Bauhinia tomentosa and Bauhinia racemosa also possess anti-diabetic, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-obesity and antihyperlipidemic activities. Therefore, the correct identification of these plants is critically important. The aim was to investigate the comparative morpho-micrometric analysis of 3 species of Bauhinia belonging to the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) by using conventional as well as scanning electron microscopy to support species identification. In B. racemosa, epidermal cells are polygonal with anticlinical walls; whereas wavy walled cells are found in B. tomentosa and B. vahlii. Anisocytic stomata are present in B. racemosa, while B. tomentosa shows the presence of paracytic stomata and anomocytic stomata in B. vahlii. Stomatal numbers and stomatal indices were found to be more in B. vahlii than B. tomentosa and B. racemosa. On the other hand, uniseriate, unicellular covering trichomes are found in B. racemosa and B. tomentosa but B. vahlii contains only uniseriate, multicellular covering trichomes. Based on these micromorphological features, a diagnostic key was developed for identification of the particular species which helps a lot in pharmaceutical botany, taxonomy and horticulture, in terms of species identification. -

For much of the last thirty years, the caesalpinioid genus Bauhinia has been recognised by numerous authors as a broadly circumscribed, ecologically, morphologically and palynologically diverse pantropical taxon, comprising several subgenera. One of these, Bauhinia subg. Phanera has recently been reinstated at generic rank based on a synthesis of morphological and molecular data. Nevertheless, there remains considerable diversity within Phanera. Following a review of palynological and molecular studies of Phanera in conjunction with a careful re-examination of the morphological heterogeneity within the genus, we have found strong evidence that the species of Phanera subsect. Corymbosae are a natural group that warrant generic status. We describe here the genus Cheniella R.Clark & Mackinder gen. nov. to accommodate them. It comprises 10 species and 3 subspecies, one newly described here. Generic characters include leaves that are simple and emarginate or bilobed; fl owers with elongate hypanthia which are as long as or much longer than the sepals; pods that are glabrous, compressed, oblong, indehiscent or tardily dehiscent; and with numerous seeds, the seeds bearing an unusually long funicle extending most of the way around their circumference. -

One of those genera, Schnella, includes all neotropical liana species with tendrils. This study comprises a summary of the taxonomic and nomenclatural history of Schnella, and presents a list of names accepted under Schnella, including 12 new combinations. We recognise here a total of 53 taxa including 47 species. Distribution details for each taxon are given, illustrated with a map showing numbers of taxa within the TDWG regions of the neotropics. Within Schnella, there exist two morphologically and palynologically distinguishable groups of species. Further work, including a molecular- based study, will be needed to discover whether those two species groups are congeneric. Key Words: Fabaceae, Bauhinia, Phanera, lianas Context of the tribe Cercideae The family Leguminosae consists of c. 19, 500 species (LPWG 2013a), in c. 750 genera, of which a few species provide some of the world’s most important cash crops, such as Arachis hypogaea Linnaeus (1753: 741) (peanut), Cicer arietinum Linnaeus (1753: 738) (chickpea), Glycine max Merrill (1917: 274) (soya bean) and Medicago sativa Linnaeus (1753: 778) (alfalfa). -

Lundrigan,1 and Philip Myers,2 We present a phylogeny of 35 species of nectar-feeding bats based on 119 morphological characters: 62 from the skin, skull, and dentition and 57 soft tissue characters (the latter from Wetterer et al., 2000). These data support monophyly of the subfamilies Brachyphyllinae, Phyllonycterinae, and Glossophaginae, and the tribes Glossophagini and Lonchophyllini. Our analysis contradicts the phylogeny estimated from the RAG-2 gene, which does not support a monophyletic Glossophaginae (Baker et al., 2000). Parsimony analysis of a combined matrix, containing morphological characters and RAG-2 sequences, results in a phylogeny that includes Brachyphyllinae and Phyllonycterinae in Glossophaginae. Support for most clades is stronger than in the morphological tree, but support for basal nodes of the phylogeny remains weak. The weak support at these basal nodes underscores the historical disagreements regarding relationships among these taxa; combining morphological and molecular data has not improved support for these nodes. Uncertainty regarding basal relationships complicates description of morphological change during the evolution of nectarivory in the Phyllostomidae. INTRODUCTION The taxonomic history of the nectar-feeding phyllostomid bats has been dominated by questions pertaining to the relationships among three major groups (Table I), the Caribbean subfamilies Brachyphyllinae and Phyllonycterinae and the more broadly dis- tributed Glossophaginae. There has been little consensus regarding relationships among these groups. -

Abstract. The efflux of K+ from the pulvinar cells of Mimosa pudica was shown to inerease substantially during the seismonastic reaction. This result is shown to indicate a decrease in a (reflection coefiicient) of pulvinar cell membrane for potassium salts which could account for the pulvinar cell turgor decrease during the seismonastic reaction. Membrane potentials and concentrations of Ca2+, K+, Cl-, S, and P were measured in the top and bottom halves of pulvini. Pulvinar cells showed a large negative membrane potential, cell vacuole r:lative to external solution, but no significant difference in membrane potential could be detected between upper and lower pulvinar cells. A large difference in K+ and Cl- concentration betwe-n top and bottom pulvinar halves was evident in reactive pulvini but not in unreactive pulvini. The effect of K+ concentration on plant growth and leaf reactivity was also investigated. One of the most fascinating phenomena in the RTAC. Biotechnology (UK) March 2018 Department of Genetics and Genome Biology I Genetic analysis of the DAZ1 transcription factor in Arabidopsis thaliana by Jaypalsinhji Darbar Abstract The aim of this research was to advance understanding of the molecular and genetic mechanisms by which the transcription factor, DAZ1 (DUO1-ACTIVATED ZINC FINGER 1) supports male germline development in Arabidopsis thaliana. The main approach was to analyse the importance of different protein domains in DAZ1 for generative cell division and pollen fertility. The DAZ1 basic region (BR), the DAZ1 conserved region (CR) and the role of individual zinc finger (ZnF) motifs were investigated. In planta complementation of mutant Arabidopsis daz1-/- daz2+/- plants with deletion and substitution variants of DAZ1 revealed important functional roles for the BR, CR and for ZnF3 in male germline development. DAZ1 variants with BR or CR mutations showed a significant but limited ability to rescue male germ cell division and transmission of daz1 daz2 pollen. A second objective was to study the cause of unexpected seed abortion observed in daz1-/- daz2-/- mutants that express DAZ1 variants with reduced function. Observations revealed ovule enlargement without development of embryo or endosperm tissues indicating early post-fertilisation defects arising from defective gametes. In a third objective, a genetic screen was conducted in Arabidopsis for suppressors of reduced fertility in chemically mutagenised plants expressing a C-terminally truncated DAZ1. Several suppressor lines were identified which were stably maintained through multiple generations.
