  • Hong Kong Govt Ivory Sales Ban NGO Signon Letter 14
To: Hong Kong Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying via Hong Kong Post & e-mail 14 May 2014 URGENT: Hong Kong Government Please Legislate a Permanent Ivory Sales Ban We are writing to you on behalf of a global coalition of international and local wildlife conservation and animal welfare groups, with regards to the continued sales of ivory and ivory products within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. We are calling on the Hong Kong government to enact an urgent, comprehensive and permanent ban on ivory sales. We applaud the government for taking a brave step in January 2014 to commit to the destruction by incineration of 29.6 tonnes of confiscated elephant ivory seized in Hong Kong since 1976. However, we believe that this does not go far enough, and that more needs to be done to curb demand for ivory and effectively diminish illegal trade and elephant poaching. Hong Kong plays a key role in the global ivory trade. The city has been recognized as a major market and transit point for smuggled ivory by CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which considers Hong Kong one of nine countries / regions of priority concern. (1) The current catastrophic poaching crisis, the worst since the 1980s, is causing the killing of tens of thousands of elephants every year for the illegal ivory trade. Much of this ivory passes through Hong Kong illegally on the way to mainland China, where demand is surging. This demand is driven in large part by a new class of wealthy individuals, many of whom travel to Hong Kong as tourists to buy tax free luxury goods – including ivory and ivory products.

Hoover (United States of America) Secretariat: I. Higuero Y. Liu D. Morgan H. Okusu Rapporteurs: A. Caromel E. Jennings R. Mackenzie C. Stafford 17.2 Proposed amendments to Resolution Conf. 4.6 (Rev. CoP17) and Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17) (contd.) and 18.3 Proposed amendments to Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP17) (contd.) South Africa noted its support for the proposed decisions contained in Annex 1 to document CoP18 Doc. 18.1 (Rev. 1) revised by the Secretariat to reflect recommendations found in documents CoP18 Doc. 17.2, 17.3, 18.2, and 18.3. Bangladesh and Eswatini supported additional engagement of local communities in CITES processes. China supported the creation of an in-session working group to discuss further amendments to both documents. New Zealand and Indonesia did not support the amendments suggested in either document CoP18 Doc. 17.2 or CoP18 Doc. 18.3. Though they recognised the importance of consulting rural communities, they echoed earlier comments by Burkina Faso, Colombia, Gabon, Israel, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria that socioeconomic impacts of proposed listings should best be determined at the national level. New Zealand and Indonesia instead supported the suggestion by the United States of America to create guidance to support the engagement processes outlined in Resolution Conf.

  • Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter, and Two Angels C
National Gallery of Art NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ONLINE EDITIONS Italian Paintings of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries Tuscan 13th Century Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter, and Two Angels c. 1290 tempera on panel painted surface (original panel including painted frame): 34.3 × 24.7 cm (13 1/2 × 9 3/4 in.) overall (including added wooden strips): 36 × 26 cm (14 3/16 × 10 1/4 in.) Inscription: on the scroll held by Saint John the Baptist: E[C]CE / AGNU[S] / DEI:[ECCE] / [Q]UI [TOLLIT PECCATUM MUNDI] (from John 1:29) Samuel H. Kress Collection 1952.5.60 ENTRY The enthroned Madonna supports her son, seated on her left knee, with both hands. The child, in a frontal position, blesses with his right hand, holding a roll of parchment in his left. The composition is a variant of the type of the Hodegetria Virgin; in the present case, she does not point towards her son, as in the Byzantine prototype, but instead presents him to the spectator. [1] Her affectionate maternal pose is thus given precedence over her more ritual and impersonal role. But Mary’s pose perhaps has another sense: she seems to be rearranging her son’s small legs to conform them to the cross-legged position considered suitable for judges and sovereigns in the Middle Ages. [2] The panel is painted in a rapid, even cursory manner. The artist omits the form of the throne’s backrest, which remains hidden by the cloth of honor, supported by angels and decorated with bold motifs of popular taste (an interlocking pattern of quatrefoils and octagons).

It is my pleasure as the President of the College of Staten Island to introduce the CSI Foundation’s 2009-2010 Honor Roll of Donors. Honor Roll of DONORS of Roll Honor The Honor Roll of Donors showcases the invaluable support provided by CSI’s generous donors over the past year.
