Nous avions un programme ambitieux qui visait à « développer des recherches ori ginales sur la dimension structurelle du capitalisme contemporain, élaborer des perspectives anti et postcapitalistes concrètes et pratiques et participer à l’élaboration de nouvelles alternatives pour alimenter le mouvement social et la gauche politique1 ». En outre, nous faisions le constat de la pauvreté des revues de gauche au Québec . Ce qui allait de soi durant les décennies précédentes (Parti pris, Socia- lisme québécois, les Cahiers du socialisme, Interventions économiques, Critiques socialistes, etc.) avait, à toutes fins utiles, disparu. Autre ment dit, il n’y avait plus de revues intellectuelles de gauche au Québec, bien qu’existent un magazine, À babord !, et un site internet, Presse-toi à gauche, qui jouent un rôle important et complémentaire. L’une de nos hypothèses explicatives était que le virage scien- tiste pris par les périodiques universitaires en sciences sociales, lié aux trans- formations mêmes des conditions de la production du « savoir », s’est fait au détriment de leur mission d’animation intellectuelle autour des dynamiques de transformation sociale. Or, les Nouveaux Cahiers du socialisme (NCS) répondent précisément à ce besoin : combler partiellement le vacuum engendré par la dis- parition d’une certaine tradition de la pensée progressiste au Québec, celle des revues « théo riques » de gauche. Les Nouveaux Cahiers du socialisme Le CAP a donc lancé en janvier 2009 la première livraison des NCS, sur le thème des classes sociales. Quatre numéros plus tard, un lectorat qui oscille autour de 1 000 personnes par numéro et une réputation de plus en plus solide parmi les intellectuelLEs et les militantEs des mouvements sociaux, les NCS semblent bien engagés. Much of the recent work on 21st century terrorism carried out in the global north has placed the focus on terrorism being perpetuated by Middle East Muslims. In addition, recent migration trends show that the global north is becoming much more diverse as the highly populated global south migrates upward. Population growth in the global north is primarily due to increases in the minority presence, and these post-1960 changes have increased the diversity of historically more homogeneous nations like the United Kingdom and Canada. This research examines the influence of terrorism on discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, with a focus on the United Kingdom in the aftermath of the July 7, 2005 terrorist attacks in London.

Islam, for this perspec- tive, poses challenges for the ideological integration of Muslim immigrants in Western societies. This paper examines Canadian Muslims’ opinions about same-sex marriage. The analysis suggests that Canadian Muslims, as a group, do have distinctively negative opinions about same-sex marriage, but that there is substantial and systematic variation in opinions about this issue within the Muslim-Canadian community. Indeed, it is religiosity in general, rather than Islam in particular, that generates negative opinions about gay marriage. Exposure to the Canadian context, and especially postsecondary education, largely undoes the distinctiveness of Canadian Muslims’ opinions about this issue. Introduction In January 2007, the town of Hérouxville, Québec, Canada drafted a series of resolutions aimed at prospective immigrants. The most controversial resolution prohibited the stoning of women in public. “Nous considérons que les hommes et les femmes sont égaux et ont la même valeur,” the docu- ment proclaims, reaffirming the community’s basic commitment to the fundamental rights of women, including their right to walk unaccompanied in public, attend school, and operate a vehicle (Municipalité de Hérouxville, 2010).
