Waterloo Urban and Industrial Expansion Flora and Fauna Survey
Shire of Dardanup Waterloo Urban and Industrial Expansion Flora and Fauna Survey March 2015 Executive summary This report is subject to, and must be read in conjunction with, the limitations set out in Section 1.4 and the assumptions and qualifications contained throughout the Report. The Greater Bunbury Strategy and Structure Plan identified a potential significant urban expansion area located to the east of the Eaton locality and an industrial expansion area in Waterloo, in the Shire of Dardanup. The Shire of Dardanup (the Shire) and the Department of Planning have commenced preparation of District Structure Plans (DSP) for the urban expansion area and the industrial expansion area. The DSP will be informed by several technical studies including flora and fauna surveys. The Shire has commissioned GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) to undertake a flora and fauna survey and reporting for the Project. The Project Area is situated in the locality of Waterloo in the Shire of Dardanup. The Project Area includes the urban development area to the north of the South- west Highway (SWH) and the industrial development area to the south of the SWH. GHD undertook a desktop assessment of the Project Area and a flora and fauna field assessment with the first phase conducted from 13 to 14 August, 2014 and the second phase conducted from 29 to 31 October 2014. The purpose of this assessment was to identify the parts of the Project Area that have high, moderate and low ecological values so that the Shire can develop the DSP in consideration of these ecological values. This assessment identified the biological features of the Project Area and the key results are as follows. -

It includes the correct nomenclature and authorship of the taxon’s name, as well as the reference of its original publication. According to this Census, the Tasmanian flora contains 2726 vascular plants, of which 1920 (70%) are considered native and 808 (30%) have naturalised from elsewhere. Among the native taxa, 533 (28%) are endemic to the State. Forty-eight of the State’s exotic taxa are considered sparingly naturalised, and are known only from a small number of populations. Twenty-three native taxa are recognised as extinct, whereas eight naturalised taxa are considered to have either not persisted in Tasmania or have been eradicated. -

Abstract Apium in Australasia is reviewed and three species, A. prostratum Labill. ex Vent., A. insuläre Short sp. nov. and A. annuum Short sp. nov. occur naturally in the region. A fourth species, A. graveolens L., the cultivated celery, occasionally occurs as a weed. A. prostratum, widespread throughout the region, is divided into three subspecies, ssp. prostratum, ssp. howense Short ssp. nov., restricted to Lord Howe Island, and ssp. denticulatum Short ssp. nov., confined to the Chatham Islands. A single collection from the Porongorup Range, Western Australia, is also tentatively regarded as representing a separate subspecies of A. prostratum. Two varieties of ssp. prostratum, namely var. prostratum and var. filiforme (A. Rich.) Kirk are distinguished. Both varieties occur in Australia and New Zealand. A. annuum, the only annual in the genus, is confined to Australia. A. insulare occurs on Lord Howe Island and islands of Bass Strait. -

A preliminary index of chromosome numbers for spermatophytes indigenous ro Tasmania is presented, with reference citations. This compilation includes reports for 166 species provenanced from Tasmanian material, many previously published, and also 55 unpublished results (mostly from the work ofWDJ). Selected reports of species indigenous to Tasmania but derived elsewhere (usually material from New Zealand or the Australian mainland) are also included as a basis for further study. In total, chromosome numbers are listed for 400 species (409 taxa, including subspecies and varieties) out of a total estimated spermatophyte flora of 1568 described indigenous species. Ten of the 108 families have been examined in some detail (>45% of species), but the four most speciose families (625/1568 species; Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae and Cyperaceae) have a total of only four Tasmanian reports, despite highly variable chromosome com plements. Five other speciose families (Apiaceae, Brassicaceae, Juncaceae, Rhamnaceae and Scrophulariaceae) have no Tasmanian reports despite demonstrating cytological variability at generic, inter- and intra-specific levels. Further cytological investigation of these taxa is essential for a clearer understanding of the Tasmanian flora. -

Western Australia. Flora Yalgorup National Park Methods The principal author has been working on compiling a list of the flora of the Yalgorup National Park for 30 years beginning in the late 1970s. This work was progressed in a series of studies including the Southern Swan Coastal Plain floristic study ( Gibson et al. 1994), Conservation Status of Vascular Flora of the Southern Swan Coastal Plain (GJ Keighery 1999) and work by the Wildflower Society and the Department of Environment and Conservation in 2007. A current study on the flora and vegetation values of the area from Dawesville to Biningup has contributed to the databasing of the information collected over this period. Flora A total of 650 taxa, 515 native taxa and 135 weeds are listed for the Yalgorup National Park (Table 1). Information on a variety of species attributes is listed alongside the taxa in Table 1. These attributes include: • significant flora; • endemic status; • growth form; • life form; and • aquatic species. These attributes are described in the key to Appendix XX and in the Perth Region Plant Biodiversity Project (PRPBP) section of the Western Australian Local Government Association’s (WALGA) Perth Biodiversity Project website (DoE et al. 2006). Significant Flora When taxa are considered according to conservation status (see Table 1 Key for categories), over 100 (106) are considered significant flora in the Park (Table 1). Of these, 2 are listed as DRF and 12 are listed as priority taxa: one Priority 1, two Priority 2, six Priority 3 and three Priority 4. -

There are eight major conservation reserves which have 1559 taxa present in them. Most of the 574 unreserved taxa are wetland taxa, taxa of tropical affinities or those only present on the Acacia shrublands of the central basin. Vegetation patterning at a regional scale showed the major floristic boundary in the south west of the study area, which in turn reflected the major climatic gradients of the area.
