Nearly 100 scholars from various church back- grounds and from several countries (United States, Canada, England, and Australia) participated in the creation of the NLT. Many of these same scholars are contributors to this commentary series. All the commentators, whether participants in the NLT or not, believe that the Bible is God’s inspired word and have a desire to make God’s word clear and accessible to his people. This Bible commentary is the natural extension of our vision for the New Living Translation, which we believe is both exegetically accurate and idiomati- cally powerful. The NLT attempts to communicate God’s inspired word in a lucid English translation of the original languages so that English readers can understand and appreciate the thought of the original writers. In the same way, the Cornerstone Biblical Commentary aims at helping teachers, pastors, students, and laypeople understand every thought contained in the Bible. As such, the commentary focuses first on the words of Scripture, then on the theological truths of Scripture—inasmuch as the words express the truths. The commentary itself has been structured in such a way as to help readers get at the meaning of Scripture, passage by passage, through the entire Bible. Each Bible book is prefaced by a substantial book introduction that gives general historical background important for understanding. Then the reader is taken through the Bible text, passage by passage, starting with the New Living Transla- tion text printed in full. This is followed by a section called “Notes,” wherein the commentator helps the reader understand the Hebrew or Greek behind the English of the NLT, interacts with other scholars on important interpretive issues, and points the reader to significant textual and contextual matters. The “Notes” are followed by the “Commentary,” wherein each scholar presents a lucid interpretation of the passage, giving special attention to context and major theological themes. The commentators represent a wide spectrum of theological positions within the evangelical community. We believe this is good because it reflects the rich variety in Christ’s church. All the commentators uphold the authority of God’s word and believe it is essential to heed the old adage: “Wholly apply yourself to the Scriptures and apply them wholly to you.” May this commentary help you know the truths of Scripture, and may this knowledge help you “grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord” (2 Pet 1:2, NLT). Abstract In the first chapter of this work, I provide an introduction to the current discussion of scribal habits. In Chapter Two, I discuss Abschriften—or manuscripts with extant known exemplars—, their history in textual criticism, and how they can be used to elucidate the discussion of scribal habits. I also present a methodology for determining if a manuscript is an Abschrift. In Chapter Three, I analyze P127, which is not an Abschrift, in order that we may become familiar with determining scribal habits by singular readings. Chapters Four through Six present the scribal habits of selected proposed manuscript pairs: 0319 and 0320 as direct copies of 06 (with their Latin counterparts VL76 and VL83 as direct copies of VL75), 205 as a direct copy of 2886, and 821 as a direct copy of 0141.

References to some of these publications were included in the German translation of the volume issued in 1966 under the title Der Text des Neuen Test- aments; Einftihrung in die neutestamentliche Textkritik (Kohlhammer Verlag, Stuttgart) . The second printing of the English edition provides opportunity to introduce a variety of small alterations throughout the volume as well as to include references to more than one hundred and fifty books and articles dealing with Greek manuscripts, early versions, and textual studies of recently discovered witnesses to the text of the New Testament. In order not to disturb the pagination, most of the new material has been placed at the close of the book (pp. 261-73), to which the reader's attention is directed by appropriate cross references.     Appendix I Introduction to Use of the Greek New Testament Manuscripts For faithful preservation of ancient writings through the centuries, the Greek New Testament has been second only to the Hebrew Old Testament. Although Benjamin Wilson says the King James Bible (KJV, or AV for Authorized Version) “has been convicted of containing over 20,000 errors” (due both to altered Greek text and deficient translation), nowhere near a thousand significantly affect the meaning,1 and fewer than a hundred would influence the reader’s understanding of the Bible message. Nevertheless, it is to correct these significant corruptions of the word of God that the ancient manuscripts have been sought out and tirelessly researched. The search for ancient and better manuscripts began in the Reformation and has to date yielded over forty manuscripts from before the time of Constantine and the Imperial text type, and over one hundred from 5th century and earlier, out of a total pool of 3,400 or more. The text type found in a majority of the earliest manuscripts is preserved in the Sinaitic and Vatican 1209 manuscripts, and is tenaciously held by even a few manuscripts as late as the 13th and 14th centuries. More than fifty important manuscripts and more than eight early versions (translations into ancient languages) are described here. Basic principles for using evidence from the manuscripts are summarized; the reader is then introduced to GNT4, Nestle27, Hoskier and others, and to categories of manuscript reliability. In Part I, Manuscripts and Text Evaluation, an introduction to using the Greek New Testament evidence is followed by examples from five texts.

It consisted of collation material relating to all accessible Greek manuscripts of the Catholic Epistles. This extensive and unparalleled collection is now, al- most thirty years later, nearly completed by the present volume on the Apocalypse of John (Rev), undertaken under the auspices of the Wup- pertal research project Erstellung einer kritischen Edition der Johannespoka- lypse (ECM-Apk). In comparison with the other volumes of the series, several special features should be noted. The 123 test passages presented in this volume do not belong to the original set that Aland chose for the evaluation of New Testament man- uscripts.

Sources The starting point for the Catalogue was Metzger‘s expanded list (based on Nestle‘s original) of explicit references to variants among the fathers.1 Since this list includes only names and Scripture references, it was necessary to find each of these texts within the works of each father.2 Search engines, such as the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and Patrologia Latina, have been invaluable in finding these texts and further augmenting this list through a search of key phrases. Since Nestle‘s and Metzger‘s lists were compiled primarily through a manual search of Tischendorf‘s apparatus,3 this also provided an important resource; in at least one instance where no additional source has been located for the patristic quotation in question, Tischendorf himself has been used as the cited source. In imitation of this strategy, the apparatuses of NA27 and UBS4 have also been manually scoured for references not included in Metzger‘s list. A combination 1 Bruce M.
