Paper can be deteriorated due to physical, chemical and biological agents. Within microorganisms, fungi are the major paper biodeteriogens. Throughout history, several toxic methods have been used to prevent and stop fungal deterioration on paper based materials. More recently, a growing concern about environmental and health issues has led to the research on new antifungal alternatives, with lower toxicity. However, the existent antifungal methods and compounds still have drawbacks in terms of efficacy, health hazards, damaging effects on paper, or lack of thorough testing. In this context, the present thesis focused on testing and developing accessible antifungal treatments with low toxicity, which could prevent the long term paper deterioration. The selection of antifungal compounds was made taking into account the results from a literature review on antifungals used on paper conservation, a survey to paper conservators, and a review of antifungals used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, having as a basic premise their low toxicity. Aspergillus niger, Chaetomium globosum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium corylophilum were selected as test fungal species. Fungal growth on paper was evaluated by measuring colonization areas and biomass dry weight determination. A formulation containing parabens and calcium propionate (PBs+CP) presented the best antifungal activity on paper samples, followed by a formulation containing clotrimazole and calcium hydroxide nanoparticles (CLT+NPs), and ultimately 70% ethanol (70%EtOH). That expresses in a few words the variety of products produced by the leading industry in the Kalamazoo River Valley. The truth of the slogan is revealed in the variety of papers manufactured: rag bonds, both ledger and writing; sulphite bond—coated and uncoated book, sulphite bristol, postage stamp paper, and greeting card paper; tissue and wrapping paper, box board, ice cream carton board, and butter carton board; playing card stock, and some specialties. Rank of Michigan in the Paper Industry of the United States The manufacturing of paper and allied products in the United States is a huge industry. The value added by manufacturing in 1947 totaled $2,874,958. Employment was provided for 449,833 employees. Paper and allied products ranked tenth among the industries of the United States in 1947; it was outranked by such industries as food, tex- 1 tiles, machinery, and iron and steel. In 1947 Michigan ranked fourth in terms of value added by manu- facturing and sixth in employment. In that year 26,022 persons were employed in paper and allied products mills in Michigan against 65,026 persons for New York, 28,144 persons for Wisconsin, and 31,674 persons for Ohio. In 1947 value added by manufacturing in the paper and allied products industry in Michigan amounted to 174 million dollars while that of New York was 232 million dollars and that of Wisconsin was 188 million dollars.

Pitt and John W. Taylor, CSIRO Food and Nutrition, North Ryde, NSW 2113, Australia and Dept of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-3102, USA Preamble The lists below set out the nomenclature of Aspergillus and its teleomorphs as they would become on acceptance of a proposal published by Pitt and Taylor (2014) to change the type species of Aspergillus from A. glaucus to A. niger. The central points of the proposal by Pitt and Taylor (2014) are that retypification of Aspergillus on A. niger will make the classification of fungi with Aspergillus anamorphs: i) reflect the great phenotypic diversity in sexual morphology, physiology and ecology of the clades whose species have Aspergillus anamorphs; ii) respect the phylogenetic relationship of these clades to each other and to Penicillium; and iii) preserve the name Aspergillus for the clade that contains the greatest number of economically important species. Specifically, of the 11 teleomorph genera associated with Aspergillus anamorphs, the proposal of Pitt and Taylor (2014) maintains the three major teleomorph genera – Eurotium, Neosartorya and Emericella – together with Chaetosartorya, Hemicarpenteles, Sclerocleista and Warcupiella. Aspergillus is maintained for the important species used industrially and for manufacture of fermented foods, together with all species producing major mycotoxins. The teleomorph genera Fennellia, Petromyces, Neocarpenteles and Neopetromyces are synonymised with Aspergillus. The lists below are based on the List of “Names in Current Use” developed by Pitt and Samson (1993) and those listed in MycoBank (www.MycoBank.org), plus extensive scrutiny of papers publishing new species of Aspergillus and associated teleomorph genera as collected in Index of Fungi (1992-2104).

Species of Aspergillus and their sexual states, Emericella, Eurotium, and Neosartorya, were isolated from soil or collected on natural substrata in Santa Rosa National Park in northwestern Costa Rica. Fungi were recovered by soil dilution plating, direct plating of soil on cyclosporine-containing media and direct plating on media used to recover osmotolerant and osmophilic fungi. We examined their distribution in soils collected at I-km intervals along an Il-kilometer transect on the Santa Elena Peninsula. A large and diverse group of Aspergillus species were isolated. Nine or more species were found at more than half of the sampling points along the transect. Some of the same species described from Costa Rica by Raper and Fennell were also recovered in this study. In addition to morphological identification, representatives of all Aspergillus species were subjected to DNA sequencing using the ITSI-5.8S-ITS2 regions and the 28S 01-02 regions. Sequencing selected regions of ribosomal DNA were an effective technique in the identification of Aspergillus.
