ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS and DEVELOPMENT Residential areas with deficient access to urban parks in Bucharest – priority areas for urban rehabilitation CRISTIAN IOJA, MARIA PATROESCU, LIDIA NICULITA, GABRIELA PAVELESCU, MIHAI NITA, ANNEMARIE IOJA Centre for Environmental Research and Impact Studies, University of Bucharest 1 Nicolae Balcescu Blvd., Sector 1, Bucharest, ROMANIA Abstract: - The paper emphasizes the real dimension of the urban parks surfaces deficit upon the built environment in Bucharest city. There were established residential area categories with deficient access to urban parks of high quality, considered to be priority intervention areas for urban rehabilitation (residential areas situated at more than 3 km from municipal importance parks, at more than 1 km from urban parks, residential areas with access to crowded parks, or with access to parks that have degraded endowments). Deficient access to Bucharest urban parks was correlated with the development projects of new residential quarters, being obviously the tendency of city suffocation under the pressure of constructed surfaces and agglomeration. Key-Words: - urban parks, residential areas, housing, Bucharest, rehabilitation priorities areas 1 Introduction residential areas was completed by a tendency of Green spaces represent an essential component in vertical development, initially through 4 floors large urban environments, to which they offer constru-ctions, then 9 and 10 floors, in the present numerous direct and indirect services (improving reaching 20 floors. These new residential surfaces environmental quality, recreation and leisure, accentuated the real deficit of public green spaces. climate amelioration etc.) [1], [2], [3]. Green spaces deficit is expressed through the degradation of housing conditions in urban environments [1], [2], [3], automatically determining an increase of housing costs [4], a degradation of the population’s health state [5], [6] and the appearance of social segregation problems [7], [8].

  • Long-Term Ground Deformation Patterns of Bucharest Using
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Long-term ground deformation patterns of Bucharest using multi- temporal InSAR and multivariate Received: 02 February 2016 Accepted: 27 January 2017 dynamic analyses: a possible Published: 02 March 2017 transpressional system? Iuliana Armaş1, Diana A. Mendes2, Răzvan-Gabriel Popa3, Mihaela Gheorghe4 & Diana Popovici1 The aim of this exploratory research is to capture spatial evolution patterns in the Bucharest metropolitan area using sets of single polarised synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data and multi- temporal radar interferometry. Three sets of SAR data acquired during the years 1992–2010 from ERS- 1/-2 and ENVISAT, and 2011–2014 from TerraSAR-X satellites were used in conjunction with the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) and persistent scatterers (PS) high-resolution multi-temporal interferometry (InSAR) techniques to provide maps of line-of-sight displacements. The satellite-based remote sensing results were combined with results derived from classical methodologies (i.e., diachronic cartography) and field research to study possible trends in developments over former clay pits, landfill excavation sites, and industrial parks. The ground displacement trend patterns were analysed using several linear and nonlinear models, and techniques. Trends based on the estimated ground displacement are characterised by long-term memory, indicated by low noise Hurst exponents, which in the long-term form interesting attractors. We hypothesize these attractors to be tectonic stress fields generated by transpressional movements. At present, when global environments are increasingly becoming urbanised, sustainable growth and development should be based on a good understanding of the long-term ground displacement dynamics. The issue of ground displacements in urban areas is of great importance for the development of cities, due to possible instabilities induced by subsidence and uplift.

  • Romania 578 Romania Romania
ROMANIA 578 ROMANIA ROMANIA 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. General Overview Romania is a unitary republic in south-eastern of Central Europe, in the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula, halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ural Mountains, being placed at a distance ranging between 1050 km and 2800 km against the continent extremities. The country is bordered by Hungary (west), Serbia (south-west) , Bulgaria (south), Ukraine (north), Moldavia (north- east) and the Black Sea (east), along 245 km of coastline. The country covers an area of 238,391 square kilometres and is the continent’s 13th largest country in area. Romania's topography is dominated by the great arch of the Carpathian Mountains, which enter northern Romania via Ukraine and take a curving course, first south-eastward and then westward across the central part of the country. The Carpathians then turn south again and cross the lower course of the Danube River, which forms Romania's southern boundary with Bulgaria. The southern and eastern portions of Romania consist of fertile plains that are drained by the Danube and its tributaries. The Carpathians in Romania may be divided into the Eastern Carpathians, the Southern Carpathians (or the Transylvanian Alps), and the Western Carpathians. The highest point in Romania is the peak of Moldoveanu (2,544 m) in the Southern Carpathians. Main features of relief units are: · proportionality (31% mountains, 36% Sub-Carpathians, hills and plateaux, 33% plains, meadows and Danube Delta). · concentric display, in amphitheatre (The three ranges, the major levels, with an average elevation of 800 m, form a semicircle, open to the west through structural depressions ("gates"), that shelters the tableland of the Transylvanian Basin in the central part of the country.
