THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal. -

Fantasia the Famous Soundtracks of Walt Disney's Masterpieces Program
Fantasia The famous soundtracks of Walt Disney's masterpieces Sang Eun Kim soprano Luigi Giachino piano and transcriptions The Korean soprano Angela Kim with her wonderful voice and endearing presence on the stage meets the harmonies of the pianist Luigi Giachino, a great expert in film music, in a repertoire dedicated to the famous soundtracks of Walt Disney's masterpieces. The concert can be realized with the cinematographic projections made by Alba Film Festival. Since 1923 the Disney Studios have presented films that built the international history of cinema and animation, becoming immortal masterpieces as well, released from a mere function of entertainment and projected into a more “philosophical” dimension, to the point of rightfully becoming part of a worldwide popular culture. Despite the changes of time, aesthetics and lifestyles, Disney's lesson always remains current and reminds us that, despite the small and big difficulties of the life, we must continue to look forward, using the resources we have and finding solutions, never feeling lost and always listening to our emotions. The repertoire of this concert program embraces half a century of the Disney production and is a tribute to his unique style which also influenced the soundtracks. In the selected pieces, the atmospheres of poetry and dream are alternated with more playful and light-hearted moments, enhancing the versatility and great technical preparation of our artists. The concert can also be realized with the cinematic projections of the films, created by Alba Film -

Lebron James Worries About 2012 Olympics?
PRLog - Global Press Release Distribution LeBron James worries about 2012 Olympics? Lebron James may worry about the upcoming 2012 olmpics Aug. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- When the United States tips off Sunday in an exhibition against France at the Madison Square Garden, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh are little more than interested spectators, with the ability to compete in this summer, circumventing the national team. It is a decision that could swing for years, perhaps leaving the entire U.S. program on the sidelines at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Far-fetched? Maybe. But it is a horror scenario that looms. Click here to break sports news Text Alerts Only the winners of the 25th August-Sept. 8 World Championships in Turkey receives an automatic 2012 Olympic berth. So if this watered-down U.S. entry, one that the Miami Heat's Wade, James and Bosh, among others missing in one of his co-Round should stumble Games - mean in the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals or finals - it would that again next summer's Tournament of the Americas in Argentina, to qualify a route Prime U.S. stars certainly prefer to avoid. But next summer, the chances for success may even be further diluted, with Team USA not be completely consistent with the second stage of NBA stars, as is this year, but even with no NBA stars. In 1998, in the midst of an NBA lockout, USA Basketball had NBA talent to give the World Cup. The result, of a motley team of U.S. professionals overseas, minor leaguers and colleagues, was a bronze medal. -

The Fashion Industry As a Slippery Discursive Site: Tracing the Lines of Flight Between Problem and Intervention
THE FASHION INDUSTRY AS A SLIPPERY DISCURSIVE SITE: TRACING THE LINES OF FLIGHT BETWEEN PROBLEM AND INTERVENTION Nadia K. Dawisha A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Patricia Parker Sarah Dempsey Steve May Michael Palm Neringa Klumbyte © 2016 Nadia K. Dawisha ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Nadia K. Dawisha: The Fashion Industry as a Slippery Discursive Site: Tracing the Lines of Flight Between Problem and Intervention (Under the direction of Dr. Patricia Parker) At the intersection of the glamorous façade of designer runway shows, such as those in Paris, Milan and New York, and the cheap prices at the local Walmart and Target, is the complicated, somewhat insidious “business” of the fashion industry. It is complicated because it both exploits and empowers, sometimes through the very same practices; it is insidious because its most exploitative practices are often hidden, reproduced, and sustained through a consumer culture in which we are all in some ways complicit. Since fashion’s inception, people and institutions have employed a myriad of discursive strategies to ignore and even justify their complicity in exploitative labor, environmental degradation, and neo-colonial practices. This dissertation identifies and analyzes five predicaments of fashion while locating the multiple interventions that engage various discursive spaces in the fashion industry. Ultimately, the analysis of discursive strategies by creatives, workers, organizers, and bloggers reveals the existence of agile interventions that are as nuanced as the problem, and that can engage with disciplinary power in all these complicated places. -
Leighton Meester Hopes to Find True Love Someday
Leighton Meester Hopes to Find True Love Someday Leighton Meester has high hopes for true love. According to People, the Gossip Girl star is looking for the kind of relationship that her character on the show, Blair, shares with onscreen love, Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick). “Because the way they love each other is very real, and not for the sake of being dramatic,” says Meester. Though 24 and single, the accomplished actress is far from giving up. “It’s okay if you don’t find him and you’re 24. You can find it someday.” How do you know when you’ve found “real” love? Cupid’s Advice: Leighton Meester says, “Real love is not for the sake of being dramatic.” If you’re not sure whether you’re in love or not, Cupid has a few telling signs: 1. It goes deeper than looks: Make sure you enjoy talking to your partner just as much as you like looking at him. If you find yourself constantly fixated on your partner’s physical appearance, you make be confusing love with lust. 2. It’s not just physical: If your relationship is more physical than it is emotional, it’s probably not love. You should be getting to know your partner inside and out. When its’ time to say, “I do,” you should be looking forward to more than the honeymoon. 3. You make sacrafices: The biggest sign of love is putting your partner’s needs before your own. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, even if they’re small. If you’re always thinking what this person can do to help you instead of what you can do to help them, you’re probably not in love yet..
