This study takes a first step towards understanding this impact. It embarks upon a reading of La Pratique de la joie devant la mort as a record of Bataille’s meditation practice infused with Tibetan and Japanese Zen Buddhist concepts and practices as he understood them, through the prisms of European interactions therewith. -

Tibetan Buddhism and Feminism in an In-Between Space
Tibetan Buddhism and Feminism in an In-between Space: A Creative-Critical Autoethnography in a Non-Western Woman’s Voice Sharin Shajahan Naomi Student ID: 32114843 This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 30th June, 2017 This page intentionally left blank 2 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work, which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. ………… Sharin Shajahan Naomi 3 This page intentionally left blank 4 This page intentionally left blank 5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I always wanted to do PhD. on a subject with which I would find a spontaneous connection. I believe in the power of prayer. It is through the earnest prayer I am able to create intimate bonding with the divine, which is unseen and incomprehensible, yet the most intimate, the most understanding, and the kindest friend. God’s guidance and help come in simple ways; through friends, mentors and unknown strangers from whom I never expect help. That is the grace and beauty of trusting God and asking for his/her help. When I finally decided to do a PhD on Tibetan Buddhism and feminism, the help and guidance I received were incredible and beyond expectations. I am confused about where to start and whose name should appear first in my acknowledgment. Let’s go back to 2010 when I received an Australian Leadership Award and began a new life in Western Australia. I was studying for a Masters of Arts in Human Rights and it was at that time I began to dream of doing a PhD. -

Electing Citizens and Aliens: a Theology of Migration, Borders, And
Electing Citizens and Aliens: A Theology of Migration, Borders, and Belonging by Justin Parrish Ashworth Date: __________________ Approved: _______________________ Prof. Willie J. Jennings, Supervisor _______________________ Prof. Stanley Hauerwas _______________________ Prof. Edgardo Colón-Emeric _______________________ Prof. Walter D. Mignolo _______________________ Prof. Leo R. Chavez Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology in the Divinity School of Duke University 2015 Copyright by Justin Parrish Ashworth 2015 Abstract This work offers a theological reading of and response to migration restrictions in the United States of America, focusing on their instantiation in the U.S.-Mexico border and on the discourses and practices of citizenship and alienage that support these arrangements. Unlike most works in Christian immigration ethics, this work not only highlights the negative effects of migration policies, but also unearths the basic assumptions grounding these policies, all while displaying the racial and theological imaginaries grounding them. The first part of this work argues that the assumption grounding all migration policies is “the preferential option for one’s own people,” that is, the view that citizens not only may but must prefer or prioritize the life of fellow citizens over that of non- citizens. The first chapter draws on French theorist Michel Foucault and decolonial intellectuals to offer a reading of three non-theological arguments for migration restrictions, namely, security, economics, and culture. In short, those who believe the U.S. must have migration restrictions believe that aliens may threaten the security, economy, and culture—that is, the life—of citizens. The second chapter interrogates theological arguments for national borders, the most visible way of restricting migration, showing that ultimately theologians assume and assert the legitimacy of Westphalian nation-state sovereignty. -
THE DIVINE PERFECTION of OMNIPRESENCE in the THEOLOGY of KARL BARTH the Reverend Elizabeth Jarrell
A THEOLOGY OF SPATIALITY: THE DIVINE PERFECTION OF OMNIPRESENCE IN THE THEOLOGY OF KARL BARTH The Reverend Elizabeth Jarrell Callender A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. 1 July 2011 Abstract Throughout its history, the Christian Church has commonly assumed that God’s own being or nature is the opposite of ours. Human existence is conditioned by the spatial and temporal order of creation, so God is thought to be a-spatial and eternal. Yet this does not account adequately for the biblical witness concerning God. Karl Barth radically claims that God is not merely spatial but that God has His own space and even is His own space. Barth bases this assertion upon an actualistic epistemology instead of the metaphysical framework grounding much of the Christian Church’s conceptualizations of God. Barth defines spatiality as a characteristic way of lovingly and freely being personally present with another distinct being in a rightly ordered relation. Beyond the discussion on the perfection of omnipresence, Barth does not directly develop this perfection further. However, his theology of spatiality underlies much of his theology, evident in his use of spatial language. Additionally, apparently lacking in Barth studies or elsewhere is a comprehensive theology of space or spatiality that begins by concretely considering God’s own space and His perfection of spatiality. This thesis aims to develop an actualistic theology of spatiality through an expositional exploration of the spatiality of the triune God in the theology of Karl Barth, primarily from his Church Dogmatics. -
