I will be retiring on May 1 after 18 years as your Executive Director. The experience has been more than I could have ever imagined. I have met thousands of Junior Auxiliary members and have made hundreds of lifelong friends. I have made trips to visit your Chapters and along the way helped many of you through some pretty tough issues. Daily, I answered questions and gave support to those “in the field”. The area and annual meetings have been so much fun to plan and then even more fun to attend. I can only imagine how many NAJA committee meetings I have attended. The work that your volunteers do at the national level is important and they are so dedicated to the Association and to supporting you at the local level. This has not just been a job, it has been much of my life…a life that I loved! But, it is now time for me to put my family first. I have seven grandchildren that I want to spend more time with. Some are almost grown and on their own! A committee will soon be meeting to begin the search for my replacement. I cannot wait to meet the fourth woman to take over the helm and help her learn the ropes. Our Junior Auxiliary Prayer says it well: we help the children whom none have blessed, the famished whom none have visited, the fallen whom none have lifted, and the bereaved whom none comforted. I encourage you and your Chapter to use the 2017-2018 Bulletin as a means to find new ways to pay it forward. Each of our 92 Chapters has a Bulletin page listing its service pro- jects, finance projects (along with the net amount raised), and public relations efforts. This information about what other Chapters are doing may inspire you to add a new service or fundraising project. Ask the leaders of other Chapters about their projects and how they might fit your community. The contact information for Chapter officers and committee chairs is listed in the Bulletin. I encourage Chapters to help each other reach our common goal of rendering charitable service to the public with a particular emphasis on children. Did you know the Bulletin can be used to train Provisional Members and educate Active Members? It not only contains valuable information about the local Chapter but also the JA Prayer, JA Slogan, and our current National Focus. The Bulletin also lists the contact infor- mation for all National Officers, Chapter Support Coordinators, Standing Committee Members, Chapter Development Coordinators, NAJA Foundation Trustees, NAJA PRESIDENT Parliamentarian, and NAJA Staff so that you can reach out to them if you have a question. Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative.

    GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION SCOPE AND CONTENT Documents relating to the career of director GERALD THOMAS (Born Hull 10/12/1920, died Beaconsfield 9/11/1993). When Gerald Thomas died, his producer partner of 40 years Peter Rogers said: ‘His epitaph will be that he directed all the Carry On films.’ Indeed, for an intense 20-year period Thomas directed the Carry On gang through their innuendo laden exploits, and became responsible, along with Rogers, for creating one of the most enduring and endearing British film series, earning him his place in British popular culture. Thomas originally studied to become a doctor, before war service with the Royal Sussex Regiment put paid to his medical career. When demobilised in 1946, he took a job as assistant in the cutting rooms of Two Cities Films at Denham Studios, where he took Assistant Editor credits on Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948) and the John Mills thriller The October Man (1947). In 1949, he received his first full credit as editor, on the Margaret Lockwood melodrama Madness of the Heart (1949). During this time Peter Rogers had been working as associate producer with his wife, producer Betty Box, on such films as It’s Not Cricket (1949) and Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949). It was Venetian Bird in 1952 that first brought Thomas and Rogers together; Thomas employed as editor by director brother Ralph, and Rogers part of the producer team with Betty Box. Rogers was keen to form a director/producer pairing (following the successful example of Box and Ralph Thomas), and so gave Gerald his first directing credit on the Circus Friends (1956), a Children’s Film Foundation production.
