Like the Romance and Germanic peoples, they are related by area and culture, not so much by blood. Today there are thirteen different Slavic groups divided into three blocs, Eastern, Southern and Western. These include the Russians, Poles, Czechs, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Serbians,Croatians, Macedonians, Slovenians, Bulgarians, Kashubians, Albanians and Slovakians. Although the Lithuanians, Estonians and Latvians are of Baltic tribes, we are including some of their customs as they are similar to those of their Slavic neighbors. Slavic Runes were called "Runitsa", "Cherty y Rezy" ("Strokes and Cuts") and later, "Vlesovitsa". -

They have a codified martial culture that is the envy of many a nation, and citizens in the military enjoy privileges greater than the average man. Vlast (vl-uh-st) A maritime nation between the titans of Ashersleben and Domovina. While their land infantry is dwarfed by other nations, they have an enviable naval force that draws from their large population of fishermen, whalers, and privateers. Płowce (pwohv-tsuh) A miserable nation of farmers to the west. They have been saved from conquest by their muddy winter season, which stalls the progress of soldiers. Sacrifices among the Slavs: Between Archeological Evidence and 19th Century Folklore. Analecta Archaeologica Ressoviensia 10, 271–312 This article discusses the subject of sacrifices among the Slavs using textual, archeological and ethnographic evidence. Although it is a well-known fact that there are not many textual sources concerning early medieval Slavic culture and religion, some aspects of their customs and rituals can be reconstructed by referring to folkloristic materials. According to many scholars, Slavic folk culture (especially that of Eastern Slavs) has preserved some traces of pre-Christian practices, but it is important to maintain a careful approach to ethnographic sources and avoid far-reaching interpretations of archeological evidence in their light. In spite of methodological difficulties, by critically combining different categories of sources it seems possible to offer new interpretations of Slavic beliefs. Keywords: sacrifices, Slavic rituals, Slavic folklore, ethnographic sources, folk beliefs Received: 2.02.2016. Revised: 1.04.2016. Accepted: 30.05.2016. Sacrifices among the Slavs – this interesting subject seems to be a good opportunity to encourage cooperation between archeology and ethnology. In my article, I shall try to trace whether there are any analogies between archeological evidence and folklore material from 19th century with regard to sacrifices. I will also try to sketch the background for analysis of such rituals. Methodological problems When it comes to using ethnographic sources in the interpretation and analysis of archeological evidence, lots of methodological problems have to be taken into account (Chudziak, Kaźmierczak 2014, 367). -

Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 121069 Moscow, Russia; [email protected] Abstract: Linguistic taboos (euphemisms, omissions, and other) are an essential part of Slavic verbal and written culture. In this article, we analyze cryptography as a form of tabooing in the magical texts of the grassroots manuscript tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries (handwritten incantations and herbals). Our main objective is trying to see a system behind separate examples and define which kinds of texts are usually tabooed in incantations and herbals, their topics, and messages. We have managed to find out that the function of keeping secrecy is not relevant for the magical tradition; rather, encryption was used to emphasize the elements that are of special importance. In the book of incantations called the Olonets Codex, dating back to the 17th century, ciphering was used for the names and titles of sacred and demonological characters, antagonists, descriptions of certain rituals, closing phrases for the incantations (amen, “key”), etc. We hypothesize that the encryption is used in the Olonets Codex as a means of retaining the magical strength of all the texts in the manuscripts, protecting from hostile beings, sacralizing where necessary, tabooing what was considered sinful for religious reasons, accentuating the main meanings of the incantations, etc. In the herbals, cryptography is basically used for tabooing of “sinful” or trappy topics (love magic, magic used against courts and authorities, some contexts concerning sorcery, jinx, and “secret” knowledge), and in the texts that had to bear sacral meaning (incantations and prayers). -
