February 24, 2011

Dear Parishioners,

I am going to retire from Saint Anne School at the end of this school year. It has been my privi- lege to be your principal for ten years. I feel I have been very blessed to be a part of St. Anne School and the parish community. Thanks to a wonderful spirit here at Saint Anne, much has been accomplished. We have cre- ated a positive environment which fosters the Catholic identity of the school. We have revised the curriculum and updated all the text books several times, expanded the foreign language de- partment to include Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, led the school through a successful evaluation with the Archdiocese and the state, been named a Blue Ribbon School in 2006 through the Department of Education, Washington, DC, expanded the use of technology through the building, initiated the Special Services program, and involved all teachers in strate- gic planning and workshops to meet the challenges in education today. I have had the opportunity to work with your children. They truly are treasures, and I have en- joyed seeing them grow into confident, kind, and generous young people. All this has been accomplished by a very talented, competent, and dedicated faculty and staff, School Board, Home and School Board, Athletic Board, and the cooperation of very supportive parents. I also want to thank the parish staff and the special people in the parish community who have walked this journey with me. They have supported me by their interest, their encouragement, and their prayers. I have had the opportunity and privilege of working with two outstanding pastors, Father Jack and Father Bernie, who gave me encouragement and supported me in my ministry. Saint Anne holds a very special place in my heart and prayers. It is my hope and prayer that everyone will continue to support the new principal. Sincerely,

Sister Ann Busch

POISOMINMMIMMIMIIWINOSOMT MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION MEETING Thursday, March 3rd 7:00 p.m., St. Anne School The focus of the meeting will be on the transition from fifth grade into sixth. While this information is most useful to parents of current fifth graders, any- one interested in knowing more about the middle school is invited to attend. The middle school teachers will begin with an overview of the sixth grade curriculum. There will also be a discussion about the transition into sixth grade and what the expectations will be for your child. An opportunity to ask questions following the presentation will be made available. For more infor- mation, contact the school office at 847.381.0311.

HELPING TO FEED THE WORLD'S HUNGRY St. Anne School fifth graders, along with their teacher, Anne Rometty, visited Feed My Starving Children where they packed 10,584 bags of food—enough to feed 29 children for one year.

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organi- zation in Aurora that feeds hungry children in nearly 70 countries. With input of food scientists from major food companies, they developed a food mixture that would be easy and safe to transport, simple to make with boiling wa- ter, and culturally acceptable worldwide. As part of their Social Studies curriculum, the students were not only able to help children their age somewhere in the world, but they also learned about literacy rates, aver- age income, and poverty rates in the countries where they were sending the food.

The students not only packaged the food, but they also prepared and tasted it. Each food bundle consisted of rice, extruded soy nuggets, vitamins, minerals, vegetarian chicken flavoring and de- hydrated vegetables. A single bag of food, which feeds six children, costs around $1.44 to produce. To make a donation to Feed My Starving Children or to schedule a volunteer session, visit www.fmsc.org .

New Registration: St. Anne School is currently accepting new registration for the 2011-12 school year for all grades. Contact the school office at 847.381.0311 for more information and to schedule a school tour.

THE FORGIVENESS OF JESUS: A CELEBRATION BY SISTER LAURETTA LEIPZIG, PASTORAL ASSOCIATE/DIRECTOR OF ADULT EDUCATION Over the years, authors have penned some interesting reflections on Jesus' attitude toward sin and the sinner. Jesus was well aware of what human beings are capable of and so are we—envy, murder, theft, malice, fraud, slander, arrogance. These are but a few sins we will mention. Yet, when Mark describes the Last Judgment, he mentions none of these! There is only one criterion that separates sheep and goats - sensitivity to those in need—the hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned. Interesting also, is Jesus' conduct toward the sinner. The sinner has not been born whom Jesus will not forgive. This is the startling statement that Mark puts on the lips of Jesus. "I assure you that people can be forgiven all their sins and all the evil things they may say." Why would we refuse forgiveness? If we think that accepting forgiveness would be too pain- ful, too humiliating, the consequences too heavy, we might consider the way Jesus dealt with sinners. You will remember that the disciples ran for their lives when Jesus was arrested. They were terrified when Jesus walked in on them three days after he had been buried. Yet, there was no word of rebuke. Instead, he embraced them with a single, wondrous word: Peace! At dinner in the house of Simon the Pharisee, Jesus watched a woman make her way to his place at the table. She knelt weeping, covering his feet with her tears, drying them with her hair. Of course, the guests were horrified! The woman was known to be "living an immoral life in the town." Jesus con- trasted the love she showed him to the discourtesy shown him by his host. "Her great love proves her many sins are forgiven." No lecture, no admonition, only praise for someone who knew she needed help. Lastly, there is the Prodigal Son. He had violated every canon of law and decency. Yet, when he knelt in the road to beg his Father's forgiveness, he was barely allowed to recite his little plea for pardon. The Father pulled him to his feet, embraced him and called his family and friends to celebrate. Forgiveness is truly a time of celebration!!

MARCH BOOK CLUB Join the St. Anne Book Club on Tuesday, March 15th, from 7:30 — 8:30 p.m., in the parish library to discuss the March selection, The Good Wife, by Steward O'Nan. Following is a review of the book: Patty Dickerson, the resilient heroine of O'Nan's forceful, oddly moving ninth novel, is pregnant with her first child and waiting for her husband, Tommy, on a snowy night in the mid 1970's, when the phone rings. It's Tommy, and he's in jail after a robbery. He's been a thief for some time, a fact Patty has refused to acknowledge. Unfortunately, Tommy's latest esca- pade involves arson and death. Convicted of murder in the second degree, he receives a sentence of 25 years to life. The main story is Patty's, told in the present tense in quietly lyrical and observant prose: the struggle to make ends meet in an economically depressed upstate New York commu- nity, the shame of her son's father being in prison, the frustrating and hu- miliating treatment the penal system inflicts on prisoners and family alike. In a sense, Patty's life is on semi-permanent hold over the 28 years Tommy spends in a correctional facility, but of course, it isn't really. Her son grows up, she visits her husband as often as she can, she works mostly at dead-end jobs, and eventually she creates a ca- reer for herself. In other words, she makes a life that's both with and without her love. We look forward to seeing anyone who would like to join the group for this discussion. r 91raiwy 40(6tre49w A 3-week program for anyone who has distanced himself/herself from a deeper commitment to active participation in the worship and activities of our faith community SUNDAYS — March 13th — March 27th 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. HOSPITALITY ROOM (lower level)

We welcome and look forward to meeting those who wish to rediscover the abundant riches of Catholic spirituality and who want to better understand that walking with God is the best way to live.

February 27, 2011 17 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER CHURCH WOMEN UNITED OF THE BARRINGTON AREA Friday, March 4th, 1:00 p.m. Cary United Methodist Church, 500 N. First Street, Cary, 847.639.7627 The women of Chile have written this year's service around the theme, "How Many Loaves Have You?" Bread is central to Chileans' daily life; sharing it is a universal sign of hospitality. Enduring a devastating earthquake in February, 2010, they ask us to enter a process that draws us into the Bible, into the context of Chile and into the real situations of our lives and communities. How many loaves have you? What are your gifts? What can you share? Rev. Shirley Pulgar-Hughes, born in Chile and co-pastor of Cary United Methodist Church, will be the speaker. Pastor Shirley is passionate about her faith, and her love of preaching the word couples with her heart for missions and care for the less fortunate in the world. Come and bring a friend. Plan to stay after the worship service for a time of refreshments and fellowship. An offering will be received to support World Day of Prayer USA and help meet the needs of families who are vic- tims of many forms of poverty, violence and human trafficking. Attendees may bring sharpened pencils to be given to students at Beyer Elementary School in Rockford, where several CWU members are volunteering. For more information, contact Mindy Hogan at 847.381.6271.
