatinga stricto sensu, state of Ceará, Brazil. Fieldwork was conducted from July 2010 to July 2011 by sampling the reproductive sites. In total, 19 frog species were recorded, distributed in 13 genera and five families. The number of species found in our study represents 34.5% of the 55 anurans registered for the state of Ceará. The recorded anurofauna is widely distributed and is typical of open areas. One of the species found in our work is more associated with the Cerrado biome (D. rubincundulus). The group of species we recorded represents a subset of the species pool of the Caatinga. Our paper contributes to the knowledge of lowland Caatinga sites outside protected areas. Different vocalizations also contribute to partitioning of the acoustic space by sympatric species. This study aimed to describe the advertisement calls of anurans in a pond of the municipality of Floriano, State of Piauí, Brazil, and infer the acoustic niche partitioning of amphibians. Euclidean distance was used in a cluster analysis approach to infer the acoustic similarities among species. Thirteen species were analysed: Boana raniceps, Dendropsophus nanus, D. rubicundulus, D. minutus, Leptodactylus fuscus, L. troglodytes, L. vastus, Pithecopus nordestinus, Physalaemus cuvieri, P. nattereri, Pleurodema diplolister, Proceratophrys cristiceps and Scinax ruber. From these, six showed more than 90% of acoustic overlap: P. nattereri, P. cuvieri, L. fuscus and L. vastus (Leptodactylidae); and, D.

During the intervals of February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995, in the southern São Paulo state, we studied the breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964), the only known hylid species with oviposition in foam nests. The foam nests were constructed by female jumps, during the oviposition. The clutches contained 850-1250 eggs, which were almost black, except for the small clear vegetative pole. The construc- tion of foam nest in S. rizibilis is unique among the other species with this characteristic. The complexity of a foam nest is intermediate, and egg development was faster when eggs were surrounded by foam. It is possible to recognize a progression from less developed structures, represented by the bubble nests of some microhylid frogs, to more complex examples, such as the foam nests of Leptodactylidae or Leiuperidae.
