Annual Report ANNUAL REPORT SEASON 2007-2008 PRESENTATION NIGHT 7.30pm Friday 4th April 2008 at Pennant Hills Bowling Club Normanhurst-Warrawee Cricket Club formerly known as Normanhurst Cricket Club Established in 1926 (Foundation Club in HK&HDCA) A DIVISION OF NORMANHURST SPORTS CLUB www.normosports.com PRESIDENT’S REPORT Well. What a season - centuries, hat-tricks, personal bests and some great team results. You always know it’s a fun year when it finishes before you know it or want it to! A big thankyou to the Committee for a fantastic job they have done. John Corish and Sue Haertsch have done a magnificent job organising juniors, ensuring that it ran smoothly and efficiently. Chris Hawkins did a wonderful job in his first year as our equipment officer and I am sure he enjoyed purchasing our new bowling machine! Mr Pietsch has done a stellar job organising our accounts for the last 2 years, however a newborn and knee surgery will see it as his last year in the position. Our club is lucky enough to own a bowling machine. Through governments grants we were able to purchase this so that it can be of benefit to all of our players and coaches. I would like to congratulate all our coaches and managers for the way they have conducted themselves and I am sure that all teams thank them for their energy, time and commitment that they have put in. On a personal note, 2007-2008 will be my last year as President. After two fun years, and seven on the Committee, it is time for me to move on to achieve some personal goals. I would like to thank all those people who I have had the privilege to associate with over those seven years: coaches, managers, players and committee members. Thankyou. Cameron Riddett President 2007-2008 COMMITTEE President Cameron Riddett Vice-President (Junior Coordinator) John Corish Secretary Bryan Massey Treasurer Matt Pietsch Junior Registrar Sue Haertsch Equipment Officer Chris Hawkins Webmaster Dave Croft Senior Coordinator Rocco Giaquinto Have a Go Coordinator Anthony Maxworthy Clothing Officer Melissa Maxworthy Sponsorship Coordinator Anthony Maxworthy Normanhurst-Warrawee Cricket Club thanks our principal sponsor Pennant Hills Bowling Club for their continued support throughout the 2007-2008 season. SENIOR’S REPORT Well what a disaster to finish with. What are the odds of all 6 senior teams making the semi-finals and not one making it into a final………? I’m glad no one placed a bet on that one. The 2007-2008 season had some great milestones, which I am sure will be always remembered: • hundreds by: Colts captain Rob Waight (103); B Grade’s Brett Salisbury (101); & C3’s Michael Devitt (102*), • a hat-trick in the semi-final by A grades own Rocco Giaquinto (6/28), & another by B grades Naish Somaiya (3/19), • A grade finishing minor premiers, and • great bowling performances by: Brett Turpin (B Grade, 8 for 91 including 4 caught & bowled dismissals); & Simon Riddett (C3, 7 for 50). All captains must be congratulated on managing their teams with dignity, pride & in the “Normo Way” - they have done our club proud. They are: A Grade Murray Rowe Colts Rob Waight B Grade Cameron Riddett C2 Grade Mathew Pietsch / Dirk Drieberg C3 Grade Bryan Massey D2 Grade Andrew Thomson Thank you to all those that turned up to Thursday evening practices and the few BBQs that occurred throughout the season. Without your assistance, these would not have run as smoothly as they did, and those participating would not have enjoyed themselves as much as they did. Lastly, I would like to thank all those juniors that filled in for senior teams throughout the season: Cameron Allen, Chinmay Chitale, Tim Corish, James Coutts, Lachlan Ford, Mitchell Fullagar, Lindsay Haertsch, Matthew Haertsch, Michael Kerr, Mitchell Skulander, Lachlan Skulander, Guy Seymour, Ned Williams, Jarrod Witts. I am sure I have forgotten a few more, but from the seniors – Thankyou! Cameron Riddett ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Normanhurst-Warrawee Cricket Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at Pennant Hills Bowling Club, 52 Yarrara Road, Pennant Hills, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 4th June 2008. Current office holders will briefly report on the achievements of the past season and the Treasurer will present the yearly accounts. There will be the important election of officers for 2008-2009 and other general business. If you wish to stand for one of the Committee positions, please notify the Secretary or myself prior to the AGM. If you would like a particular issue raised at the AGM, please advise our Secretary, Bryan Massey, in writing by 20th May so that all members can be made aware of any special topics for discussion. Please attend this meeting to support the future of the club. Cameron Riddett President (CRICKET) LIFE MEMBERS OF NORMANHURST SPORTS CLUB B. Hall Bill Hands Graham Swan Ken Hall Keith Carter Bruce Wood VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT ON THE JUNIORS NWCC has had a tremendous season in 2007-2008 in the juniors, continuing to grow and develop and increasingly able to offer a great environment for junior players in which to enjoy their cricket. The big wins for the junior club this year have been increased playing numbers with at least one team playing in every age group; continued strong representation in HK&HDCA Representative sides; and a very enthusiastic and active Have a Go program. However, the weather was a significant limitation to the season, with many Saturdays and training sessions lost to rain and/or unplayable conditions, and prevented teams developing continuity and momentum into the season. The junior club fielded 16 teams this season, a big increase on the 12 sides that have represented the club over the last couple of seasons. A total of five teams in the U9 competition is a very satisfying outcome, particularly as all sides reportedly enjoyed their cricket and competed each week very enthusiastically and successfully. We also had two sides in the U10s, U11s, U13s, & U14 competitions, and one side in the U12, U15 & U16s (with one U13 team a joint effort with Kissing Point CC). The formation of the U15 side, with thanks to the great work undertaken by Rod Seymour and Marty van Rhoon in getting this side together and running it throughout the season, meant that the club had a side in every age group for the first time in six seasons. All teams performed well and enjoyed their cricket and continued to develop individual and team skills. A special thank you to all Coaches, Managers, Assistant Coaches and scorers for their hard work and commitment during the season that has made it all possible for the boys and girls. The Committee is very grateful that these roles are taken on year after year so enthusiastically and professionally. It was great to hear and see the pride that everyone had in their respective teams, not only in playing well but also playing and behaving within the spirit of the game. Two teams deserve special mention for their performances during the season. The U15 side set the pace in their competition for most of the season to eventually qualify for the semi-finals in 2nd place, before being beaten in a close semi-final contest. For a newly assembled side comprising 9 players plus an assistant coach who were new to the club, with six players eligible to play in younger age groups, and two players enjoying their first season of cricket, this result was an outstanding achievement. The U14 Red side cracked the semi-finals for the first time in their competition, before they too were beaten in a rain affected semi-final. This was also an outstanding achievement from this team, and testament to the hard work and effort expended by coach Graham Skulander and his boys. The Milo Have a Go program for 5 to 7 year olds was back to its strongest under the guidance of Paul Haigh and with the coordination of club stalwart Anthony Maxworthy. In addition to the Saturday morning sessions at NWPS, the season was highlighted with a lunch time game at North Sydney Oval during the Ford Ranger Cup match between NSW and Tasmania (featuring big-name players including Ponting, Katich, Haddin & Bracken). The Have a Go season also included two twilight sessions with Hornsby CC, and finished with a test match at Normo Oval where kids and some brave parents played a ‘real’ game. A total of 25 junior NWCC players were selected in HK&HDCA (boys) or Northern Sydney (girls) representative sides this season. Being selected and competing in these sides is a tremendous individual achievement for these players, and provides great opportunities for these talented players to practice and develop their skills at a higher level. Particular mention is made of players selected in the NSW Emerging Blues program – Jarrod Witts (U15), Lachlan Ford (U14), Jordan Pidgeon (U13), Guy Seymour (U13), and the NSW Emerging Breakers program – Maddie Latham (U14). The club’s depth of talent was also clearly demonstrated in the two HK&HDCA showcase representative games held each year. These games were over-represented with NWCC players: – the U12 Glenn Hourigan Cup game featured 8 NWCC players out of the 24 who played, and the U15 Ross Turner Cup game (that was unfortunately washed out) including 5 NWCC players out of the 24 selected. A huge thank you Cameron Riddett and Sue Haertsch for the tremendous amount of time and effort that they have continued to each put into NWCC junior cricket over many seasons. With this type of continued involvement and participation of parents and senior players in the running of teams and the club, a very promising and rewarding future is assured for everyone involved with NWCC.

  • The Captains' Review of the 2012 Season
Review of the 2012 Season 1st XI A good season for the club with the 1st XI exceeding expectations to finish an excellent third on their return to the top flight and whilst the 2’s and 3s under-performed, Premier league status was maintained for both. The 4th XI had another excellent season and after just falling shy of back to back promotions, were retrospectively placed 2nd after Harlow Town fell foul of league rules. Expectations weighed heavily on new 1st XI skipper Jack Kliber, as he took the reins on the return to the Premier League after a 7 year hiatus. After losing three of the first four games, it looked like survival was the main target however the side went unbeaten for the rest of the season to be rewarded with a lofty place in the table. An excellent opening win in a rain reduced affair at home to Colchester kicked the campaign off. Chasing 180 off 38 overs, a fifty from Arshad Ali plus contributions from the middle order left us needing 13 off the last over. However a couple of sixes from Matt Salisbury emphatically settled things, the start of an excellent season with the bat for him. Three pretty convincing losses were a reality check, with Salisbury’s 85 against Wanstead the only highlight, before a vital win on a difficult pitch at Ilford stopped the rot in the last of the first round of limited overs games. Chasing only 117 after excellent spells from Mike Hindley and Ryan Lugg, we were indebted to a gritty partnership between debutant Suhaib Sarwar and Salisbury to see us home.

  • Hawk Green Seeking to Join League in 2019
Cheshire County Cricket League APRIL, 2018 NEWSLETTER Hawk Green seeking to join League in 2019 DERBYSHIRE & Cheshire League club Hawk Green have applied to join the Vivio Cheshire County League at the end of the 2018 season. With a fine ground at Rhode Field, Upper Hibbert Lane, situated a couple of miles from Marple, Hawk Green made a formal application to switch leagues via the Cheshire Clubs Cricket Committee. The development was subsequently discussed between the officers of the County and Cheshire Leagues and, considering the strength of the club and its impressive facilities, it was agreed to advocate that Hawk Green be admitted to the County League for the 2019 season, to play in Division Two. If a proposal that they should be admitted, to be made by Didsbury and seconded by Tattenhall, is ratified at the League management meeting at Warrington on Wednesday, April 11, only the bottom club in Division 2 will be relegated from the County League and only the champion club promoted from the UK Fast League at the end of the 2018 campaign. Hawk Green 2nd XI would then also be promoted to play in the County League’s Second Division. Reporting to the League’s March Cricket Committee, chairman David Humpage said: “Hawk Green are the current Derbyshire and Cheshire League champions and have good playing strength throughout the club, and they possess a ground which easily passes muster. While some people in the UK Fast League felt Hawk Green should start at the bottom of the pyramid and work their way up, it was the general consensus that Hawk Green were of sufficient calibre to merit a place in the County League in 12 months’ time”.

  • Review of the 2014 Season
Review of the 2014 Season 2014 proved to be a massive disappointment after five years of progress as the 1st XI crashed out of the Premier League after successive third placed finishes. Likewise the 2nd XI went backwards and scrabbled about the relegation zone before saving themselves on the penultimate weekend. The 3rd XI had a reasonably solid campaign, finishing 4th and a more than competitive season by the 4th XI rounded things off. 1st XI The 1st XI took on a rather different look to the team that had a chance to win the whole shebang on the last day of 2013. Arshad Ali returned to newly promoted Upminster, Rana Arlsan moved to Woodford Green, Daniel Jacob wasn’t returning for a third year from Sydney and we rarely saw Matt Salisbury who deservedly hit the big time with the county. The story of the 1st XI’s season was really that it never got started. Despite an early morale boosting League Cup win at eventual Premier League winners Chingford, the first half of the campaign was a bit of a write off with no wins recorded. Too often, decent starts with the bat were squandered by some impressive collapses, ruining some solid bowling performances and so at halfway we were looking at a really challenging late summer to survive the drop. Things started to look up with a convincing win at Loughton, Richard Abson-Bennett the star with 5-15 from an assortment of leg breaks. A roll threatened to develop with an extraordinary win at defending champions Wanstead.

  • Sussex V. Durham Specsavers County Championship - Division Two Arundel Castle Cricket Ground Wednesday 20Th – Friday 22Nd June 2018
Sussex v. Durham Specsavers County Championship - Division Two Arundel Castle Cricket Ground Wednesday 20th – Friday 22nd June 2018 Day One It was late on Tuesday evening when Sussex Academy graduate Tom Haines received the unexpected call to play in the Specsavers County Championship Division Two match against Durham. He had played only two championship matches before, both in 2016, when he scored 12 runs in three innings as a 17-year-old, so he must have felt he was making his debut all over again. But the 19-year-old left-hander – called in to replace England Lions call-up Chris Jordan - responded by scoring a memorable maiden first-class century at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, featuring in a record second-wicket stand of 244 in 54 overs with Phil Salt as Sussex piled up 439-5. Salt also scored his maiden ton at this level as the pair celebrated beating Sussex's previous record second-wicket stand against Durham of 196 between Bill Athey and Alan Wells at Hove in 1996 - before either of today's centurions were born! Before the match the Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie has asked his top five to improve on what had been a disappointing start to the season. “We haven’t quite nailed it in the top five,” he said. Sussex went into this game with their batting averages led by all-rounder David Wiese. And they were also without highly rated Stiaan van Zyl, who is missing this match with a knee injury. But Gillespie could not have envisaged this response from a Sussex side, even though they were batting on a relaid and flat looking surface.
