This study aims to understand the perspective of gender equality on Islamic marriage sermon through framing analysis. This study used framing analysis to reveals the frame of a text by using framing devices that are directly related to the central idea of the text and reasoning. The devices are associated with the cohesion and coherence of the text that refer to a particular idea of marriage. Islamic sermons such as text still tend to show discriminatory for example, this can be felt in the reproduction of a sentences like this: such as sentence “the ideal family is where the husband and wife make a living for their household, especially by giving love and education to children”. The word “ideal” or “good” is a framing device. And the phrase, “if the wife works outside the home, the family will lose orientation”. The word “disoriented” indicates that family whose wife works outside of the house is a failed family. In this case, the wife is used as a scapegoat for the failure of a family as a wife who works outside. In addition, Cheng Ho mosque is also beginning to be understood as the “new silk road”, because it assumed that it has an important role in fostering a harmonious relationship between the Indonesian government and China. It can be seen from the establishment of Cheng Ho mosques in a number of regions in Indonesia. In this context, this article describes what the contributions and implications of the Cheng Ho mosque as the new silk road in fostering bilateral relations between Indonesia and China, especially in Islamic cultural identity. By looking at these legends in the current context, this article re-reads the figure of a legend who was always attached to this figure of Cheng Ho as a reflection of the stereotypical perception of Javanese people towards the Chinese in relation to Islam and Java (Indonesia). An image that existed long ago until now, namely as a creature full of paradox and ambiguity: from being admired and respected to being hated and reviled. This article was closed with a reflection of the relations between China, Islam and Java during the Post Reformation which represented Cheng Ho as the carrier of peaceful Islam.

  • Islamic Imaginary Homelands of Chinese-Indonesian Muslims in East Java
Chapter 12 Building Traditions for Bridging Differences: Islamic Imaginary Homelands of Chinese-Indonesian Muslims in East Java Chiou Syuan-yuan Introduction In Indonesia, the ethnic Chinese minority have been regarded for a long time as an alien segment of the indigenous Indonesian culture. The labels of ‘Chinese’ and ‘Muslim’ have been seen as mutually exclusive. Despite this perception, the rst Chinese Muslim organization in Indo- nesia was established in the 1930s. After independence, an Islamic da’wah (mission) movement aimed at Chinese Indonesians was initiated in the 1960s by the Association of Chinese Muslims of Indonesia (Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia, PITI).1 In 2003, the regional PITI of East Java (PITIEJ) based in Surabaya built a mosque in the Chinese style. The mosque was named Cheng Ho (or Zheng He)2 to commemorate Cheng Ho’s great voyage and his contribution to the spread of Islam in Indonesia. If there is no direct relation between the Chinese Hui Muslims and the Chinese-Indonesian Muslims, then why did the PITIEJ link its own Islamic tradition to the Chinese Hui Muslims by promoting the history of Cheng Ho and building a mosque in the Chinese style? By building the Cheng Ho Mosque, the Chinese-Indonesian Muslims of the PITIEJ have created an alternative socio-religious space, empowering themselves to improve ethnic relations between the Chinese-Indonesian minority and the indigenous Muslim majority after the downfall of President Suharto. Through the ingenious Cheng Ho mosque, an invented Islamic tradi- tion of PITIEJ simultaneously articulates a discourse of religio-cultural intimacy between Chinese and Indonesian Islam, and appropriates 1 The PITI, combined with two Chinese-Indonesian Muslim organizations, was established in Jakarta in 1961.
