All clubs held their AGM’s, sorted out their canteens and play- ing gear, prepared flyers and chased sponsors.

This was followed by the school blitz; trial games and eventually pre-season knock-outs. Negotiations were done with Councils to secure grounds for the months ahead.

Regular monthly meetings were held with all club Directors as they were kept in touch with rule changes by our dedicated Operations Manager – Jennie Webster. Once again our partnership with the Balmain Referees Association was further strengthened – many thanks to Scott Todd. Strong representation from the Senior club also continued throughout the season.

Our season was capped off on Grand Final day where we witnessed some out- standing junior football from a variety of clubs. The event went off without a hitch thanks to Jennie Webster, Patron Mick Manning, all Directors and the large band of volunteers who continually step up to the mark.

Our aim is to continue growing our Junior League and improve our performance

Abdul was a key figure for Burwood-North Ryde with his punishing defence, strong running from dummy half and support play a feature of the club’s finals’ charge.

But the team crashed out of title reckoning following losses to Hurstville and St George Dragons in the big end-of-season matches.

“He is from the old school of hookers – a tough durable type that gives you 100 per cent commitment,” said Burwood-North Ryde mentor Aaron Zammit, who coached Mohamad in this year’s NSWRL Jim Beam Cup competition.

Due to a crippling injury toll, Burwood-North Ryde were forced to use 50 players during the campaign which included Abdul and several of his A Grade team mates.

Mohamed was called up to play in five Jim Beam Cup matches and made the most of his opportunity with strong performances in the number nine jumper.

It was a season to savour for 21 year old Abdul, who linked with Burwood-North Ryde after three seasons with Brighton Seagulls in the St George Junior League.

Balmain stalwart John Stapleton presented Abdul with his trophy at the Tigers’ Presentation Night at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club.

RANGY forward Daniel Sykes inspired Leichhardt Wanderers to a thrilling 16-12 premiership victory over a gallant Holy Cross in the Under 11 Div 1 showdown. The promising Sykes made a huge impact as Wanderers staged a second half revival to collect a third consecutive trophy under the coaching of club legend Craig Barnett. A revved up Holy Cross were on the brink of title success after jumping to a 12-0 lead after 23 minutes through two magnificent tries by classy centre Zane Camroux. With two minutes left on the clock, Sykes set up the match-winning try for prop Ngalu Ikani which was converted by centre Jonathan Whitehead. It was a cruel blow for Allan Jarvis’ well drilled Rhinos, who revelled in the big end-of- season fixtures. STRATHFIELD Raiders claimed the Charles ‘Chook’ Fraser Under 12 Div 2 Trophy after a gutsy 12-10 victory over Leichhardt Wanderers Black. Clever five eighth James Roumanous engineered the victory with an outstanding performance for the Raiders, who garnered the win from a never-say-die attitude. Trailing 10-0 at lemons, it was the capable Roumanous – the official Player of the Match - who inspired Strathfield with his leadership and skill. Wanderers opened the match in spectacular style with a fine solo try by elusive back Peter Lefao-Seu in the sixth minute, followed by a Ryan Gigg four pointer just three minutes later.

Both sides soaked up the pressure before the talented Roumanous put the Raiders on the board with a cracking try shortly after the interval which he duly converted. Strathfield seized the moment when Roumanous sparked an attacking raid in the 27th minute that enabled half back Nic Nordo to score in the corner. Nathan Saade’s conversion gave the Raiders a narrow two point lead – an advan- tage they protected with scrambling defence in a Mod League thriller.
