Bd. 2010 Andreas Mayer Pflanzen aus Glas (Plants made of glass) Zusammenfassung Die berühmte Harvard Universität besitzt ein angesehenes naturwissenschaftliches Museum das „Harvard Museum of Natural History“, welches jährlich rund 180.000 Besucher aus aller Welt anlockt. Die Hauptattraktion stellt eine einzigartige Sammlung von Pflanzenmodellen aus Glas dar. Prof. George Lincoln Goodale, der erste Direktor des Botanischen Museums von Harvard, wollte in den frühen 80er Jahren des 19. Jahr hunderts permanente Pflanzenmodelle aus Glas. Sie sollten zum einen die Schönheit des Pflanzenreichs in möglichst realistischer Form abbilden und zum anderen das ganze Jahr über zu Unterrichtszwecken genutzt werden. Ihm gelang es die beiden äußerst talentierten deutschen Glaskünstler, die sich bereits durch die Herstellung sehr realistischer Glasmodelle von marinen Invertebraten (wie etwa Quallen und See anemonen) einen Namen gemacht hatten, Leopold und seinen Sohn Rudolf Blaschka zur Herstellung von Pflanzen aus Glas zu überzeugen. Die Modelle wurden in den Jah ren 1886 bis 1936 exklusiv für die Harvard Universität mit damals üblichen Techniken gefertigt. Sie versetzten von da an den Betrachter durch ihre unbeschreibliche Schön heit und Detailtreue in großes Erstaunen. Die Finanzierung dieses Mammutprojekts übernahm Elizabeth C. The first modern painting to enter the museum’s collection—in 1941—it depicts the artist at the height of his fame in the late 1920s.1 When it debuted in Berlin at the Secession exhibition in 1928 it was immediately recognized as a major work, one marking a new stylistic development in the artist’s use of large planes of colour, especially black. While the Beckmann portrait may have been the first modern painting in the museum, the first painting to enter the collection—in 1909 and also a portrait—was another one entirely: it was a recent likeness of German Emperor Wilhelm II by the academic painter Arthur Kampf Figure 2 . Utilizing archives of nineteenth-century student writing as well as disciplinary and institutional histories, this study recovers student writing as material social practice, foregrounding, rather than effacing, cultural contradictions at three institutional sites. Drawing on scholarship in literary, cultural, and New Literacy Studies, this project returns to the literacy crisis at nineteenth-century Harvard and asks the critical question: what were Harvard examiners reading when they were reading illiteracy? Harvard scholars A. S. Hill, Barrett Wendell, and LeBaron Russell Briggs evaluated student writing according to its literary value, identifying two key elements of style—commonplaceness and sentimentality—as indicators of subliteracy that signified dependence. -

Coomes, Advisor As women entered higher education, positions were created to address their specific needs. In the 1890s, the position of dean of women proliferated, and in 1903 groups began to meet regularly in professional associations they called conferences of deans of women. This study examines how and why early deans of women formed these professional groups, how those groups can be characterized, and who comprised the conferences. It also explores the degree of continuity between the conferences and a later organization, the National Association of Deans of Women (NADW). Using evidence from archival sources, the known meetings are listed and described chronologically. Seven different conferences are identified: those intended for deans of women (a) Of the Middle West, (b) In State Universities, (c) With the Religious Education Association, (d) In Private Institutions, (e) With the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, (f) With the Southern Association of College Women, and (g) With the National Education Association (also known as the NADW). Each of the conferences is analyzed using seven organizational variables: membership, organizational structure, public relations, fiscal policies, services and publications, ethical standards, and affiliations. Individual profiles of each of 130 attendees are provided, and as a group they can be described as professional women who were both administrators and scholars, highly-educated in a variety of disciplines, predominantly unmarried, and active in social and political causes of the era. -
