TRAVESSIAS DO “BARCO NEGRO” – O SEQUESTRO DA MÃE NEGRA Osmar Pereira Oliva1 RESUMO: Este ensaio pretende discutir a composição do batuque “Mãe Preta”, de Caco Velho (Mateus Nunes) e Piratini (António Amábile), interpretada como fado português por Amália Rodrigues, a partir de poema de David Mourão-Ferreira, no filme “Les Amants du Tâge”. Método: As discussões tiveram como base os estudos realizados por Carlos Sandroni (2001), Nei Lopes (2003), Maurício Barros de Castro e Alexandre Felipe Fiuza sobre as origens do batuque e do samba. Trata-se, portanto, de um estudo comparado entre música e poema, passando também pela questão da autoria. Resultados e conclusões do trabalho: A ditadura salazarista impediu interpretações da música brasileira com a temática da escravidão, o que levou à modificação temática do batuque, substituindo o canto de lamento da escrava pelo lamento de despedida de uma mulher que acompanha, da praia, a partida do seu amado, na composição portuguesa. Palavras-chave: batuque, fado, “Mãe Preta” ABSTRACT: This essay discusses the composition of samba "Black Mother" by Caco Velho (Mateus Nunes) and Piratini (António Amábile), played as Portuguese fado by Amalia Rodrigues, from poem by David Mourão-Ferreira, in the film “Les amants du Tâge”. Method: The discussions were based on the studies by por Carlos Sandroni (2001), Nei Lopes (2003), Maurício Barros de Castro e Alexandre Felipe about the origins of samba. This is a comparative study between authorship and composition in Brazilian music and Portuguese fado. Results and conclusions of the work: The Salazar dictatorship prevented interpretations of Brazilian music with the theme of slavery, contributing to the forgetfulness of the original lyrics. -

The Nature of Portuguese Cinema: Environment on the Silver Screen PATRÍCIA VIEIRA Georgetown University Abstract: This article analyzes the representation of nature in Portuguese cinema from the silent era to contemporary productions. I argue that cinematic depictions of the environment reflect the socio-economic and political changes Portugal went through in the past century. Early films showcased natural beauty, together with local traditions, and created what I define as a “domesticated natural sublime.” Estado Novo filmography portrayed nature as a godlike entity that could both be the source of adversity and a loving, nurturing mother and presented authority figures as instantiations of this powerful force. Salazarist films also praised the countryside to the detriment of city life, a dichotomous view of the environment that continued in movies from the democratic period. In more recent work, we witness the development of an ecological consciousness, as films meditate upon the relation between humanity and the environment in late modernity. Keywords: Regionalism; domesticated natural sublime; environmentalism; ecology Nature inconspicuously creeps into film, insinuating itself into a shot, framing a sequence and ultimately coloring the entire movie as the backdrop for human action. Unlike literary works, where descriptions are optional, cinema cannot but depict the landscape—the sky, the sea or a mountain, plants and animals— 112 Journal of Lusophone Studies 2.1 (Spring 2017) as the background for events captured by the lens.1 Often out of focus, decorating the edges of the frame where humans take center stage, the representation of natural elements in many cinematic productions is symptomatic of a widespread attitude towards the environment, which is taken for granted as décor or as a commodity that is and always will be simply there, ready for human appropriation. -

CHAPTER 2 ‘From the night and the light, all festivals are golden’: The festivalization of culture in the late modernity1,2 Paula Guerra Abstract Festivals have been stated as important forms of social and cultural participation. In the twenty‐first century, all countries have been faced with a number of annual2 festivals, but also by diversifying the type of festivals, its location and its audiences. The festival model has expanded all over the world and became globalize. With this model emerged the so‐ called ‘festivalization of culture’. Portugal was no different in this phenomenon. The main purpose of this chapter is to explore the Portuguese festival dynamics. These dynamics have the function of globalization coding, marketing and culture of media coverage, mobilizing thousands of actors on the supply side, in mediation and on the demand side. There are several elements that prove this in Portugal: unprecedented evolution in the number of festivals over the past two decades; the spread of festivals around the country, especially in its Atlantic coast and in metropolitan areas; the exponential increase of the habitués; the weight of the turnover of the festivals in the statement of accounts culture and cultural industries; the importance of festivals for the launch and projection of the bands; and, above all, the design of a new way of life in an environment marked by consumptions, appropriations and embodiments of practices, associated with experience and sociability of the festival. 1 This chapter result of an intensive research carried out since 2005, anchored in three projects. The first, developed between 2005 and 2009, Urban cultures and youth lifestyles: Scenery, sounds and aesthetic in contemporary Portuguese (SFRH / BD / 24614/2005), at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS‐UP), coordinated by the author of this article and funded by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). -

Australian Journal of Adult Learning Volume 55, Number 3, November 2015 Protest music as adult education and learning for social change: a theorisation of a public pedagogy of protest music John Haycock Monash University Since the 1960’s, the transformative power of protest music has been shrouded in mythology. Sown by musical activists like Pete Seeger, who declared that protest music could “help to save the planet”, the seeds of this myth have since taken deep root in the popular imagination. While the mythology surrounding the relationship between protest music and social change has become pervasive and persistent, it has mostly evaded critical interrogation and significant theorisation. By both using the notion as a theoretical lens and adding to scholarship in the field, this article uncovers understandings of the public pedagogical dimensions of protest music, as it takes place as a radical practice and critical form of contemporary mass culture. In doing this, this article provides a theorisation of public pedagogy as it encapsulates protest music, and those who are conceptualised as the critical and radical public pedagogues who produce this mass cultural form. King Original 45rpm Leiber and Stoller It started with a simple chord progression, one that had appeared in hundreds of soul and doo- wop songs already but that was used here with such effective grace that it came to be known as the “’Stand By Me’ changes.” That chord progression inspired the iconic bass line that begins the song, accompanied only by a triangle and a brush scraped lightly across the base of a snare drum. And when Ben E. King’s passionate, gospel-flavored tenor joined that simple introduction, the world sat up and took notice. Of course, this is none other than the timeless “Stand By Me,” a song that has touched millions of people’s hearts since it was recorded and released in 1961. A seamless combination of gospel and doo-wop, a love song, a protest anthem, a declaration of enduring friendship, a worship song --this incredible composition is all of these and more. In 1960, King was already a star. His band, the Drifters, had recently scored their first number- one hit with “Save the Last Dance for Me,” thanks in part to King’s heavenly tenor voice. However, due to a contract dispute, King left the Drifters just as they were picking up momentum. After he convinced Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records to let him have a shot at a solo career, Wexler put King in touch with none other than Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. -

Revista Portuguesa de Musicologia 6, Lisboa, 1996, pp. 141-171 Sons de Abril: estilos musicais e movimentos de intervenção político-cultural na Revolução de 19741 MARIA DE SÃO ]OSÉ CORTE-REAL STE artigo consiste numa reflexão sobre o fenómeno «Sons Ede Abril», definindo-o numa perspectiva de relacionamento entre estilos musicais e movimentos de intervenção político• cultural associados à Revolução de 1974. Partindo de um corpus de música seleccionado de entre o vasto repertório designado correntemente por «música de intervenção» e «música popular portuguesa»/ foram consideradas três situações de relevância social, fortemente interligadas e concorrentes para a definição do fenómeno em estudo: o desenvolvimento político em Portugal sob o regime ditatorial marcadamente autoritário, a Guerra Colonial que mobilizou massivamente a geração da década de sessenta e a consequente fuga para o estrangeiro, nomeadamente para Paris, que tal como outros centros urbanos, albergou a juventude exilada de Portugal. Cada uma destas situações exerceu influências marcantes no desenvolvimento da cultura expressiva em geral e da música em particular em Portugal. A influência de compositores e intérpretes franceses, assim como o trabalho pontual de algumas editoras discográficas foram de importância capital no domínio da canção de intervenção em Portugal. Necessariamente, muitos compositores e intérpretes, assim como obras de relevo ficarão por citar. A inexistência de um estudo sistemático sobre esta matéria revela uma lacuna no conhecimento da cultura expressiva recente em Portugal. O texto original deste artigo foi apresentado numa conferência interactiva realizada na Fonoteca Municipal de Lisboa em 1995, integrada nas comemorações do 21.0 aniversário da Revolução de 1974. Ainda que adaptado ao novo suporte, a sua redução ao formato escrito acarreta necessariamente a amputação de um amplo leque de referências inerentes ao desempenho musical característico dos «Sons de Abril». -

It is a means for people to express dissatisfaction with current situations and assert demands for social, political, and economic change. Protests make change happen and throughout the course of United States history it has taken sustained protests over long periods of time to bring about substantive change in governmental policies and the lives of people. Protest takes political courage as well, the focal point of Standard 4.11 in this book. The United States emerged from American protests against England’s colonial rule. Founded in 1765, the Sons of Liberty and the Daughters of Liberty organized protests against what they considered to be unfair British laws. In 1770, the Boston Massacre happened when British troops fired on protestors. Then, there was the Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773) when 60 Massachusetts colonists dumped 342 chests of tea—enough to make 19 million cups—into Boston Harbor. Stand Up, Sing Out: The Contemporary Relevance of Protest Song Aileen Dillane, Martin J. Power, Amanda Haynes and Eoin Devereux Sound is an integral part of protest, and singing is a way for ordinary people, as well as amateur or professional musicians, to sonorously raise their voices in an appeal for justice. The intimate and sensuous activity of singing, in solo form or as part of a collective, has a power and persuasiveness beyond mere rhetoric. Because of music’s ubiquity, its presence in all cultures, and its fundamental ownership by all human beings, it is a medium and a performance act that is essentially recognisable, familiar, and translatable; therefore, it has the potential to reach across social and political divides, or, at the very least, reveal our shared humanity. Music, of course, is not intrinsically good or inherently utopian, even if, in making music – in musiking - people celebrate not only who they are, but also often who they hope to become (Small 1998: xi). Like any medium, music can be used for malign propaganda purposes. It can disinform, it can proselytise, it can incite, and it can exclude; singers, song texts and performance activities may, in fact, be part of the very systems that reproduce oppressive structures and behaviours (Turino 2008). But when singing is mobilized in order to counter injustice, to challenge inequality, to rise above hate and fear, to appeal against the normalisation of bigotry, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and a myriad of other anti-democratic, anti-human practices, then the power of song is revealed as affective, persuasive, ethical and hopeful. -

Desde a sua origem e implementação como indústria que a música portuguesa tem apresentado dificuldades de se internacionalizar. Se tal se deve, em grande parte, ao isolamento a que o país esteve sujeito durante o regime do Estado Novo, a situação pouco se alterou com a revolução de 25 de abril de 1974. Era suposto que o surgimento do digital, aliado a novas tecnologias de divulgação e partilha e a menores custos de produção alterassem a situação. No entanto, num mundo cada vez mais globalizado, Portugal parece continuar a padecer do isolamento e da sua condição geograficamente periférica. O que verdadeiramente acontece é que, o verdadeiro problema, hoje e sempre, reside na falta de apoios e de estruturas profissionais que permitam alavancar a música portuguesa no seu processo de internacionalização e exportação como um bem consumível, gerador de emprego e de retorno económico.
