Volgens Hoppenstand en Browne (1987) richt King zijn werk voornamelijk op ‘the foundation of the paperback mass market: women and adolescents’ (p. 5). Hij benadrukt bijvoorbeeld dat ‘During the 520 weeks from August 1976 through July 1986, King’s name appears at least 545 times – for an unprecendented average of 1.05 titles per week for a full ten years. A decade later, after 1030 weeks since the paperback edition of ´Salem’s Lot first hit the lists, he has had a total of 1,097 entries for a twenty-year average of 1.065 titles per week.’ Tacey (25 juni 2014) beweert bijvoorbeeld dat ‘There is no such thing as a mature puer. The puer never grows up.’ Samuels (26 juni 2014) breidt Tacey’s argument verder uit. Hij beweert namelijk dat de puer aeternus zich niet leent voor een interpretatie vanuit de psychologische ontwikkeling; ‘developmental schemas are not relevant. These things are as they are.’

  • A Face of Horror in Stephen King's Carrie
Journal of Scientific Computing ISSN NO: 1524-2560 A Face of Horror in Stephen King’s Carrie 1#Dr. SUDHIR V. NIKAM, Head, PG Department of English B.N.N.College, Bhiwandi, Mumbai 2*Mr. RAJKIRAN J. BIRAJE, Shri Shahaji Chhatrapati Mahavidyala, Dasara Chowk, Kolhapur. PhD scholar ( Mumbai University) Modern horror fiction would not be complete without the landmark works and ideas of author Stephen King. When someone thinks of Stephen King, the most popular horror fiction author of the century, it is likely that they would imagine the blood, gore, supernatural elements and suspense for which he is known. The present research paper has purpose to introspect the formula of horror applied in the novel Carrie. It is hard to believe in living in an old orthodox ultra-religious family in a progressive world. Even a sane and rational being would suffer if he is thrown or grown up in such a fanatic family. This is exactly what Stephen King portrays in Carrie. A serious of unfortunate events in the past deeply traumatizes Carrie psychologically and results in Carrie turning into the monster figure of the story. In horror fiction at least one character is given a supernatural power and Carrie falls under this category through the character Carrie white. The relationship between normality and the monster is the key element in every horror story and this is what we can experience in this novel. This paper also talks about anxiety theories made by Freudian and these are reality anxiety and moral anxiety through the characters Carrie and Margaret.

  • The Horror of the Failed Female Hero's Journey in Carrie And
Monstrous Journeys: The Horror of the Failed Female Hero’s Journey in Carrie and Ginger Snaps Rebecca Sterling CSUSM Fall 2017 Sterling 1 Introduction One of the most common tropes that permeates the Horror genre is the depiction of women as monsters. Horror films and novels depict women as victims of possession, wielders of dark powers, and villainous hags. In my thesis I focus on the representation of adolescent, menstruating women in the horror genre, using two contemporary texts from North America. My chosen texts are works that overtly depict menstruation and puberty: Stephen King’s Carrie and John Fawcett’s Ginger Snaps. In Carrie and Ginger Snaps, both title characters experience traumatic menarches that lead them to horrific journeys. Both Ginger and Carrie become monsters because of their unusual puberty, which prevents them from becoming part of a female community and finding a place of belonging. Instead of joining groups of likeminded women, Ginger and Carrie eliminate the communities around them; their monstrosity is so destructive that their failures result in the failures of the women around them. The representation of menstrual women in horror suggests that those who do not menstruate normally are ultimately doomed to become outsiders and fail their hero’s journeys, which implies to audiences that there is a “normal” way to menstruate and that women who do not menstruate “normally” can never become functional members of society. In some cases, the social stigmatization of menstruation gives rise to the monstrous potential of women in horror. In Stephen King’s Carrie, Carrietta White begins her period in the school shower and is ruthlessly bullied because of it.

The stones fell principally on the home of Mrs. Margaret White, damaging the roof extensively and ruining two gutters and a downspout valued at approximately $25. Mrs. White, a widow, lives with her three-year-old daughter, Carietta. Mrs. White could not he reached for comment. Nobody was really surprised when it happened, not really, not at the subconscious level where savage things grow. On the surface, all the girls in the shower room were shocked, thrilled, ashamed, or simply glad that the White bitch had taken it in the mouth again. Some of ~hem might also have claimed surprise, but of course their claim was untrue. Carrie had been going to school with some of them since the first grade, and this had been building since that time, building slowly and immutably, in accordance with all the laws that govern human nature, building with all the steadiness of a chain reaction approaching critical mass.
