    P o n t o n e G A L L E R Y Emil Alzamora, a British Citizen, was born in Lima, Peru in 1975 and grew up in Boca Grande, Florida and Majorca, Spain. Now living EMIL ALZAMORA and working in Beacon, NY, Alzamora started his sculpting career in the Hudson Valley of New York working with Polich Tallix in the fall of 1998 and, since 2001, has produced his work full-time and shown regularly throughout the world. His minimalist sculptures harness a wide range of materials to represent the human body in its purest form. He often distorts, elongates, deconstructs, or encases his forms to reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell captivating stories. His keen interest in the physical properties of his materials combined with (above left) Gullfoss his hands-on approach allow for the process to reveal and inform at once Bronze, Edition of 3 + 2 AP the aesthetic and the conceptual. In his sculptures, Alzamora strives to 97 x 38 x 71 cm (38 x 15 x 28 in) makes visible the intangible interaction between limitation and potential 2015 within the human form. Dabei macht es ein Angebot zum produktiven Missverstehen und zeigt künstlerische Positionen, die auf unsere blinden Flecken und Unbeweglichkeiten abzielen. Es lässt unter anderem die Republik Korea, stellvertretend für das stark als das „andere“ stilisierte Asien an den Rändern westlicher und asiatischer Kultur in Bildern und Strategien aufeinander treffen und adressiert Fremdheitserfahrungen und Übersetzungsfehler ebenso wie produktiven Kulturtransfer. Das Stolpern zwischen den vermeintlichen klaren Diskrepanzen ist der Raum der Annäherung, das Gefühl am jeweils anderen immer wieder ein klein wenig zu scheitern, sich nicht vollständig verständig machen zu können und einer unbekannten Größe ausgeliefert zu sein und es nicht recht beherrschen zu können, hat Potenzial. Das Filmprogramm zeigt native koreanische Positionen in und aus dem geografischen Ostasien oder mit Bezug darauf. Dabei liegt der gewählte Fokus abseits gegenwärtiger Verständnisse von Internationalität und Nationalität auf den Unschärfen und Rändern dieser Konstruktionen. In ausgewählten filmischen Bearbeitungen zeigen sich produktive Verhandlungsflächen zwischen gewohntem westlichen Blick, asiatischen Selbstverständnissen und den Bildern in Überlagerung dazwischen. Projektionen, Ängste, Hoffnungen, Wahrscheinlichkeiten und Unwahrscheinlichkeiten zeigen sich in ihren Interferenz-Zonen. Gezeigt werden filmische Arbeiten an ökonomischen, politischen ebenso wie gesellschaftlichen Widersprüchlichkeiten, die den gewohnten Blick prüfen lassen und ein Leben nach Identitätspolitik und Hyperidentifikation in den Blick nehmen.

    2 3 Contemporary Asian American Drama Esther Kim Lee Introduction: The First Wave In 1968, the East West Players in Los Angeles held its fi rst playwriting competi- tion to encourage Asian Americans to write for theater. Founded in 1965, the East West Players originally aimed to promote the careers of Asian American actors, but it became clear that without original plays by and about Asian Americans the company would not last.1 In the 1960s, playwriting was not per- ceived as a possible profession for Asian American writers, and Asian American plays were virtually nonexistent. Plays, by defi nition, need to be produced and staged, and playwrights must work within an infrastructure and industry of theater. The East West Players’ playwriting competition lasted three years during which playwrights such as Momoko Iko and Frank Chin made their debut in theater. In 1973, Frank Chin led the founding of the Asian American Theatre Workshop (later renamed Asian American Theatre Company) in San Francisco with the explicit agenda to create and produce Asian American plays. Although Chin left the company in a few years, his infl uence as a play- wright has been lasting in Asian American theater. His two published plays, Chickencoop Chinaman (1972) and The Year of the Dragon (1974), are considered foundational in Asian American drama, and the Asian American Theatre Company has continued to support new Asian American playwrights. 2 Frank Chin belongs to the fi rst wave Asian American playwrights who pio- neered Asian American drama. Also in the fi rst wave are Jon Shirota, Momoko Iko, Dom Magwili, Wakako Yamauchi, Karen Tei Yamashita, Perry Miyake, Bill Shinkai, Paul Stephen Lim, Jeff ery Paul Chan, Garrett Hongo, and Edward Sakamoto.

Since graduating he has exhibited many times in the Far East, the USA and Europe and his work features in several international collections. The work takes the form of sculptural constructions, mostly wall based reliefs, (although some pieces are free-standing). Sequences of elastic cords are (above left) printed with photographic images and stretched over canvasses or within Perceptual mirror 0711 steel frames. These images, from a distance, look entire. However, on closer LCD solar units inspection, they become increasingly fragmented and fugitive, as the viewer 73 x 73 x 3 cm (x4) becomes more and more aware of their mode of fabrication. A tension arises 2017 out of this rupture of the perception of pictorial flatness. (above right) The images are of arms and hands grasping, holding and intertwining, Strings 0473 sometimes manipulating a string of beads or a wad of paper. There is an Mixed Media emphasis on intimacy in their depiction of mutual touch and interrelation. The 120 x 120 x 15 cm (47 x 47 x 6 in) nature of the construction disrupts this and makes reference to the artist’s 2016 wish to ‘reanimate communication’; the disruption makes us take notice.

Lee Soo Hyuck Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the United States 2450 Massachusetts Ave. NW Washington, DC 20008 Re: Letter to President Moon Jae In Regarding Religious Persecution in South Korea Dear Sir: Jubilee Campaign is a non-profit organization that advocates for international religious freedom and human rights by collaborating with other faith-based organizations, engaging in various United Nations mechanisms, drafting reports on persecution and right violations around the world, and holding events to raise the voice of disenfranchised communities who face discrimination and persecution on account of their ethnicity, religious affiliation, and gender. Our organization has worked with your government for decades to combat human rights violations suffered by North Koreans. However, it has come to our attention — and it concerns us greatly — that in recent months during the pandemic, your government has taken steps to curb the religious freedom and worship practices of Protestant communities, while simultaneously releasing public statements harshly censuring these specific communities for their political activities as well. In contrast, your government has directed no similar rebuke towards secular events and public locations that have drawn the presence of thousands of religiously unaffiliated individuals. This obvious double standard suggests that your government unreasonably places full blame on Protestant communities for the spread of COVID-19 in South Korea without scientific evidence to prove these claims, and in spite of the fact that outbreaks of the novel coronavirus have been linked to various other secular activities throughout Korea. In light of this observable increase in religious persecution and scapegoating by your government, which has also been propagated via traditional new and social media outlets, we have written the following letter outlining our concerns and the implications of such persecution and blame on social cohesion and religious liberty in South Korea.
