A Phylogeny of the Neotropical Nectar-Feeding Bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) Based on Morphological and Molecular Data
Journal of Mammalian Evolution, Vol. 9, No. 1/ 2, June 2002 ( 2002) A Phylogeny of the Neotropical Nectar-Feeding Bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) Based on Morphological and Molecular Data Bryan C. Carstens,1,3 Barbara L. Lundrigan,1 and Philip Myers,2 We present a phylogeny of 35 species of nectar-feeding bats based on 119 morphological characters: 62 from the skin, skull, and dentition and 57 soft tissue characters (the latter from Wetterer et al., 2000). These data support monophyly of the subfamilies Brachyphyllinae, Phyllonycterinae, and Glossophaginae, and the tribes Glossophagini and Lonchophyllini. Our analysis contradicts the phylogeny estimated from the RAG-2 gene, which does not support a monophyletic Glossophaginae (Baker et al., 2000). Parsimony analysis of a combined matrix, containing morphological characters and RAG-2 sequences, results in a phylogeny that includes Brachyphyllinae and Phyllonycterinae in Glossophaginae. Support for most clades is stronger than in the morphological tree, but support for basal nodes of the phylogeny remains weak. The weak support at these basal nodes underscores the historical disagreements regarding relationships among these taxa; combining morphological and molecular data has not improved support for these nodes. Uncertainty regarding basal relationships complicates description of morphological change during the evolution of nectarivory in the Phyllostomidae. INTRODUCTION The taxonomic history of the nectar-feeding phyllostomid bats has been dominated by questions pertaining to the relationships among three major groups (Table I), the Caribbean subfamilies Brachyphyllinae and Phyllonycterinae and the more broadly dis- tributed Glossophaginae. There has been little consensus regarding relationships among these groups. -

ISSBAT. Université de Tunis–El-Manar. Tunisia. ABSTRACT It was thought in Tunisia that the seeds whose vernacular name in Arabic is “El-Habba Al-Sawdaa” or “Habbat Al Baraka” belong to Nigella genus. While sequence analysis of the nuclear ITS1, 5,8S and ITS2 rDNA gene showed that these seeds were identified, affirmatively, such as Chamaecrista absus var. absus [GenBank accession number: KC817015]. The seeds of Chamaecrista absus contained 2,28% of oil. Fatty acid composition showed that linoleic, palmitic, oleic and linolenic acids account for more than 94% of the total fatty acids. We found that β-sitosterol represented the main component of the phytosterols (63,23 %), followed by campesterol and stigmasterol. Cycloartenol, amyrine and 24 methylen-cycloartenol were the major components constituting about 76,85 % of total triterpene alcohols. The fractions of sterols and triterpene alcohols showed antibacterial activities against many strains with major activity against Listeria ivanovii and Bacillus subtilis. -

TAXONOMY: Class Mammalia; Subclass Theria; Infraclass Metatheria; Order Chiroptera; Suborder Microchiroptera; Superfamily Noctilionoidea; Family Phyllostomidae, Subfamily Glossophaginae, Tribe Glossophagini (López-Gonzalez 2005, Myers et al 2006, Oprea et al 2009). There are eight species in this genus, one of which occurs in Paraguay but the validity of some of these species has been called into question, some previously described species have later been synonymised (Nagorsen & Tamsitt 1981) and a review of the group is required (Jarrin & Kunz 2008). Carstens et al (2002) provided a phylogeny of the Glossophaginae based on morphological characteristics. They considered Anoura to belong to the "choeronycterine" group of the Glossophagini along with Choeronycteris, Choeroniscus, Hylonycteris, Lichonycteris, Musonycteris and Scleronycteris ). The generic name Anoura is means “without a tail” (Palmer 1904). The species name caudifer is Latin meaning “tailed” in reference to the presence of a tail in this species in what has been misleadingly considered to be a diagnostic characteristic in a purportedly tailless group. According to ICZN rules if the author fails to indicate whether a name is an adjective or substantive, the name should be treated as a noun in apposition and the original spelling stands, in this case being caudifer . -

BIOSYSTEMATICS OF THE NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN SPECIES OF GIBBOBRUCHUS (COLEOPTERA: BRUCHIDAE: BRUCHINAE) BY DONALD R. WIUTEHEAD 1 AND JOHN M. KINGSOLVER 2 INTRODUCTION In a previous paper (Kingsolver and Whitehead 1974) we dis cussed the biosystematics of Caryedes, one of a series of closely related New World tropical seed beetle genera whose larvae feed on seeds of leguminous plants. We now proceed to a related genus, Gibbobruchus, to supply data needed in ecological studies by D. H. Janzen and in systematic studies of the caesalpiniaceous genus Bauhinia by R. P. Wunderlin. In the New World, the genus Bauhinia includes all known host species for all but one species of Gibbobruchus, and for members of the stenocephalus Group of Caryedes, but for no other bruchids. The only other known host genus for Gibbobruchus is Cercis, which is attacked by G. mimus in temperate North America. We distinguish six species groups within Gibbobruchus. Four groups are South American, though one is represented in Panama by one species. Our taxonomie treatment for the South American groups includes a diagnosis of each group and notes on included species. Our treatment of the two Middle American groups, which form a convenient biogeographie unit, is more detailed. One group is monobasic, while the other includes :five known species. The latter group in eludes one N earctic species, whose principal host is Cercis rather than Bauhinia, and another species which extends from Middle America to the West Indies and into northwestern South America. Our respective contributions to the study are as in our Caryedes paper, except that the non-genital drawings were prepared by K. -

Azevedo Tozzi2 RESUMO Este trabalho fornece chave para identificação, sinonímia, descrição, distribuição geográfica e habitat, comentários sobre taxonomia para 35 espécies e 4 variedades de Bauhinia sect. Pauletia ser. Cansenia, nativas no Brasil. Além disso, o capítulo introdutório oferece um estudo preliminar dos caracteres morfológicos e relação inter-específica dos táxons estudados. O tratamento taxonômico é baseado em mais de 1.200 coleções e também em várias duplicatas destas coleções depositadas em mais de 60 herbários. Os caracteres taxonômicos também foram observados em árvores de 3 espécies cultivadas no Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. Observações de campo foram feitas nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Goiás e no Distrito Federal. Duas novas ocorrências − B. cinnamomea e B. conwayi − são relatadas para o Brasil. Três novas combinações para as variedades de B. ungulata são propostas. Vinte e nove sinônimos taxonômicos (heterotípicos) são aceitos, destes, 25 são apresentados pela primeira vez. A distribuição dos táxons de Bauhinia ser. Cansenia no Brasil foi assinalada em 9 mapas. Dezenove pranchas ilustrativas são apresentadas.
