Home Schooling: Are Partnerships Possible?
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: HOME SCHOOLING: ARE PARTNERSHIPS POSSIBLE? Kristine L. Angelis, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor Robert Croninger Department of Education Home schooling has been described as both the oldest and newest form of education, and as the number of home school students continues to grow, a partnership is beginning to evolve with their local school systems. Some states are offering a variety of educational resources to these students which may include participation in extracurricular activities, classroom instruction, or virtual learning opportunities. This exploratory case study is designed to better understand a parent’s choice to home school within the social and institutional framework available to them in Maryland. Maryland offers home schooling families a choice of monitoring options, through their local public school system or a bona fide church exempt organization. The state does not offer home schooling families any additional educational resources except the opportunity to participate in standardized testing. Home schooling parents monitored through a local public school system located in the Baltimore-Washington-Northern Virginia Combined Statistical Area were asked to complete a questionnaire designed to ascertain family characteristics and reasons to home school. Respondents were categorized according to their reason to home school – religious/moral, academic, or other. Eight families were randomly chosen from the three categories to participate in a personal interview to discuss their choice to home school, experiences and challenges of home schooling, and if they would be interested in having services made available to them through their local public school system. Analysis of questionnaire findings and interviews indicated some similarities between the target population and results of the 2003 National Center for Education Statistics survey with the majority in both surveys indicating religion as a main reason to home school. -

PAUL GOODMAN (1911-1972) Edgar Z. Friedenberg1 Paul Goodman died of a heart attack on 2 August 1972, a month short of his 61st birthday. This was not wholly unwise. He would have loathed what his country made of the 1970s and 1980s, even more than he would have enjoyed denouncing its crassness and hypocrisy. The attrition of his influence and reputation during the ensuing years would have been difficult for a figure who had longed for the recognition that had eluded him for many years, despite an extensive and varied list of publications, until Growing up absurd was published in 1960, which finally yielded him a decade of deserved renown. It is unlikely that anything he might have published during the Reagan-Bush era could have saved him from obscurity, and from the distressing conviction that this obscurity would be permanent. Those years would not have been kind to Goodman, although he was not too kind himself. He might have been and often was forgiven for this; as well as for arrogance, rudeness and a persistent, assertive homosexuality—a matter which he discusses with some pride in his 1966 memoir, Five years, which occasionally got him fired from teaching jobs. However, there was one aspect of his writing that the past two decades could not have tolerated. -

History ABSTRACT This booklet provides an analysis of the American educational system from a socialist perspective. Based on the idea that our past and present educational system has been largely determined by the needs and ideology of the capitalist economic system, the author proposes an alternative society and educational system that places human needs above private profit. The booklet is divided into three sections which analyze the paste present, and alternative future educational systems. The first section examines how the capitalist ideology influenced the development of our educational system through such concepts as tracking, political indoctrination in history courses, and the direct and indirect capitalistic control of school administration. Section two explains the school socialization process under capitalism and how the capitalist system benefits from this process. It focuses on how punctuality and attendance, obedience to authority, competition and individualism, sexism and racism, and acceptance of boredom contribute to the capitalist ideology. Section three outlines the Chinese and Cuban educational systems as examples of socialist countries that have made great strides in the development of their educational systems. -

All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled "More than Planners, Less than Utopians:" 1960s Futurism and Post-Industrial Theory by JASPER VERSCHOOR has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by Kevin Mattson Connor Study Professor of Contemporary History Robert Frank Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT VERSCHOOR, JASPER, Ph.D., August 2017, History "More than Planners, Less than Utopians:" 1960s Futurism and Post-Industrial Theory Director of Dissertation: Kevin Mattson This dissertation studies the ideas of a group of thinkers described by Time Magazine in 1966 as “Futurists.” The American sociologist Daniel Bell, the French political philosopher Bertrand de Jouvenel, and the physicist Herman Kahn argued that the future could not be predicted but that forecasting certain structural changes in society could help avoid social problems and lead to better planning. In order to engage in such forecasting Jouvenel founded Futuribles, an international group that facilitated discussion about the future of advanced industrial societies. Bell chaired a Commission on the year 2000 that aimed to anticipate social problems for policy makers. The dissertation also focuses on work done by Kahn and others at the RAND Corporation and the Hudson Institute. The origin of 1960s futurism is traced to debates held under the auspices of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, especially ideas about the “end of ideology.” The supposed exhaustion of left and right-wing political ideologies produced a desire for new theories of social change. -
