  • They Did It! Dan Gurney and Brock Yates in a 172 Mph Ferrari Race a Wild Assortment of Challengers Across Country
hose damn fools, they went and did it. Shortly after midnight on the 15th of November, 1971, six outlandish vehicles, manned by 16 even more outlandish drivers, co-drivers, navigators, me- chanics—and a TWA stewardess, for God's sake—scattered out of the Red Ball Garage on East 31st Street in New York City and headed west. A few hours passed and two more entrants joined the chase—a coast-to-coast epic that will be remembered as the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. Eight vehicles in all, 23 lunatics. Less than a day-and-a-half later (six minutes less to be pre- cise), the first car, a mud-streaked Ferrari Daytona, yowled into the parking lot of the Portofino Inn in the marina of Re- dondo Beach, California, 2863 miles from New York. In the next three hours, four more machines had checked in, and the exhausted, red-eyed competitors were lounging around, breathing the gentle Pacific air, stretching their cramped, grubby bodies in the warm sun and exchanging tales of their adventures. Twenty-four more hours passed before the last competitor, a pachydermatous Travco Motor Home with a shrieking police motorcycle escort, rolled sedately over the finish line. It was over. The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Me- morial Trophy Dash had entered the annals of sporting minuti- ae, leaving future generations to decide what it meant, if any- thing. To those involved, it had been an adventure, encompass- ing difficult endurance driving, nasty weather, brushes with the law—some of the latter bordering on the absurd—naviga- tional challenges and a variety of mechanical troubles.

Abstract: Daniel Matamala In this thesis for his Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University, Chilean journalist Daniel Matamala explores the relationship between sports and politics, looking at what voters' favorite sports can tell us about their political leanings and how "POWER GAMES: How this can be and is used to great eect in election campaigns. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC).

Studying the history of technology often requires technical expertise beyond that available in the classroom. During my experience as a racing mechanic and fabricator I was fortunate to have many very capable teachers who willingly shared their expertise. Among these are my Robert Wagner, Smokey Yunick, Chris Brown, Amos Johnson, Thomas Blam and Franz Blam.

Vol 32No 07 July 2015 The Cannonball What ??? By Diane Lambert Match the team with their ride: JJ McClure/Captain Chaos Ferrari 308 GTS Jamie Blake/Morris Fenderbaum Aston Martin DB5 Jill Rivers/Marcie Thatcher Subaru GL 4WD Jackie Chan/Michael Hui Lamborghini Countach Seymour Goldfarb, Jr. Dodge Tradesman Ambulance Think back to where you were and what you were driving (if you were driving) in 1981. Ah Ha ... the smiles are starting to take shape, the memories are resurfacing, the fun that you had in your fave car are now at the forefront, and you're ready to ride! Sorry, got a little carried away. Anyway ... Once again Jack and I had a blast going to the "Drive- In" at the Coleman Garage a/k/a The Lemke Brit Car Haven on June 13th. As we like to do, folks arrived, chose a choice viewing spot inside then meandered chatting and enjoying the camaraderie and the overall ambience. Dennis Wunsch was the grill master for the evening, and there was an abundance of delicious dishes to fill us up. And then, of course, what's a drive-in movie with candy and popcorn? There were bags of popcorn and lots of movie candy being passed around and ice cold refreshments in the cooler! What more could anyone want??? In typical fashion, the movie for the evening was not revealed until show time. For those who ei- ther have not been to this event (hard to believe!), one of the requirements is that the movie should be a comedy, contain elements of disbelief, a bit of playful deceit, race car drivers and babes, and of course, great cars and road races! Getting the picture? The Cannonball Run is a 1981 comedy starring lots of well knows actors such as Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise, and Farrah Fawcett to name a few.

  • Press Release Cannonball Documentary
Press Release December 16, 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE There was a real Cannonball Run? Documentary about the legendary outlaw LA to NY dash in production, seeks help from 1970s fans that were there Mention The Cannonball Run, and most will come up with something they love remembering about it. “Burt Reynolds beat everyone in his Bandit Trans Am.” “No, he was driving a fake ambulance smuggling beer!” “Two girls in a black Lamborghini won!” “Wasn’t it white – or red?” “Some rich guys still run it.” None of the above is true – many recall snippets of fiction from going to the movies, renting a VHS or watching TV. But as with all really great legends, there lies a truth behind… The real Cannonball run was the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, an illegal road race from coast to coast organized by motor journalist Brock Yates, as protest and proof Interstate speed limits were too low. In irregular intervals from 1971 to 1979 he invited a select cabal of contestants, running everything from Ferraris to pickup trucks. Being an unsanctioned event veiled in secrecy, few were there to witness it, and even fewer remember today that it really happened… Recently an original Cannonballer’s large stash of photography and reports from the real 1970s race was rediscovered in Germany. The Yates family got involved, and now a feature documentary is being filmed. The documentary filmmakers are asking all of you: Who was at the - Cannonball Start (Red Ball Garage, Manhattan, NY or Lock, Stock & Barrel, Darien, CT), - Cannonball Finish (Portofino Inn, Redondo Beach, CA), - Parade lap (US Grand Prix West, West Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach, CA) - or anywhere in between and has pictures, audio, film footage, home video tape, or just remembers the events? In the old photos there are several pros and amateurs holding cassette recorders, Super 8 film cameras and even early video camcorders.
