Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan

The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made available. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair of the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fast back from 1964 ½ to the new 2005 GT or the 2007 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome.

Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business ACCELERATOR – MOCSEM Newsletter PAGE 1

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Sometimes I don't get the inspiration to write a president's message on a single topic, so I decided to take the "blog" approach this month. I will try to keep my thoughts coherent.

• We failed to mention last month that the amended MOCSEM By-laws included in the March newsletter were unanimously approved. Thank you for voting. • April was the first club meeting this year at Mama Mia's where we were only able to use half of the banquet room. This can happen any month where another party wants to book the other side of the room, but there usually is not much demand for a room on Tuesday night. We have worked out an agreement with the restaurant that will free up additional seating space when we only have the half room. • Meeting attendance has been strong and many members are also enjoying the pizza buffet. In order to be considerate of the restaurant, we need to ask that members who wish to eat please arrive no later than 7:00PM so the restaurant can stop replenishing the buffet at 7:15PM. The buffet will open at 6:15PM. Also, the drink pitchers at the bar are for members who have paid for the buffet. If you only want a drink instead of the buffet, you can purchase a drink from a waitress or purchase a glass from Doreen Davis that can be used with the drink pitchers at the bar. • It's nice to see members taking advantage of the nice weather and the large parking lot to bring their Mustangs to the club meeting. It makes for interesting conversations before and after the meeting. • The most effective way to recruit new members to the club is for current members to approach friends that also own or are interested in Mustangs. Offer to pick them up and bring them to a meeting, or invite them to a club event. Be sure to introduce them to other members and don't let them sit alone in the corner. • Our 11-month old 2006 Mustang car battery went dead the other day after the car sat for 1 week (NO, the lights were not on). Has anybody else had similar issues with the newer cars? • We had a strong turnout at the first Cruise-in to Culvers in Westland on April 15th. Over 30 members were present. As always the food was good, the ice cream was better, but the company was the best! Be sure to check the club calendar in each newsletter to find out about upcoming MOCSEM events. See pictures on Page 5. • Our very own Mustang Memories All Ford Car Show and Swap Meet will be held this year on August 12th. Major Sponsor and Trophy Sponsor letters are now available so we can start approaching businesses to participate in the show. Businesses or individuals can sponsor trophy classes for $100/class. Please think about asking any businesses you have asked in the past and any other companies that may have an interest in the show. We are off to a good start with commitments from Hines Park Ford, Auto Alliance International (Home of the Mustang), and Livernois Motorsports. Show flyers will be available at the May meeting and will be posted on the MOCSEM website very soon. We should have information regarding the show committees at the May meeting. Contact Mike Rey or myself for more info. • Those of you who attended the Village Ford Spring Swap Meet may have noticed the flyer for two of our major prizes that will be raffled at Mustang Memories this year. We have a 10-drawer Craftsman Tool Chest and a Mustang Children's Powercar by Fisher- Price. Raffle tickets are available for both of these items to be sold prior to and during the show. We are also recording names and phone numbers on the tickets so the winner does not need to be present at the show to win. Hopefully this allows the club to reach more people than on just the day of the show and will result in more ticket sales. We will be selling raffle tickets at a number of MOCSEM events during the summer. Contact Jenny Root or Phyllis Berk for tickets. • Ford showed the new Shelby GT500KR at the New York Auto Show. With only 1000 of these beasts being made, how much will they sell for over MSRP? • My wife and I really enjoy our new Ford Edge. It is the first Ford vehicle where I have heard Kathy rave about it to other people. We also have had a number of people come up and ask about it at gas stations and Kathy’s workplace. Hopefully it is a sign of better things from Ford.

ACCELERATOR-MOCSEM Newsletter PAGE 7 Top 40 Car Movies (Part 4)

Our friends at Hot Rod Magazine asked their readers and online viewers to rate the Top 40 car movies of all time. Because of so many movies that could possibly qualify, the contenders were narrowed down by movies that are available on DVD and were originally released for the movie theater. The final installment of our 4-part series finishes with a countdown of the top ten.

10. Hollywood Knights (1980) Starring: '57 Chevy, '66 Cobra 427, and numerous street rods. This rip-off of American Graffiti features a lot of crude humor (the punch has a little “wang” to it). I remember this movie from my pre-High School days of sneaking into R-rated movies. Not that I condone that kind of thing today. This was also Michelle Pfeiffer’s first movie – we all have to start somewhere.

9. The Blues Brothers (1980) Starring: '74 Monaco Police Package. I still laugh every time I think about this movie. There are so many stars of movies and music in this film; it seems I see something new every time I watch it. Belushi and Aykroyd were on a “mission from God” and we were happy to be along for the ride. Where else can you see a police chase through an actual shopping mall!

8. (1977) Starring: ’77 Trans Am. This movie was the second highest grossing movie of 1977 behind Star Wars. Burt Reynolds and Sally Field race to Texas to pick up Coors to bring back to Atlanta. Look out for Buford T. Justice! Somehow the emissions choked Trans Am manages to lay rubber throughout the movie.

7. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974) Starring: ’66 Impala, ’69 Charger. The highlight of this film is the low altitude helicopter stunt work. If you watch closely, the Charger alternates between a ’68 and ’69 model. Good thing they made this movie before “The Dukes of Hazard” used up all the remaining Chargers.

6. Thunder Road (1958) Starring: '50 Ford, '57 Chevy, '57 Ford. Still the best movie about moonshine running, even if it is still in black and white. The action filming is first rate and the star-power is Robert Mitchum.

5. The Gumball Rally (1976) Starring: '65 Shelby Cobra 427, '70 Camaro, '71 Spyder. It’s about time Gary Busey made the countdown. A funny movie with great cars in every scene. Like Cannonball Run, another movie inspired by ' Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash featuring a cross-country race.

4. Bullit (1968) Starring: '68 Mustang GT 390, '68 Charger. As a Mustang Club member, I will argue that this should be ranked higher, but what does Hot Rod know. Even though too many hubcaps fly off the Charger and McQueen upshifts the Mustang until it’s in 16th gear, it is still one of the best filmed chase scenes ever. People are still looking for one of the original Mustangs used in the filming. It is rumored to be in a private collection.

3. Vanishing Point (1971) Starring: ’70 Challenger R/T. For no apparent reason, Kowalski (no first name) needs to get from Denver to San Francisco in less than 15 hours and has only a white Challenger and a fistful of amphetamines with which to do it. This is the ultimate Mopar movie. Always look both ways at the train crossing!

2. Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) Starring: '55 Chevy, '70 GTO. No plot, but nobody cares. The ’55 Chevy street races the GTO, then they drag race the GTO at the track. This is the only movie where a character stops to buy a rebuild kit for a ’70 Quadrajet. I don’t think there’s an Oscar category for that.

1. American Graffiti (1973) Starring: '32 Ford five-window, '55 Chevy, '58 Chevy. Before there was Star Wars, George Lucas brought us American Graffiti. The movie cast was a future who’s who of future well-known actors featuring Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Charles Martin Smith, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Candy Clark, and Paul LeMat. Four friends in central California face the future dusk-to-dawn one summer night in 1962; cruising, hanging out, wreaking havoc, and ultimately street racing. In 200 years people will still watch this movie to know what it meant to grow up in an America obsessed with hot rods. It figures that Hot Rod Magazine would pick a movie about hot rods, but it’s hard to argue. ACCELERATOR-MOCSEM Newsletter PAGE 8 NEW LIMITED-EDITION 2007 FORD SHELBY GT500 OFFERS MUSTANG ENTHUSIASTS A CHANCE TO HIT THE REDLINE

• Production of limited-edition Red Stripe Appearance Package for 2007 Shelby GT500 to begin in May. • Special package includes unique exterior striping and badges, Red and Black leather seating, special interior trim and logos and branded Shelby GT500 car cover. • 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 tops in segment quality, says RDA Group research—92 percent of owners would definitely recommend the vehicle to family or friends.

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19, 2007 – Even with demand for the most muscular Mustang ever – the Ford Shelby GT500 – at a record high, Ford is cranking up additional interest with a new, limited-edition package that adds unique visual appeal to the Shelby GT500. Enter the "Red Stripe Appearance Package," to be available beginning in May.

The Ford Shelby GT500 is the most powerful Mustang on the road today and arguably one of the most successful projects from Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) in terms of performance, excitement and, importantly, quality.

In fact, early indicators show the Shelby GT500 is a quality standout. In the most recent Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study from RDA Group, an independent research company based in Bloomfield Hills, Mi., the Shelby GT500 earned praise as the highest- quality Mustang model, with the fewest “things gone wrong” in the first three months of ownership.

The Mustang line scores above the segment average in quality, according to the GQRS study, and the Shelby GT500 specifically scored the top result in the “sports car” segment. “The unmatched quality and power of the latest Mustang masterpiece explains why 9 out of 10 owners are completely satisfied with their overall ownership experience,” the April 2007 RDA Group report concluded.

New Limited-Edition Shelby GT500 Package to be Available Beginning in May

The new Red Stripe Appearance Package will be available on any new 2007 Shelby GT500 Coupe with either White or Black exterior paint. Included in the special-edition package are Bright Red overbody and bodyside stripes, a Red and Black leather interior, unique red- accent exterior badges, including red-tinted Cobra emblems in the grille, fenders, and in the faux gas cap on the rear panel. Even the "SHELBY" letters on the decklid feature red accents.

The Red Stripe Appearance Package also adds unique new premium floor mats with a Red and Silver embroidered "Cobra Snake" logo, plus a fitted Shelby GT500-branded car cover. The appearance package carries an MSRP of $1,650 and will be available from early May through late June, marking the end of the 2007 model run.

"The red package is all about exclusivity," said Robert Parker, Ford’s Car Marketing manager. "Our Mustang customers are eager to buy unique vehicles like the Shelby GT500 and will certainly appreciate the opportunity for something even more exclusive, made in an even more limited number. These are great customers and very passionate. I’m glad we can continue to deliver what they want.”

Shelby GT500 is among the Most Successful Performance Mustangs Ever

Enthusiasm doesn't begin to describe the ongoing demand for the Ford Shelby GT500. In the hyper-competitive auto market where supply routinely surpasses demand, the Shelby GT500 still has a long waiting list of buyers. The Shelby GT500 was created by racing legend Carroll Shelby and Ford SVT and is a modern interpretation of the classic Shelby Mustang of the 1960s. Beneath the hood of every GT500 – including the new Red model – is a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine officially rated at 500 hp. A 6-speed manual gearbox features evenly spaced gears that help provide a sharp, lively driving experience on both road and track.

In addition to the engine upgrades, Ford’s SVT engineers retuned and upgraded key Mustang chassis components. Improvements include revised shocks, spring rates and upgraded stabilizer bars that help the Ford Shelby GT500 maneuver with authority. The GT500's unique design features include wide upper and lower fascia openings with a functional air splitter. On either side, slanting headlamp openings add to the dramatic front appearance. The carefully tailored hood has heat extractors protruding near the leading edge, combining to provide improved airflow and aerodynamics. The MSRP of a 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 starts at $41,675
