  • 2012 Conference Abstracts (In Order of Presentation)
2012 Conference Abstracts (in order of presentation) Thursday afternoon Session 1a: Mapping Musical Modernities at the BBC (3rd Floor) Vaughan Williams, Boult and the BBC JENNY DOCTOR, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY Much scholarly discussion in recent years has focused on re-mapping notions of biography, exploring in music not only composers, performers and librettists, but also patrons, concert organizers and programme builders. In parallel with this emerged new ideas of institutional biography, opening up questions that contextualized the institution in terms of its cultural role. With such expanded impressions of biography, identity and contribution in mind, I explore Ralph Vaughan Williams and the BBC, considering the composer’s broadcasting activities and opportunities in relation to his Corporation contacts, in particular his interactions with BBC Music Director and Chief Conductor Adrian Boult. “The Best Possible Performance”: The BBC’s 1942 Music Policy and the Problem of Swung Classics CHRISTINA BAADE, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY This paper examines the BBC’s 1942 ban on swung classics, locating it at the nexus of three strands of British cultural expression during the Second World War: 1. the vogue for Russian (and Soviet) culture; 2. the expansion of American-style popular music in Britain; and 3. the development of People’s War discourses of democracy, populism, and tolerance. This paper argues that the ban represented a direct attempt to combat the commoditization of music and to develop a more musical citizenry. The BBC’s adoption of repressive means for democratic aims demonstrated the challenges of music broadcasting in modern mass culture. “The Machine Stops” and the Musical Acousmêtre LOUIS NIEBUR, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO In 1966, BBC Television broadcast an adaptation of E.M.

I just don't think it's very Dustyish, it seems a bit dour. I would have preferred something more glamorous, maybe in the same vein as the Girl Group Sounds hatbox set. Should I ever be able to afford it, I hope the contents make me feel better about it Top Re: Dusty Springfield box set (#p46419) by Cas19 » Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:31 pm I quite like the shape of the box, and the way its all so compact.

  • The Liverpool Packet
THE LIVERPOOL PACKET ]ANET E. MULLINS F the matters recorded concerning the town of Liverpool, none O compares either in point of vital interest in its time or in challenge to the imagination with that of privateering. Almost from the time of its settlement by the English this activity made its influence felt, slightly in earlier years, acutely from 1776 to 1815, in a diminishing degree since, ripples from the centre of agitation of the War of 1812 not yet having lost themselves on the shores of time. The word "privateering" suggests various things to various people; to some, a questionable mode of acquiring wealth; to others, a legalized method of harassing an enemy; to this one, piracy; to that, patriotism. The perspective afforded by time, contemporary history and newspaper files, especially those of the enemy, letters, diaries, log-books, all provide the means to de termine whether the Maritimes were justified or not in resorting to this mode of warfare. Privateers were owned, armed and equipped by private citizens and used as defenders of the coast, intelligence craft, commerce destroyers. The Liverpool privateersmen were of excellent stock, all leading citizens of their community, well and favorably known to British naval officers of the time. When the wars were over, many filled positions of honour as members of parliament, judges, ship-owners, merchants. The crews, mostly fishermen, were picked from volun teers, the success of a cruise depending on each man's ability in seamanship and his skill in the use of naval weapons. None were on wages. All fought on a share system.

Maybe bec ause record buyers didn't understand what she was doing? Maybe young Americans didn't know who she was (the title assumes they did)? Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.

Institute for Studies In American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York NEWSLETTER Volume XXXV, No. 1 Fall 2005 “White “The music I’ve been singing, so traditional, it was Woman” as new once. And I’ve been learning to make it mine. But Jazz Collector this! This music is mine in New already!”1 So gushes Miralee Smith, the white Orleans opera singing, jazz-smitten (1947) ingénue played by Dorothy Patrick in the 1947 film New by Orleans, set in 1917. Despite Sherrie Tucker having spent a good deal of the scene talking over the collective improvisation of Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, Zutty Singleton and other musicians, Miralee finds her attraction to “authentic New Orleans jazz” rising to a Dorothy Patrick, Arturo de Cordova, Louis Armstrong, Billie crescendo. Especially moved Holiday, and other musicians in New Orleans (1947) by the film’s theme song, “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans,” as sung by Endie, her black maid (played with palpable unhappiness by Billie Holiday in her only role in a feature motion picture), Miralee rises, eyes glowing, cheeks flushed; and declares, “I’m going to sing that New Orleans song!” For this act of white lady impropriety, Miralee is bounced from the Basin Street club. Such a rebuff would crush many a die-hard jazz fan, but not Miralee, whose desire now burns hotter than Buddy Bolden’s trumpet calling the children back home. This music is hers! She simply must feel the song of her black maid moving Inside through her own white lady body, as indeed, she will, before this musical romance is over.

I've just been into my loc al branc h and there where quite a few for sale. They were in a central position and marked with a big star as Book of the Week!
