William E. Leuchtenburg President American Historical Association 1991 William E. Leuchtenburg The infectious enthusiasm, gentle humanism, and judicious scholarship of William E. Leuchtenburg have inspired students of American history for more than forty years. As a scholar, the 1991 president of the American Historical Association is known to historians as one of the leading authorities in the world on the United States in the twentieth century. As a teacher, Leuchtenburg has attracted legions of students at New York University, Smith College, and Harvard University, where he taught in his early years; at Columbia University where he was the De Witt Clinton Professor of History and taught for thirty years; and, since 1982, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he is the William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of History Born in New York City to working-class German and Irish parents who grew up in poverty in the Hell’s Kitchen district of Manhattan, Leuchtenburg spent his adolescent years in a small apartment on Gleane Street in Queens. The saying in his family for a good while has been “it’s a long way from Gleane Street,” as Leuchtenburg has been honored with not one but two endowed chairs and with distinguished senior fellowships, among them from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the National Humanities Center, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He was appointed to the Harmsworth Chair at Oxford University; has been invited to deliver prestigious lectures in this country and abroad, including at such venues as the U.S. -

James M. McPherson George Henry Davis ‘86 Professor of American History Princeton University President 2003 Photo by: David Kelly Crow James McPherson: Historian in the Academy and in the World I first met Jim McPherson on a hot July day in 1986 on the Antietam battle field in Maryland. We were both participating in a British-produced television documentary on the Civil War, The Divided Union, which was designed, in part, to take the views of scholars to a wider audience. Meeting him in such a place and for such a purpose was particularly appropriate, perhaps, in view of Jim’s career and scholarly work. Of course, long before 1986 and Antietam, I already knew of Jim as a notable historian. Born in 1936 in Valley City, North Dakota, Jim received his BA degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1958. He went on to Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with C. Vann Woodward and received the PhD in 1963. Appointed an instructor at Princeton University in 1962, he has remained on the faculty there ever since, rising through the ranks to become full professor in 1972. He is currently George Henry Davis ‘86 Professor of American History at the university. Jim began his career as a student of abolition and race. His first book, The Struggle for Equality: Abolitionists and the Negro in the Civil War and Reconstruction (Princeton University Press, 1964), made a signal contribution to the understanding of abolitionists’ attitudes toward race and their influence on both the cause of emancipation and the resulting thirteenth, fourteenth, and fif teenth amendments to the Constitution. -

The Uses of the European Past in American Historiography

GUGGISBERG University of Basel I American historiography has always been preoccupied with American history. This is still the case in our present time. It is a natural phenomenon which applies in the same sense to other nations. Like other nations, too, America has always had historians who devoted themselves partly or exclusively to the study of the history of foreign lands. Within their guild they always were and still are a minority. Their position vis-a-vis the reading public and also vis-d-vis the subjects of their interest is more problematic than that of the historians who concentrate on the national past. For the American historian of foreign lands the question of a specific historical sense is not only inescapable but also more difficult to answer than for his colleague who writes on American history. As Leonard Krieger has pointed out a few years ago, this historical sense may be defined as the capacity to understand the temporally distant in its own terms together with the consciousness of its relations with the familiar. When the American historian of extra-American (i.e. in our case European) history finds the temporal distance extended by the geographical and cultural distance, he is quite naturally tempted to start out by asking of his subject: 'What is it to me or I to it that I should aspire to study and understand it?' This basic question can lead to interesting historiographical results, but it can also lead into the sterility of mere antiquarianism.1 It is quite evident that these same perils also threaten the European historian who studies a problem in a European field outside the history of his own country. -

Eric Foner President American Historical Association 2000 Eric Foner Eric foner, as one of his many admirers writes, is “one of nature’s com municators, a man whose vigorous prose style is matched by an engaging and voluble presence.” This apt description best captures the qualities that nuke him a premier raconteur of the American experience: his intellectual vigor, passion for history, tremendous literary and oratorical talents, and infectious energy. His versatility as a scholar and his driving commitment to create a truly inclusive and complex version of American history have given him an enviable and unique stature in academia and public life. A historian whose many publications reflect different ways of writing history and who has received nearly every distinction that his profession has to offer, he is, to paraphrase a hoary old saying, the master of all historical arts and jack of none. Born in 1943 to a family whose reputation for scholarship and activism is legendary, Eric foner imbibed the lessons of intellectual duty and social purpose at an early age. His father and uncle, Jack and Philip foner, were pioneers in labor and African American history and his other uncles and brother participated in the labor and civil rights movements. His mother, a high school art teacher, confronted Eric’s primary school principal about an illustration in his third-grade history text that showed happy slaves. Brought up in a family where intellectual and political issues were the stuff of everyday conversations, he absorbed his parents’ devotion to racial jus tice and to a broader, inclusive view of American history. -

While waiting, he dashed off a blithe note to his oldest friend, Charles Gaskell, in England—“I sail on the 20th and shall be in Paris thereafter.”1 Three days later, on 15 April, the Titanic sank. That same week, the Republican Party similarly “sank”—scuttled over Theodore Roosevelt’s challenge to William Taft’s candidacy for the presidency. A divided Republican Party, which had occu- pied the White House for over a decade, watched Woodrow Wilson sail to a Democratic victory. Adams described himself as a doubly shipwrecked mariner. “In half an hour, just in a summer sea, were wrecked the Titanic; President Taft; the Re- publican Party, Boyce Penrose, and I. We all foundered and disappeared. Old and sinful as I am, I turn green and sick when I think of it. I do not know whether Taft or the Titanic is likely to be the furthest reaching disaster.
