    Review of the 2012 Season 1st XI A good season for the club with the 1st XI exceeding expectations to finish an excellent third on their return to the top flight and whilst the 2’s and 3s under-performed, Premier league status was maintained for both. The 4th XI had another excellent season and after just falling shy of back to back promotions, were retrospectively placed 2nd after Harlow Town fell foul of league rules. Expectations weighed heavily on new 1st XI skipper Jack Kliber, as he took the reins on the return to the Premier League after a 7 year hiatus. After losing three of the first four games, it looked like survival was the main target however the side went unbeaten for the rest of the season to be rewarded with a lofty place in the table. An excellent opening win in a rain reduced affair at home to Colchester kicked the campaign off. Chasing 180 off 38 overs, a fifty from Arshad Ali plus contributions from the middle order left us needing 13 off the last over. However a couple of sixes from Matt Salisbury emphatically settled things, the start of an excellent season with the bat for him. Three pretty convincing losses were a reality check, with Salisbury’s 85 against Wanstead the only highlight, before a vital win on a difficult pitch at Ilford stopped the rot in the last of the first round of limited overs games. Chasing only 117 after excellent spells from Mike Hindley and Ryan Lugg, we were indebted to a gritty partnership between debutant Suhaib Sarwar and Salisbury to see us home.

    We bussed it down to Warwick for a fixture against a Midlands conference XI where SUCC returned to form with a good win, Hill 70 and Pearson 66no were in the runs and Hill amongst the wickets. We then moved down to the Olympia Hotel, our EXTRACT “AUSTRALIAN” 3/4/97 fmal stop, in London. We lost to the strong Cricket conference XI, Wiles strong pre-lunch fonn and the rest of the tpam “CRICKET CLUB'S HEART AND SOUL” nobbled by the incredible spread at lunch, going from 1 for 100 to all out about 170., there being a corporate day (feast?) being conducted. After the post-match drinks, the fund-raiser movie horse-races drew a few desperates. Luke won big but W.E.P. HARRIS then gave it all back. Dentist, sports broadcaster, cricket administrator A good team effort (with a fire-breathing horse on the pitch at one point) saw a win against Lloyds at Maori ground, another Bom Winton, Queensland, 13 October 1925 versus Alan Chamberlain’s Alexandra Park side followed. Pelly and W ilson got 50’s and Webber quick runs in a good tpatn Died Brisbane, Queensland, 22 March 1997, aged 72 batting performance, then after good bowling by the unlucky Farrow, Bonnell, Hill and Salisbury, former SUCC man Richard Kelly’s batting although top score with 44 was restricted by the extra cover and gully fielding 'walls’ set by Hill and bowling to those fields by McGowan and Wilson respectively. In our final fixture an MCC XI was met at Shenley Park north of The main cricket ground at the University of Queensland is a green carpet set among gum trees, London on a cold, driZZly day.

What a season - centuries, hat-tricks, personal bests and some great team results. You always know it’s a fun year when it finishes before you know it or want it to! A big thankyou to the Committee for a fantastic job they have done. John Corish and Sue Haertsch have done a magnificent job organising juniors, ensuring that it ran smoothly and efficiently. Chris Hawkins did a wonderful job in his first year as our equipment officer and I am sure he enjoyed purchasing our new bowling machine! Mr Pietsch has done a stellar job organising our accounts for the last 2 years, however a newborn and knee surgery will see it as his last year in the position. Our club is lucky enough to own a bowling machine. Through governments grants we were able to purchase this so that it can be of benefit to all of our players and coaches. I would like to congratulate all our coaches and managers for the way they have conducted themselves and I am sure that all teams thank them for their energy, time and commitment that they have put in. On a personal note, 2007-2008 will be my last year as President. After two fun years, and seven on the Committee, it is time for me to move on to achieve some personal goals.

    Review of the 2014 Season 2014 proved to be a massive disappointment after five years of progress as the 1st XI crashed out of the Premier League after successive third placed finishes. Likewise the 2nd XI went backwards and scrabbled about the relegation zone before saving themselves on the penultimate weekend. The 3rd XI had a reasonably solid campaign, finishing 4th and a more than competitive season by the 4th XI rounded things off. 1st XI The 1st XI took on a rather different look to the team that had a chance to win the whole shebang on the last day of 2013. Arshad Ali returned to newly promoted Upminster, Rana Arlsan moved to Woodford Green, Daniel Jacob wasn’t returning for a third year from Sydney and we rarely saw Matt Salisbury who deservedly hit the big time with the county. The story of the 1st XI’s season was really that it never got started. Despite an early morale boosting League Cup win at eventual Premier League winners Chingford, the first half of the campaign was a bit of a write off with no wins recorded. Too often, decent starts with the bat were squandered by some impressive collapses, ruining some solid bowling performances and so at halfway we were looking at a really challenging late summer to survive the drop. Things started to look up with a convincing win at Loughton, Richard Abson-Bennett the star with 5-15 from an assortment of leg breaks. A roll threatened to develop with an extraordinary win at defending champions Wanstead.

University was cruising at 0 for 82 from 14 overs, with Ridley (10 fours in 67 minutes) middling everything. Every other finished the job on the second day, claiming his first five wicket haul in grade batsman made a start without building a long innings, and 30 runs were needed from 10 cricket, while Ridley held an extraordinary catch, the highlight of a good fielding overs when Bonnell joined Smith. Smith hit anything loose - especially short - to the display. He had played only two championship matches before, both in 2016, when he scored 12 runs in three innings as a 17-year-old, so he must have felt he was making his debut all over again. But the 19-year-old left-hander – called in to replace England Lions call-up Chris Jordan - responded by scoring a memorable maiden first-class century at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, featuring in a record second-wicket stand of 244 in 54 overs with Phil Salt as Sussex piled up 439-5. Salt also scored his maiden ton at this level as the pair celebrated beating Sussex's previous record second-wicket stand against Durham of 196 between Bill Athey and Alan Wells at Hove in 1996 - before either of today's centurions were born! Before the match the Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie has asked his top five to improve on what had been a disappointing start to the season. “We haven’t quite nailed it in the top five,” he said. Sussex went into this game with their batting averages led by all-rounder David Wiese. And they were also without highly rated Stiaan van Zyl, who is missing this match with a knee injury. But Gillespie could not have envisaged this response from a Sussex side, even though they were batting on a relaid and flat looking surface.

    Durham vs. Sussex CCC Specsavers County Championship - Division Two Emirates Riverside, Chester-le-Street Monday 10th – Wednesday 12th September 2018 Day One Sussex exposed Durham's fragility with the bat in their Specsavers County Championship Division Two match at Emirates Riverside, reducing the home side to 92-7 at the end of day. Durham were inserted following an uncontested toss and were put on the back foot by impressive bowling from the visitors. David Wiese led the way with figures of 3-12, while Ollie Robinson also notched a couple of wickets to continue his impressive term. The home side have struggled with the bat at Emirates Riverside this season, accumulating just two points in the campaign. Once again Jon Lewis' men have it all to do against promotion- chasing Sussex. Only one over of play was possible in the morning session due to bad light. Cameron Steel successfully negotiated the spell from Robinson, although he did get off the mark by edging through the slips to the boundary. Durham's problems began almost immediately after lunch. Alex Lees drove at a fully Jofra Archer delivery, edging the ball straight to Phil Salt at third slip. Will Smith became Robinson's first victim following the opener back to the pavilion in the following over, while Graham Clark was undone by a good delivery as Harry Finch took the catch at second slip. Steel and Michael Richardson were able to offer brief resistance, producing a partnership of 42 runs, using the short boundary to their advantage to attempt to swing momentum back in Durham's favour.
