The Solid Rock Greek New Testament: Theory and Practice Joey McCollum Abstract The Solid Rock Greek New Testament: Scholar’s Edition offers a recon- structed text of the New Testament based on Byzantine priority theory and expands upon the work of the SBL Greek New Testament by compar- ing the readings of over 10 major critical editions at nearly 8000 units of textual variation. In this survey, we will discuss the goals, principles, and processes underlying the development of this edition, focusing especially on the design and use of the apparatus. As we will show, the resources available in this work make it a valuable addition to the library of anyone involved in the teaching, translation, or study of the Greek New Testament. 1 Introduction 1.1 New Testament Textual Criticism For nearly as long as the Church has recognized the scriptures of the New Testament (ΝΤ) as authoritative, it has also understood that not all copies of these scriptures agree with one another.¹ If we assume that each book of the NT originated in a single inspired autograph, then any two manuscripts cannot both be right where they disagree.² More to the point, where any difference 1. For this reason, their notes serve as crucial evidence for variant readings, sometimes in cases when the reading in the patristic citation has not survived in any NT manuscript. Psalms Psalm
Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -

The course focuses on key historical events and controversies that shaped Presbyterian denominations, major leaders who influenced Presbyterian theology and its prominent institutions, movements that reflected Presbyterian leadership of American religions, and the reciprocal relation between Presbyterianism and American culture. A special feature of this course will be a focus on African-American contributions to American Presbyterianism throughout its history. Goals: 1. The student will be introduced to the main outlines of Presbyterian history in America, noting major figures, events, controversies, and outcomes. 2. Through the lectures, the student will be exposed to the cultural and political contexts of Presbyterian thought and develop a greater critical appreciation for the Presbyterian tradition. 3. Through the reading and discussions, the student will be oriented to key figures, beliefs, practices, and stories in the life of the Presbyterian church and will consider how they relate to contemporary Christian life and ministry. 4. Through the critical book review essay, the student will engage in critical dialogue with one particularly significant theologian or theological event in Presbyterian history. 5. Through the final paper, the student will have the opportunity to explore a particular Presbyterian theologian or theological issue and so grow in his/her critical appreciation for Presbyterian history and identity. -

3 THE WESTCOTT-HORT CRITICAL THEORY Although Brooke Foss Westcott identified himself fully with the project and the results, it is generally understood that it was mainly Fenton John Anthony Hort 1 who developed the theory and composed the Introduction in their two-volume work. 2 In the following discussion I consider the W-H theory to be Hort's creation. At the age of 23, in late 1851, Hort wrote to a friend: “I had no idea till the last few weeks of the importance of texts, having read so little Greek Testament, and dragged on with the villainous Textus Receptus . Think of that vile Textus Receptus leaning entirely on late MSS.; it is a blessing there are such early ones.” 3 Scarcely more than a year later, "the plan of a joint [with B.F. Westcott] revision of the text of the Greek Testament was first definitely agreed upon".4 And within that year (1853) Hort wrote to a friend that he hoped to have the new text out "in little more than a year".5 That it actually took twenty-eight years does not obscure the circumstance that though uninformed, by his own admission, Hort conceived a personal animosity for the Textus Receptus ,6 and only because it was based entirely, so he thought, on late manuscripts. It appears that Hort did not arrive at his theory through unprejudiced intercourse with the facts. Rather, he deliberately set out to construct a theory that would vindicate his preconceived animosity for the Received Text. Colwell has made the same observation: "Hort organized his entire argument to depose the Textus Receptus".7 And again, “Westcott and Hort wrote with two things constantly in mind; the Textus Receptus and the Codex Vaticanus. -

True Courage | A Memorial Sermon For General Thomas J. “Stone-wall” Jackson by Robert L. Dabney INTRODUCTION Stonewall Jackson General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, born in the mountains of what is now West Virginia on Jan. 21, 1824, ranks among the most valiant soldiers and skillful tacticians in all military history. After graduating from West Point, Jackson served with distinction in the Mexi- can War and then returned to Virginia to teach natural philosophy and artillery tactics at Virginia Military Institute for 10 years. While in Lexington Jackson lived an exemplary life, serving as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church and founding and teaching in a Sunday School for slaves. With the war Jackson entered the service of the Confederacy. He was given his famous nick-name on July 21, 1861, at the first battle of Manassas. Confederate troops had been put to flight by a powerful Union advance. General Bernard Bee of South Carolina, seeking desperately to stem the tide, saw Jackson and his troops standing firm. Bee cried, “There stands Jackson like a stone wall. Rally behind the Virginians!” With that stand the battle turned from a Confederate defeat to a Federal rout, and from that day forward Jackson’s was known as the Stone-wall Bri- gade. Of this engagement Jackson wrote to his wife on July 22nd, “Yesterday we fought a great battle, and gained a great victory, for which all the glory is due to God alone.”1 In 1863, while defeating Federal forces at Chancellorsville, Jackson was accidentally shot by his own men and died eight days later.
