ello and welcome to ASIA-EU Cartoon Connection 2016. KOTRA is thrilled to host the 7th annual Cartoon Connection Korea. Cartoon Connection was first hosted by KOTRA and Cartoon in Jeju Island in 2010 with the goal of entering the world’s animation market through Hpromoting cooperation among Korean and EU companies. This year’s event is extra significant in that countries all over Asia, including China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand have taken a great interest in Cartoon Connection. As a result, trilateral cooperation (Korea-EU-ASIA) is expected to launch our event into the stratosphere, as an event in which animation businesses from around the world can find win-win business relationships and strategies. Korea’s free trade agreements with the EU, China and other Asian countries also serve as catalysts to promote international cooperation. Animation has the power to bring together people of different ages, genders, nationalities, cultural backgrounds, professions and more. Through creative imagination, groundbreaking ideas and innovative technology, animation can illuminate the world. Of course, the animation industry adds tremendous value and contributes to world economic development when animated characters meet the manufacturing industry. Today, we firmly believe that our cooperation not only provides momentum to develop the global animation industry, but also brings a smile to faces worldwide. I hope you will find ASIA-EU Cartoon Connection 2016 to be a rewarding experience. I also hope that you will enjoy Jeju Island, the unique costal culture, breathtaking natural beauty and its historical legacies. Once again, I warmly thank all of you and wish you tremendous success in everything you do.

5 Marc Vandeweyer General Director of CARTOON

or now, CARTOON has boosted and promoted the animation industry in Europe through specific events for professionals, such as co- production and financing forums for TV series (Cartoon Forum) and for feature films (Cartoon Movie), as well as international training seminars F(Cartoon Masters). In the last 7 years, thanks to the support of the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe of the European Union, CARTOON has been organising networking meetings (Cartoon Connection) aimed at opening the European market to non-EU countries in order to develop new cooperation opportunities. After six successful Korean editions in Incheon, Busan, and Jeju, CARTOON is very pleased to co-organise this seventh edition in Jeju, which is growing in participation and attracting other Asian companies. The purpose of Cartoon Connection is to establish lasting professional relationships between European producers, broadcasters and distributors, and their Korean and Asian counterparts; to improve knowledge of the different markets; and to encourage cooperation and circulation of animation works between all sides. Some projects co-produced by European and Korean/Asian animation companies and developed thanks to Cartoon Connection could be eligible to participate in Cartoon Forum (TV series) and Cartoon Movie (feature films). We have already awarded 3 Korean projects the possibility to attend Cartoon Forum Toulouse in September last year and will again accept 3 Korean projects, coming out of this edition of Cartoon Connection, for the 2016 edition of the Cartoon Forum. I warmly thank our Korean partners: MOTIE, KOTRA and Jeju Technopark for their strong support. I wish all delegates success in this seventh - of hopefully many more animated meetings!
