"Fox and Cayooty": an early St'at'imcets-Chinook Jargon bilingual' text Henry Davis and David Robertson University of British Columbia and CHINOOK List This paper contains a transliteration (from the original Duployan shorthand) and . translation of an early bilingual St'at'imcets-Chinook Jargon text, with accompanying historical, orthographical and grammatical notes. The story was first published in 1892 in the Kamloops Wawa newspaper by the oblate priest J-M.R. Le Jeune; it thus counts as one of the earliest texts in either language. 1 Introduction 1 It is well known to the student of Salishan languages and cultures that before the time of Franz Boas, extremely few coherent texts, as opposed to relatively numerous fragmentary word-lists, of northwest Native American languages were collected and published. The nascent modern disciplines of anthropology and linguistics demanded such documentation. However, another force besides science played a considerable role in the earliest recordings of indigenous languages of this region: The activities of Christian missionaries, which led to work allowing in some cases (viz. Joseph Giorda, S1's 1871 dictionary of Kalispel) an excellent view of historical stages in the lives of these languages otherwise lost to us.2 An example of the same phenomenon is available to us also in the Kamloops Wawa newspaper published by Oblate father J.-M.R. Le Jeune from 1891 to about 19043, primarily in the Chinook Jargon, of which it is an extensive and often overlooked document. In volume 2, Issue 47 of Kamloops Wawa, dated October 16 [sic], 18924, we find under the English heading "Recreative" the following: Kopa Pavilion ilihi nsaika tlap ukuk hloima syisim kopa Lilwat wawa[:] Fox and Cayooty.~. -

“VIEWPOINTS” ON RECONCILIATION: INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION IN THE SOUTHERN INTERIOR OF BC 2020 Project Synopsis By Christopher Horsethief, PhD, Dallas Good Water, MA, Harron Hall, BA, Jessica Morin, MA, Michele Morin, BSW, Roy Pogorzelski, MA September 1, 2020 Research Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Executive Summary This research project synopsis presents diverse Indigenous community perspectives regarding the efforts needed to enable systemic change toward reconciliation within a public post-secondary educational institution in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. The main research question for this project was “How does a community college respectfully engage in reconciliation through education with the First Nations and Métis communities in the traditional territories in which it operates?” This research was realized by a team of six Indigenous researchers, representing distinct Indigenous groups within the region. It offers Indigenous perspectives, insights, and recommendations that can help guide post-secondary education toward systemic change. This research project was Indigenous led within an Indigenous research paradigm and done in collaboration with multiple communities throughout the Southern Interior region of British Columbia. welcome to Indian Country Take a moment, and look up from where you are right now. If you are gazing across the waters of Puget Sound, realize that Indian peoples thrived all along her shoreline in intimate balance with the natural world, long before Europeans arrived here. If Mount Rainier stands in your view, realize that Indian peoples named it “Tahoma,” long before it was “discovered” by white explorers. Every mountain that you see on the horizon, every stand of forest, every lake and river, every desert vista in eastern Washington, all of these beautiful places are part of our Indian heritage, and carry the songs of our ancestors in the wind. As we have always known, all of Washington State is Indian Country. To get a sense of our connection to these lands, you need only to look at a map of Washington. Over 75 rivers, 13 counties, and hundreds of cities and towns all bear traditional Indian names – Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima, and Spokane among them. Indian peoples guided Lewis and Clark to the Pacifi c, and pointed them safely back to the east. Indian trails became Washington’s earliest roads. Wild salmon, delicately grilled and smoked in Alderwood, has become the hallmark of Washington State cuisine. Come visit our lands, and come learn about our cultures and our peoples. Our families continue to be intimately woven into the world around us. As Tribes, we will always fi ght for preservation of our natural resources. As Tribes, we will always hold our elders and our ancestors in respect. WY-U3-1WM ll^l^HH hKUTI IU l.fUb-O.iUJJ'} K.tU 1 Western Washington Indian Knowlege of Mountain Goat in the Nineteenth Century : Historic, Ethnographic, and Linguistic Data Introductory remarks This commentary is written in response to a request from the National Park Service for a review of materials concerning evidence relating to presence or absence of mountain goat in the Olympic Mountains prior to introduction of this species in the 1920s. Dr. Lyman (1988) noted that the view that mountain goat were not native to the Olympic Peninsula is based on an absence of biological reports, absence of historical and ethnographic records, and lack of archaeofaunal evidence of pre-1920s presence of the species in this region. -

Lillooet between Sechelt and Shuswap Jan P. van Eijk First Nations University of Canada Although most details of the grammatical and lexical structure of Lillooet put this language firmly within the Interior branch of the Salish language family, Lillooet also shares some features with the Coast or Central branch. In this paper we describe some of the similarities between Lillooet and one of its closest Interior relatives, viz., Shuswap, and we also note some similarities be tween Lillooet and Sechelt, one of Lillooet' s western neighbours but belonging to the Coast branch. Particular attention is paid to some obvious loans between Lillooet and Sechelt. 1 Introduction Lillooet belongs with Shuswap to the Interior branch of the Salish language family, while Sechelt belongs to the Coast or Central branch. In what follows we describe the similarities and differences between Lillooet and both Shuswap and Sechelt, under the following headings: Phonology (section 2), Morphology (3), Lexicon (4), and Lillooet-Sechelt borrowings (5). Conclusions are given in 6. I omit a comparison between the syntactic patterns of these three languages, since my information on Sechelt syntax is limited to a brief text (Timmers 1974), and Beaumont 1985 is currently unavailable to me. Although borrowings between Lillooet and Shuswap have obviously taken place, many of these will be impossible to trace due to the close over-all resemblance between these two languages. Shuswap data are mainly drawn from the western dialects, as described in Kuipers 1974 and 1975. (For a description of the eastern dialects I refer to Kuipers 1989.) Lillooet data are from Van Eijk 1997, while Sechelt data are from Timmers 1973, 1974, 1977. -

xix Introduction In 1936, at the age of just 26, Mary R. Haas moved from New Haven, Connecticut to Eufaula, Oklahoma to begin a study of the Creek (Muskogee) language. It was the height of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, and jobs were scarce, but with help from former teachers Haas found meager support for her research until the threat of war in 1941. The texts in this volume are a result of that project. About Mary R. Haas Mary R. Haas was born January 23, 1910 in Richmond, Indiana to Robert Jeremiah Haas and Leona Crowe Haas.1 She received three years of tuition scholarships at Earlham College, where she studied English.2 She also received a scholarship in music during her final year and graduated at the head of her class in 1930.3 She entered graduate school in the Department of Comparative Philology at the University of Chicago the same year. There she studied Gothic, Old High German with Leonard Bloomfield, Sanskrit, and Psychology of Language with Edward Sapir.4 She also met and married her fellow student Morris Swadesh. The two traveled to British Columbia after their first year to work on Nitinat, and then followed Sapir to Yale University’s Department of Linguistics in 1931. She continued her studies there of Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit and took two courses in Primitive Music.5 Haas worked as Sapir’s research assistant from 1931 to 1933.6 In the summer of 1933, she received funding to conduct field work in Louisiana with the last speaker of Tunica, close to where Swadesh was working on Chitimacha.7 Haas’s next project was the Natchez language of eastern Oklahoma. -

Salish reduplication signals such typologically common categories as "distributive/plural," "repetitive/continuative," and "diminutive," the cross-linguistically marked but typically Salish notion of "out-of-control" or more restricted categories in particular Salish languages. In addition to these functions, reduplication also plays a role in numeral systems of the Salish languages. The basic forms of several numerals appear to be reduplicated throughout the Salish family. In addition, correspondences among the various Interior Salish languages suggest the association of certain reduplicative patterns with particular "counting forms" referring to specific nominal categories. Hall Date: 10/21/07 Transcribed: Brianna Finney DH: Thank you for taking your time with us today. As you know from our other conversations this project is about sustainability from the perspective of indigenous leaders and our aim is to hear from you on the subject today. JA: Okay DH: To start can you just share a little bit about yourself in terms of your background, cultural heritage, and your work? JA: My name is Jeannette Armstrong. My Okanagan Syilx name means something like the light, rippling off of moving water. It’s an image name. I come from the Okanagan, but my mother is from Kettle Falls at the Columbia River. The Okanagan River is the most northern area that the salmon reach in their spawn. I come from a people that were people that respected and loved salmon on the way to the Columbia. DH: So you mentioned some of the geography and the area that you are connected with. How would you define your community in terms of geography and people? JA: We’re Salishan peoples of the interior plateau. There are quite a number of Salishan tribes in the interior Columbia River Basin area, and we’re simply one of them. One of the things about the Okanagan is that, the Okanagan Lake System of course is quite a large lake system, and empties into the Okanagan River and meets the Columbia River at Brewster, Washington. So my Nation, the Okanagan Nation, is actually larger than the Okanagan valley and it was simply a name attributed to us because I guess the population of people in the Okanagan Valley was significant. -

COAST SALISH SENSES OF PLACE: Dwelling, Meaning, Power, Property and Territory in the Coast Salish World by BRIAN DAVID THOM Department of Anthropology, McGill University, Montréal March, 2005 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Brian Thom, 2005 Abstract This study addresses the question of the nature of indigenous people's connection to the land, and the implications of this for articulating these connections in legal arenas where questions of Aboriginal title and land claims are at issue. The idea of 'place' is developed, based in a phenomenology of dwelling which takes profound attachments to home places as shaping and being shaped by ontological orientation and social organization. In this theory of the 'senses of place', the author emphasizes the relationships between meaning and power experienced and embodied in place, and the social systems of property and territory that forms indigenous land tenure systems. To explore this theoretical notion of senses of place, the study develops a detailed ethnography of a Coast Salish Aboriginal community on southeast Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Through this ethnography of dwelling, the ways in which places become richly imbued with meanings and how they shape social organization and generate social action are examined. Narratives with Coast Salish community members, set in a broad context of discussing land claims, provide context for understanding senses of place imbued with ancestors, myth, spirit, power, language, history, property, territory and boundaries. The author concludes in arguing that by attending to a theorized understanding of highly local senses of place, nuanced conceptions of indigenous relationships to land which appreciate indigenous relations to land in their own terms can be articulated. -
