RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar o estudo fitoquímico e biológico do extrato etanólico, frações e compostos isolados provenientes das folhas de Bauhinia ungulata L. (Fabaceae). As folhas secas foram submetidas aos ensaios farmacopeicos de determinação de água e cinzas totais. Extrato aquoso e etanólico foram submetidos a análise fitoquímica preliminar. O extrato etanólico foi particionado obtendo-se as frações hexano, clorofórmio, acetato de etila e residual. A fração acetato de etila foi submetida à cromatografia em coluna e cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência e compostos isolados foram identificados por ressonância magnética nuclear. O extrato etanólico e frações foram submetidos aos ensaios de toxicidade frente a Artemia salina ; atividade hemolítica; doseamento de fenóis totais pelo método de Folin Ciocalteou; às atividades antioxidantes pelos métodos de fosfomolibdênio, DPPH e TBARS; alelopática determinado interferência das amostras sobre germinação, crescimento, conteúdo de clorofila e respiração, utilizando com espécies alvo a Lactuca sativa e Alium cepa e antibacteriana por meio de concentração inibitória mínima. O extrato etanólico foi submetido a ensaios farmacológicos de nocicepção induzida pela formalina, contorções abdominais induzidas por ácido acético, teste da placa quente, edema de pata induzido por carragenina, medida da atividade enzimática da mieloperoxidase e análise histológica e campo aberto em modelos in vivo . Os compostos isolados foram submetidos aos ensaios imunológicos utilizando neutrófilos humanos e de citotoxicidade por redução do MTT frente a linhagem celular SiHa de câncer de cólo de útero. Os resultados das análises farmacopeicas demostraram que o material utilizado no estudo encontra-se dentro dos parâmetros estabelecidos. Na análise fitoquímica preliminar foram detectados alguns grupamentos que serviram de guias para o isolamento principalmente de flavonoides. Da fração acetato de etila foram isolados os compostos astilbina, quercetina, engeletina, afzelina e canferol. Nos ensaios biológicos não foram observadas toxicidade sobre a Artemia salina e hemolítica nos modelos testados. Com relação ao teor de fenóis totais todas as amostras possuem estes compostos em sua constituição com destaque para FAE que apresentou teores elevados. Com relação a atividade antioxidante no ensaio do fosfomolibdênio, DPPH e TBARS destacou-se a FAE com resultados semelhantes aos padrões utilizados. No ensaio alelopático as amostras demostraram potencial fitotóxico variáveis nas duas espécies utilizadas como alvo influenciando os parâmetros avaliados. Não foi observada atividade antibacteriana das amostras frente as bactérias testadas. O extrato etanólico apresentou atividade antinociceptiva e anti-inflamatória frente aos modelos utilizados. Os isolados quercetina, engeletina e canferol monstraram-se ativadores de neutrófilos. Os compostos isolados não apresentaram citotoxicidade frente as células da linhagem SiHA nas concentrações utilizadas. Os resultados revelam atividade antioxidante, alelopática, antinociceptiva, anti-inflamatória do extrato e imunossupressora de compostos das folhas de Bauhinia ungulata . ABSTRACT This work aimed to carry out the phytochemical and biological studies of the extract ethanolic, fractions and isolated compounds from the leaves of Bauhinia ungulata L. (Fabaceae ). The dried leaves were subjected to pharmacopoeial tests to determine water and ashes. Aqueous and ethanolic extract were subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis. The ethanol extract was partitioned obtaining the fractions hexane, chloroform , ethyl acetate and the remaining residual. The ethyl acetate fraction was subjected to column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography and isolated compounds identified by nuclear magnetic resonance. The ethanolic extract and fractions were subjected to testing for toxicity against Artemia salina ; hemolytic activity; determination of total phenols by Folin Ciocalteou, the antioxidant activities by methods phosphomolybdenum, DPPH and TBARS; allelopathic interference of samples given on germination, growth, chlorophyll content and respiration using to target the species Lactuca sativa and Allium cepa and antibacterial by minimum inhibitory concentration. The ethanol extract was subjected to pharmacological testing of nociception formalin-induced and writhing induced by acetic acid, hot plate test, paw edema induced by carrageenan, measure the enzymatic activity of myeloperoxidase, histological analysis and open field in models in vivo. The isolated compounds were tested for immunological assays using human neutrophils and cytotoxicity by MTT reduction compared to SiHa cell line of cervical cancer. The results for pharmacopoeial analysis showed that the material used in the study are within established parameters. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of some groups that served as guides for the isolation of mainly flavonoides were detected. The ethyl acetate fraction were isolated astilbin, quercetin, engeletin, afzelin and kaempferol. In biological tests on the Artemia salina and hemolytic activity models the samples showed no activity. With respect to total phenols all

Carstens,1,3 Barbara L. Lundrigan,1 and Philip Myers,2 We present a phylogeny of 35 species of nectar-feeding bats based on 119 morphological characters: 62 from the skin, skull, and dentition and 57 soft tissue characters (the latter from Wetterer et al., 2000). These data support monophyly of the subfamilies Brachyphyllinae, Phyllonycterinae, and Glossophaginae, and the tribes Glossophagini and Lonchophyllini. Our analysis contradicts the phylogeny estimated from the RAG-2 gene, which does not support a monophyletic Glossophaginae (Baker et al., 2000). Parsimony analysis of a combined matrix, containing morphological characters and RAG-2 sequences, results in a phylogeny that includes Brachyphyllinae and Phyllonycterinae in Glossophaginae. Support for most clades is stronger than in the morphological tree, but support for basal nodes of the phylogeny remains weak. The weak support at these basal nodes underscores the historical disagreements regarding relationships among these taxa; combining morphological and molecular data has not improved support for these nodes. Uncertainty regarding basal relationships complicates description of morphological change during the evolution of nectarivory in the Phyllostomidae. Biotechnology (UK) March 2018 Department of Genetics and Genome Biology I Genetic analysis of the DAZ1 transcription factor in Arabidopsis thaliana by Jaypalsinhji Darbar Abstract The aim of this research was to advance understanding of the molecular and genetic mechanisms by which the transcription factor, DAZ1 (DUO1-ACTIVATED ZINC FINGER 1) supports male germline development in Arabidopsis thaliana. The main approach was to analyse the importance of different protein domains in DAZ1 for generative cell division and pollen fertility. The DAZ1 basic region (BR), the DAZ1 conserved region (CR) and the role of individual zinc finger (ZnF) motifs were investigated. In planta complementation of mutant Arabidopsis daz1-/- daz2+/- plants with deletion and substitution variants of DAZ1 revealed important functional roles for the BR, CR and for ZnF3 in male germline development. DAZ1 variants with BR or CR mutations showed a significant but limited ability to rescue male germ cell division and transmission of daz1 daz2 pollen. A second objective was to study the cause of unexpected seed abortion observed in daz1-/- daz2-/- mutants that express DAZ1 variants with reduced function. Observations revealed ovule enlargement without development of embryo or endosperm tissues indicating early post-fertilisation defects arising from defective gametes. In a third objective, a genetic screen was conducted in Arabidopsis for suppressors of reduced fertility in chemically mutagenised plants expressing a C-terminally truncated DAZ1. Several suppressor lines were identified which were stably maintained through multiple generations.

ISSBAT. Université de Tunis–El-Manar. Tunisia. ABSTRACT It was thought in Tunisia that the seeds whose vernacular name in Arabic is “El-Habba Al-Sawdaa” or “Habbat Al Baraka” belong to Nigella genus. While sequence analysis of the nuclear ITS1, 5,8S and ITS2 rDNA gene showed that these seeds were identified, affirmatively, such as Chamaecrista absus var. absus [GenBank accession number: KC817015]. The seeds of Chamaecrista absus contained 2,28% of oil. Fatty acid composition showed that linoleic, palmitic, oleic and linolenic acids account for more than 94% of the total fatty acids. We found that β-sitosterol represented the main component of the phytosterols (63,23 %), followed by campesterol and stigmasterol. Cycloartenol, amyrine and 24 methylen-cycloartenol were the major components constituting about 76,85 % of total triterpene alcohols. The fractions of sterols and triterpene alcohols showed antibacterial activities against many strains with major activity against Listeria ivanovii and Bacillus subtilis.

TAXONOMY: Class Mammalia; Subclass Theria; Infraclass Metatheria; Order Chiroptera; Suborder Microchiroptera; Superfamily Noctilionoidea; Family Phyllostomidae, Subfamily Glossophaginae, Tribe Glossophagini (López-Gonzalez 2005, Myers et al 2006, Oprea et al 2009). There are eight species in this genus, one of which occurs in Paraguay but the validity of some of these species has been called into question, some previously described species have later been synonymised (Nagorsen & Tamsitt 1981) and a review of the group is required (Jarrin & Kunz 2008). Carstens et al (2002) provided a phylogeny of the Glossophaginae based on morphological characteristics. They considered Anoura to belong to the "choeronycterine" group of the Glossophagini along with Choeronycteris, Choeroniscus, Hylonycteris, Lichonycteris, Musonycteris and Scleronycteris ). The generic name Anoura is means “without a tail” (Palmer 1904). The species name caudifer is Latin meaning “tailed” in reference to the presence of a tail in this species in what has been misleadingly considered to be a diagnostic characteristic in a purportedly tailless group.     BIOSYSTEMATICS OF THE NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN SPECIES OF GIBBOBRUCHUS (COLEOPTERA: BRUCHIDAE: BRUCHINAE) BY DONALD R. WIUTEHEAD 1 AND JOHN M. KINGSOLVER 2 INTRODUCTION In a previous paper (Kingsolver and Whitehead 1974) we dis­ cussed the biosystematics of Caryedes, one of a series of closely related New World tropical seed beetle genera whose larvae feed on seeds of leguminous plants. We now proceed to a related genus, Gibbobruchus, to supply data needed in ecological studies by D. H. Janzen and in systematic studies of the caesalpiniaceous genus Bauhinia by R. P. Wunderlin. In the New World, the genus Bauhinia includes all known host species for all but one species of Gibbobruchus, and for members of the stenocephalus Group of Caryedes, but for no other bruchids. The only other known host genus for Gibbobruchus is Cercis, which is attacked by G. mimus in temperate North America. We distinguish six species groups within Gibbobruchus. Four groups are South American, though one is represented in Panama by one species. Our taxonomie treatment for the South American groups includes a diagnosis of each group and notes on included species. Our treatment of the two Middle American groups, which form a convenient biogeographie unit, is more detailed. One group is monobasic, while the other includes :five known species. The latter group in eludes one N earctic species, whose principal host is Cercis rather than Bauhinia, and another species which extends from Middle America to the West Indies and into northwestern South America.     Bauhinia ser. Cansenia (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) no Brasil Angela Maria Studart da Fonseca Vaz1 A. M. G. Azevedo Tozzi2 RESUMO Este trabalho fornece chave para identificação, sinonímia, descrição, distribuição geográfica e habitat, comentários sobre taxonomia para 35 espécies e 4 variedades de Bauhinia sect. Pauletia ser. Cansenia, nativas no Brasil. Além disso, o capítulo introdutório oferece um estudo preliminar dos caracteres morfológicos e relação inter-específica dos táxons estudados. O tratamento taxonômico é baseado em mais de 1.200 coleções e também em várias duplicatas destas coleções depositadas em mais de 60 herbários. Os caracteres taxonômicos também foram observados em árvores de 3 espécies cultivadas no Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. Observações de campo foram feitas nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Goiás e no Distrito Federal. Duas novas ocorrências − B. cinnamomea e B. conwayi − são relatadas para o Brasil. Três novas combinações para as variedades de B. ungulata são propostas. Vinte e nove sinônimos taxonômicos (heterotípicos) são aceitos, destes, 25 são apresentados pela primeira vez. A distribuição dos táxons de Bauhinia ser. Cansenia no Brasil foi assinalada em 9 mapas. Dezenove pranchas ilustrativas são apresentadas. The taxonomic treatment presented is based on more than 1200 herbarium collections and several duplicates (sheets) of most of these collections of more than 60 herbaria.

Glossophaga soricina (Pallas, 1766), Anoura caudifer (É. Geoffroy, 1818), and Phyllostomus discolor (Wagner, 1843) were frequently observed, videotaped, and mist-netted visiting banana inflorescences. Three approaching strategies on banana inflorescences were performed by bats: hovering (glossophagine species), upside landing (G. soricina), and downside landing (P. discolor). A new feeding behavior that consisted in hovering and licking the nectar that dripped from the distal part of a closed bract was observed for glossophagines.

(Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) em cerrado no Centro-Oeste brasileiro ROBERTO LOBO MUNIN1,2, REINALDO CHAVES TEIXEIRA1 e MARIA ROSÂNGELA SIGRIST1 (recebido: 10 de agosto de 2006; aceito: 18 de outubro de 2007) ABSTRACT – (Sphingophily and breeding system in Bauhinia curvula Benth. (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) in “cerrado” of Central Brazil). The reproductive biology of Bauhinia curvula was studied in a “cerrado” fragment in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Bauhinia curvula is a shrub that blooms during six to seven months (July to November/December) and has a subterranean stem whith regeneration function. The flowers are white, hermaphrodite, zigomorphic, with nocturnal anthesis, they exhale unpleasant odor, and last about 11 hours. The stigma is wide and located above and/or in front of the anthers that presents pollen with 98.5% of viability. Nectar is produced in the hipanthium, with 26 µL medium volume and solute concentration around of 15%. Although flowers of B. curvula have several characteristics related to both chiropterophilous and sphingophilous syndromes, the small nectar volume and the narrow nectariferous chamber entrance seems to discourage bats visits. Bauhinia curvula is self-incompatible and depends on pollinators, therefore it did not bear fruit after spontaneous self-pollination. The studied population presented reduced reproductive effectiveness (0.07), probably due to pollen limitation. Agrius cingulatus (Sphingidae) was the only flower visitor which presents visiting behaviour, body size and proboscis length appropriated to effective pollination. This fact aid in a medium to long way the autogamic genotipe selection.
