Ph.D. Candidate, Doctorado en Historia y Artes – Arquelogía y Cultura Material, Universidad de Granada. Via Is Mirrionis 119, 09121 Cagliari, Italy. Email: [email protected] Abstract: One of the most important megalithic groups in Western Europe in terms of number and characteristics is the group of over 200 monuments of various types in Sardinia. It now seems to be confirmed that the rise of the megalithic phenomenon was during the culture of San Michele of Ozieri (Late Neolithic, 4000-3300 B.C.E.). The Sardinian dolmen graves, however, had a maximum distribution during the Chalcolithic, as evidenced by most of the finds from excavations. The phenomenon also shows a close relationship beyond Sardinia and especially with the monuments of Catalonia, Pyrenees, non-coastal departments of French-midi, Corsica and Puglia. About 90 dolmen graves of various types have been investigated, namely the simple type, “corridor” type, “allée couverte” type, and others of uncertain attribution, located in central-western Sardinia, and particularly in a significant area of ca. 3500 km2 coinciding with the historical regions of Marghine-Planargia, Middle Valley of Tirso and Montiferru. This includes some 40% of all Sardinian dolmens. Locational trends and relationships with regard to landscape elements were studied with the aid of GIS methodologies such as viewshed and cost surface analysis.

We seek to assess the changes of the portrait of the military over a 57-year period, looking at the relevant narratives that have occurred in the local press. The authors’ perspective scrutinises the local print media as a key medium for understanding representations of the military and its activities. The adoption of frame analysis and the study of the frame effects highlight two main historical storylines. In the early stages of the military base, the military was portrayed as an agent of change, a frame defined as modernity versus tradition. A gradual decline followed in the wake of growing concerns related to the after-effects of experimental military activities, and the military came to be perceived as a threat to local community, military personnel and the environment. Keywords Ethnographic content analysis, local press, military bases, risk, social movements Corresponding author: Simone Maddanu, Department of Social Sciences and Institutions, University of Cagliari, Via Fra Ignazio 78, 09123 Cagliari, Italy. Email: [email protected] 2 Journalism Introduction In 1956, the largest Italian military range and rocket launching site was built in Sardinia and transformed a few years later into an Inter-service Test and Training Range (PISQ1), evolving into one of the most important experimental military areas and training centres in Europe.

The Lemon House Newsletter March 2015

THE LEMON HOUSE March 2015 Newsletter We have been back in Sardinia for just a week since our winter break and before the house is full again from 29 March, we have time to write a newsletter to update people on what we did over the winter, news from The Lemon House and new developments in Sardinia and in our area in particular. Our winter Our season ended in mid-November and we spent most of the winter in Rome, where we own a small apartment. Peter had decided this winter to study history. As guests in October learnt, when we was already getting stressed, first when the course material didn’t arrive and then when it did (!). He had dropped history aged 14 at school to concentrate on sciences but over the last couple of years had become more and more interested in European History, not least because of the mix of guests we have at The Lemon House and the current debate over the future of Europe. He had enrolled in the Winter Semester for the introductory history course G1, Geschichte 1 (in German) from the Bachelor’s degree at the Fern Uni in Hagen (link in English), Germany’s largest university and only state-supported distance learning university. After growing up in the UK and having lived in Italy for 17 years, Peter was particularly interested to study history from a German perspective. The Fern Uni gave him the chance to do this and with his usual application studied hard most of the winter (below right: Anne was away for a week, Peter lived on pizza and beer and course notes ).
