FIRST GRADE CLASSES

By Nasir Knuckles, Penguin Press Staff

This is my article about the 1st grade classes. I asked all of the 1st grade teachers questions about what they did so far this school year, how well-behaved their classes are, what are the cool things they have been doing in class, and which Special is the favorite of their students.

Here is what Mr. Sciecinski said… “We learned a lot academically, but also how to be a good person and to help others. Is the sky blue? Of course it is! My students are always well-behaved!!! My class is excited about our aquarium field trip, Field Day, and other end-of-the-year activities. We just made real terrariums, complete with pill bags and bottles. All my students like every Special! I like all Specials too!”

Here is what Mrs. Novotny said… “We learned about a lot of great things this year including clouds, the weather, adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, graphs, and Geometry. We also learned strategies to become better readers. Although we are all anxious to get out and enjoy the nice weather, we all are well-behaved in class. We will be visiting the aquarium this year which everyone is very excited about, including me. Favorite activities of my students are Centers, learning how to tell time, and of course, the aquarium trip! Favorite Specials depends on which student you ask. Every Special is great, but I think Math is the best subject!”

Here is what Mrs. Schlesing said… “We learned to become really good readers and writers this year in first grade. Spring fever is here, but I am happy to say that mainly the students are concentrating on making good choices and being well-behaved in class. Everyone is very excited about the trip to the Adventure Aquarium. Favorite class activities this year were learning a vowel dance, body spell, movement breaks, Centers, and Fun Friday, if we earned it. Gym is the favorite Special of my class, and Writing is the favorite academic subject of my students.”

Fantastic Fifth Grade By Lydia Dinsmore, Penguin Press Staff

I interviewed the 5th grade teachers for my article. The first question I asked was what are you planning to do after Spring Break? Two teachers said that they wanted to get back to work, but Ms. Green wants to continue to prepare her students for middle school. The next question was what subject do you like teaching the most? Surprisingly, they all love math! The third and final question I asked is there any fun activities you plan on doing at the end of the year? Two teachers talked about the wax museum. Mrs. McDougall talked about the safety picnic.

After I asked school related questions, I asked non-school related questions. I was surprised to find out that all three of the 5th grade teachers’ favorite color is blue. But their favorite after-school activities were very different. For instance, Mr. Gorniok likes to walk his dog. He thinks it’s a great exercise. Mrs. McDougall however, likes going to the gym. But Ms. Green likes watching her son, Philip, at karate or swimming. They all do different things during their free time, too. For example, Mr. Gorniok loves gardening. He says that growing your own food in the summer is fun and you can learn a lot and you always have healthy, tasty snacks. Mrs. McDougall on the other hand, likes to workout, play with her kids, eat Above: I need to give a shout out to Lainey out, do homework with her kids, and travel. right now-is going to sell it. He is going to give them 50% of all the profits even though the car is

worth over a million dollars! The car’s owner told

Mockingjay

By Sydney Parkinson, Penguin Press Staff I’ve heard that readers have enjoyed my last article on the book, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, so I’ve decided to write a second article on the next book, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, for you.

Katniss, Finnick, and Beete (played by Jennifer Lawrence, Sam Claflin, and Jeffery Write) have been transported to District 13 after the games, and Peeta and Johanna (played by Josh Hutcherson and Jena Malone) have gotten themselves captured by the Capitol soldiers. Katniss’s district has been destroyed by the Capitol sending fire bombs, so some of District 13 starts planning revenge to get back at the Capitol. Katniss is the symbol of the rebellion: the mockingjay. Katniss recieves a new bow and arrow from Bette which can shoot different types of arrows, like arrows that can catch on fire and bomb arrows. Johanna and Peeta are rescued, Katniss and Johanna bond from being roomates in a hospital, while Peeta has been brainwashed (his memory has been changed) and he thinks that Katniss is his enemy. Peeta does eventually start to get his memory back in some parts of both the book and movie. When Katniss and her friends arrive in the Capitol they find out that their group is wanted by the Capital authorities. They also have to keep Peeta in hand cuffs just in case he goes after Katniss again. There is even more exitement in Mockingjay if you read the story yourself! Mockingjay (the movie) part one will come out November 21, 2014.
